New Washing Machines do not use 1600 spin

Ermintrude40 · 30/07/2024 10:36

After being a workhorse for about 15 years my washing machine is finally dying. I have mostly used just one programme with 40C and 1600 spin which takes about an hour. So on a good sunny, windy day I can do several loads. I often wear shirts without an iron.
This now seems to be almost impossible. Most machines will now only use 1600 spin on a few very long cycles. Beko says it takes 167 minutes, Hotpoint slightly less. So my mantra of 40c, 1600 spin and one hour has been difficult to fulfill. I am hoping Hoover can manage it.

But I came to the conclusion that Mums would be the ones most concerned about this. They would want their washing well spun. Less moisture indoors in the winter. They would not want their washing to take hours.

It seems to be some kind of government ECO directive possibly originating in the EU. I want fight against it. It is ridiculous. I have solar panels the electric usage is not important to me. What about the cost of additional drying? What about mould in your house during the winter?

My Miele W1 Powerwash has a 40 degree, 1 hour, 1600 spin cycle. It's called Quick Power Wash. Mmm iele are ££ though & I've had it a few years.

TheShellBeach · 30/07/2024 11:46

I've got a Bosch which does a 45 min, 1400 spin programme.

We use 400 cycle it makes our clothes last longer and not sure what being a mum has to do with washing and spin cycles

Mums are constantly washing for themselves, their children and that great Apr who suddenly seems unable to perform even the most rudimentary of domestic tasks.

Washing and spinning is a high priority.

lifeisafunnyoldgame · 30/07/2024 11:59

My hoover can do a 14 min quick wash with 40 degrees and 1600 spin.

ouch321 · 30/07/2024 12:01

Do people really think that shorter wash programmes don't clean properly?

Mine offers 14 mins, 30 mins, 44 mins and I use the latter.

So you think clothes still LOOK dirty after or SMELL dirty or...?

Chersfrozenface · 30/07/2024 12:05

Currys website has a filter so you can just see washing machines with 1600 spin speed. Only 44 compared with 1400 but they do exist.

And having found the details of one/some, you can of course buy it/them elsewhere.

Comefromaway · 30/07/2024 12:05

I prefer a lower spin as it means my clothes last longer. I use 1400 for towels, 1200 for cotton/bedding, 1000 for coloureds and 800 for delicates

Have you a Hoover machine? Mine had those programmes but I find the clothes don't smell clean and even don't have that lovely fresh smell when dried outside.

Ermintrude40 · 30/07/2024 12:47

I have now ordered a Hoover. I do hope it will do a reasonable job.
I looked at the Beko and it takes 167 minutes for the only wash that uses 1600 spin speed. That is nearly three hours. Yikes!!

I think some still have some older stock. The most up to date machines now follow the ECO directives. From my point of view they are useless.

I just cannot understand how this directive has been mandated without anyone being asked to comment about it.
I have now contacted my MP. I am all for saving the planet. But I do not think that filling my house with mould is the right way to do it.

As I have a 1400 machine, I always put my washing through an extra spin cycle, wherever I'm going to dry it. Thus using more electricity.

Unless it's a blazing hot day like today, but how many if those do we get in a year?

A dehumidifier would be helpful for you in winter. I have a 1600 spin machine and the amount of water that the dehumidifier gets out of the washing is still substantial

Ermintrude40 · 30/07/2024 14:02

It to me to be a very retrograde step to have to put a machine onto a separate spin cycle after the washing finishes. From my point of view it needs to be able to do it all in one single sequence. It does not seem to save anything from an eco point of view if this extra spin cycle is left off the calculations. It is like saying if you drive from London to Glasgow, that it saves fuel if you finish your journey in Manchester. The journey onwards does not count because it is a separate trip.

My washer, indesit, only does the fastest spin on long cycles so when I'm doing the 1 hour wash I spin it twice.

so you are saying, and correct me if I'm wrong, that BOSCH, Miele, Samsung, Beko and all other modern washing machine manufacturers who spend millions on R&D are wrong and you are right?

Sure, dude.

Pleasebeafleabite · 30/07/2024 17:16

It’s only R&D to create ridiculous economy programmes to meet eu energy efficiency targets which are basically just the same as soaking the laundry overnight beforehand. We could all do that our bloody selves

Nsky62 · 30/07/2024 17:25

Have an AEG washing machine, can time save twice on most cycles, 1400 spin cycle, not cheap, a great machine with steam options too

But people have lengthy showers etc and yet the amount of water used in a machine is derisory...probably less than a washing up bowl or two! As a PP has said, it's not enough water to rinse clothes properly.
It's a bit like issuing paper straws for drinks that come in huge plastic cups with domed lids. Just paying lip service (if you pardon the pun) to environmental concerns .

PerfectYear321 · 31/07/2024 00:23

I use a shortish cycle (about an hour 20) then select a separate extra spin, which is 1600 and about 12 mins.

I don't think there's a great conspiracy!

Just reading your thread. I need to buy a new washer today, thinking 9kg 1600 hoover.

Please could you tell me if the daily 49 function is any good?

Thanks x

YellowComb · 17/09/2024 13:04

I hope my mid range Bosch lasts another ten years then. Although it only does 1400 max I can half all my programs and do a quick wash on 15min or 30 mins. Great for gym gear etc. It also moves the temperature up and down on each program, so very flexible. I'm loving my Bosch more now after reading about all those long programs.

YellowComb · 17/09/2024 13:09

I see Johnnies have 12 washing machines that do 1600 spin. Haven't looked through them but would imagine there would be a quick wash option for about an hour program. https://www.johnlewis.com/browse/electricals/washing-machines-tumble-dryers/washing-machines/freestanding/1600rpm/_/N-afhZ1z0roojZ1z0rnjj
