New Washing Machines do not use 1600 spin

Ermintrude40 · 30/07/2024 10:36

After being a workhorse for about 15 years my washing machine is finally dying. I have mostly used just one programme with 40C and 1600 spin which takes about an hour. So on a good sunny, windy day I can do several loads. I often wear shirts without an iron.
This now seems to be almost impossible. Most machines will now only use 1600 spin on a few very long cycles. Beko says it takes 167 minutes, Hotpoint slightly less. So my mantra of 40c, 1600 spin and one hour has been difficult to fulfill. I am hoping Hoover can manage it.

But I came to the conclusion that Mums would be the ones most concerned about this. They would want their washing well spun. Less moisture indoors in the winter. They would not want their washing to take hours.

It seems to be some kind of government ECO directive possibly originating in the EU. I want fight against it. It is ridiculous. I have solar panels the electric usage is not important to me. What about the cost of additional drying? What about mould in your house during the winter?

My hoover can do a 1hr 1600 spin

TheShellBeach · 30/07/2024 10:39

All washing machines have a spin programme, so you can do a 15 or 30 min. wash cycle, then set your machine to do a 1600 spin afterwards.

TheBizzies · 30/07/2024 10:39

On my Bosch you can use the hour long ish cycle which spins at 12 or 1400 but then I do an extra spin of 1600

AuntieJoyce · 30/07/2024 10:39

My 1600 spin washer has a rinse and spin cycle that is seven minutes so I always do a 45 minute normal wash spin cycle and then click on the seven minute spin at the end. Is this an option on new ones? I must admit when I was looking recently there were very few 1600 spin washer models available, it’s obviously out of vogue

Edingril · 30/07/2024 10:39

We use 400 cycle it makes our clothes last longer and not sure what being a mum has to do with washing and spin cycles

the electric usage is still important to other people.
And despite Brexit if you think that manufacturers are going to make faster, energy and water inefficient, white goods for the UK, you would be wrong.

that is why you have plastic bottles with caps that don't come off.

Most modern machines have a 30 minute cycle, why not use that?

TheBizzies · 30/07/2024 10:40

Well I think it's called drain and spin actually

Sosorryliver · 30/07/2024 10:43

I find washing machines/ dishwashers really slow these days. Nearly 4 hours for a white cotton cycle! Normally I do colour cottons at 1h50. Bedlinens / towels on a longer cycle get put on at bedtime and hung up in the morning. Better to go for a larger load capacity. Mines does 10kg so I can do bigger loads and get through it faster.

TheBizzies · 30/07/2024 10:44

The 30 mins doesn't clean as well and after a while I find it makes the machine and clothes smell

it's ok if you just want to freshen up your clothes though I think

Beth216 · 30/07/2024 10:51

My washing machine's only quick wash is at 30 degrees which is useless. All the other cycles takes hours and hours. I think washing machines are getting more and more rubbish in the name of being 'eco friendly', but how can it be more eco friendly to be using electricity for hours and hours instead of being able to do a quick 40 degree wash?

well since they're all doing it and thousands and thousands of hours go into R&D i'd guess they know what they're doing?

Thank you for all the messages. This is a dictate from Government. It is ridiculous. It seems many people simply put on a spin cycle after the wash has finished. So what is being saved. It simply means you have to remember to go back and reprogramme the machine. We need to demand that washing machines will do what we want them to do.

Yeah it's one great conspiracy

Brefugee · 30/07/2024 10:59

good luck with that. What is this big conspiracy? Why would Big Government be interfering in how you wash your smalls? New machines are slower because they tend to use cooler water and more gentle cycles and that takes longer. They use less water than previously, and despite the long run length they also use less electricity, on the whole. If you wash everything at 60° or more, YMMV

It's nice to know the government isn't completely useless, their top secret washing machine conspiracy arm is clearly top notch.

Next time just look at what the machine can do before you buy one. We have a new samsung, it has a 30 minute wash, you can change the temperature from 0 to 60, you can change the spin from 400 to 1600 and press go. It will even talk to the 5g COVID vaccine in your blood your phone to tell you when the program is finished.

Mine doesn’t do a short wash!!

Edingril · 30/07/2024 11:05

Actually don't let on anyone it's a secret but the government plants tracking devices in knickers so they know what we are up too or down too as the case may be

Ermintrude40 · 30/07/2024 11:08

Yes thank you. I looked at the Samsung. It looks good but it is about twice the price of other machines.
Hoover promise me that I can it too. I just think that someone has got their wires twisted about how eco the new machines really are. More water in the clothes means mould in your house during the winter.

It does not seem right that the more expensive machine seem to bypass the rules.

I hate newer washing machines, all the programmes I use take 2 - 4 hours, apart from the occasional hand-wash setting that takes 45 mins. I've tried the shorter ones and they just don't clean the clothes, even at 40°, they don't smell clean and I don't think there's enough water to rinse them properly.

The eco 50° setting on my dishwasher doesn't clean either, so I always use the 65° setting.

Then the tumble dryer which I use mainly for towels, my old one used to leave them bone dry but I need to air them now after the sensors decide there's no more moisture and it stops automatically.

My work around when I know the weather will be good is to put items that take longer to dry in at night and delay the start time so it's just finished as I get up, then put the next one on straight away. I remember being able to have 3 loads washed and out to dry in a couple of hours.

Mine does, but it doesn't wash the clothes properly and has a very low recommended load capacity weight. Put that on a 1600 spin and the machine will dance across the floor!

HousedInMySoul · 30/07/2024 11:12

Have you checked whether the machine has the option to change spin speeds and to make the wash program faster? My bosch has these options but it is about 6 years old so maybe they don't do that anymore?

Normallynumb · 30/07/2024 11:21

My new beko does a 1400 spin on a 58 minute cycle
I'm really impressed with the spec for the price

Biffsboys · 30/07/2024 11:22

My relatively new Beko has the option to change the temperature and spin speeds on most washes .

Normallynumb · 30/07/2024 11:23

As PP I can " customise" temperature and spin speeds on every setting

BlueEyedLeucy · 30/07/2024 11:32

My new-ish Bosch spins the clothes out drier at 1200 rpm than our old machine did at higher spin speeds. There’s usually a rating for how well a machine spins out water. It isn’t all down to pure speed so I wouldn’t worry too much about direct cycle like for like. A 1 hr cycle, 40c and 1200 rpm is my go to. Does a better job at washing and spinning than the old machine did.
