Quartz worktop.. how do you keep yours looking lovely?

Houseplanter · 22/07/2024 19:07

I've never had quartz before but have just spent a hideous amount of money on a worktop I want to love for a long time.

So please, what products do you use and how do I keep it shiny?

It's white btw, with some veining

I just use antibacterial spray to wipe it down that's it. Mine is also white with some grey speckles and a little bit of mirror. Don't do anything to make it shiney but it still is. Ours has been in for 6 years now.

It's more what u need to be careful with. Curry from the Indians are the worst, Chinese grease or curry sometimes red sauces. If it gets on it then get it wiped off quickly. We do have some feint marks that I cldnt get out from curries I don't actually know where they are u can't see them but at the time I cldnt get them out completely.

I have used pink stuff as a last resort but it starts to remove the shine so use sparingly!

Frosty1000 · 22/07/2024 19:37

Ours is white too - wipe any spills like tea/coffee immediately.

We give it a daily wipe over with either hot soapy water or method granite spray. We haven't had any stains so can't comment on deep cleaning.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 22/07/2024 19:47

I find Cif Kitchen the best for stuff that won't just wipe off. If a stubborn mark, spray and leave on. Really stubborn mark then Barkeeper's Friend used very sparingly.

joelmillerswatch · 22/07/2024 19:47

We’ve white and as previous posters say wipe up tea marks and food stains quickly. Don’t leave things like cans on the side if it might even be slightly damp. I’ve found ours has gone a bit dull with just being wiped down with soapy water. The fitters said something about the residue doing this but I’ve not looked into how to remove it yet.

Houseplanter · 22/07/2024 20:25

Oh no, I'm not wondering if we've made a mistake! Going to have to get DH to up his game wiping up tea rings.

Use a quartz cleaner as the antibacterial sprays and soapy water can all leave residue which is very very hard to get off!! Method do a good one but most supermarkets also do their own version! We use a bit of Cif for any stubborn stains (tea, wine, turmeric)

BruceAndNosh · 22/07/2024 20:34

Good old high alcohol hand sanitiser gets turmeric and red wine off our off white quartz

myslippersarepink · 22/07/2024 20:35

The best thing to clean it with is elbow grease. Spray and leave. The other great thing is plain baking powder out of the tub, sprinkle some on and then wet your fingers and then rub. Just don't leave a tea spoon, turmeric or food colouring on it for more than 5 seconds !!!

EasterlyDirections · 22/07/2024 20:37

Dh is always leaving coffee stains on ours but they just wipe off with a damp microfibre cloth. Our problem is limescale round the tap which is mounted on the worktop not the sink itself, I use limescale remover very sparingly there.

Hollyhocksandlarkspur · 22/07/2024 20:39

They’re gorgeous OP and ours still looks like new six years later so don’t worry. The only stain we’ve had to use more than soapy water with is red wine and curry so used a bit of cream cleaner or bar tender and a gentle scour in the drainage channel. It’s a great hard wearing choice.

theredspindletree · 22/07/2024 20:44

I use Barkeepers friend as I found cif didn't really get rid of any cup rings properly.

carmenja · 22/07/2024 20:48

Don't ever ever let oven cleaner or any other very strong chemicals get on it - DH has not forgiven me for making this mistake a few years ago and damaging ours!

FattipuffToThinnifer · 22/07/2024 20:51

Ours is plain white and I’ve found that every “stain” including tea, curry, red cabbage and wood varnish disappears/fades out after a bit - except rust. So never leave a tin in a pool of water, or anything else wet that’s going to drip rust

I use ordinary Method anti-bac cleaner, or Tesco’s granite spray, with microfibre cloths, or a pan scrub. Anything except bleach really. I love the quartz; it looks so good!

Houseplanter · 23/07/2024 08:13

Thank you for your comments.

It's being fitted in the next week and I loved it in the shop (although a bit of a leap of faith as the sample is so small).

I will banish bleach from the kitchen and take on board your advice re prompt wiping up.

Barkeepers friend for turmeric and the like.but we drink a lot of tea, red wine, cook curries and a lot of tomatoey sauces…and it still looks fine 4 years on.

I wish I’d kept the bit they cut out for the sink and put it on where we make tea…as that does get a bit stained. But so far a good wipe has sorted it….

Tadpole10 · 23/07/2024 08:50

We have beautiful white quartz but it's a bit too easy to stain. Wine, curry, etc all come off after a day or so of normal wiping over with method or smol spray. However rust from cans and baking trays is a really stubborn stain seems to take a few weeks to fade and go.

I am about to order barkeepers friend as I'm hearing from lots of you that's best for stains on quartz. Is there a non abrasive option? I have ruined our bath by scrubbing with an abrasive cleaner so am now cautious.

Houseplanter · 23/07/2024 09:25

Has anyone tried Hob brite (Hobrite?)? I use it to keep my induction hob clean. It's much much finer than cif but brings the hob up to a lovely shine. I wondered if that would be ok on quartz.

I use soapy water then remove with a squeegee and then dry before using method granite cleaner.

Twodozenroses · 23/07/2024 09:36

I just use wet kitchen roll which works well and cif straight away on tea rings which do stain otherwise

TemuSpecialBuy · 23/07/2024 09:38

Window clenaing spray. Fitter told us. I was skeptical but it works fantastically

Ineedwinenow · 23/07/2024 09:45

I have a pile of silicon heatproof mats in our kitchen so whenever we put anything down we just grab a mat so whether it’s cutlery, crockery, oven dishes or saucepans we do it so it doesn’t scratch or mark.

Spills get wiped up immediately and I use glass/window cleaner sprayed onto a microfibre cloth to shine it up after wiping with plain water, occasionally I might use antibacterial spray or soapy water but it’s very rare, our installer said just use plain water, I just use glass cleaner to take off the smears and they are in perfect condition 6 years later and I still absolutely love them!

EasterlyDirections · 23/07/2024 09:51

We never put hot pans or trays on ours in case they crack it (we had wood worktops previously so were used to that) but everything else goes on there, it is still as good as new after three years.

goingtotown · 23/07/2024 11:35

Window cleaner spray.

Tadpole10 · 25/07/2024 11:01

Just tried the barkeepers friend on some rust stains on the white quartz. It was terrifyingly effective! They just wiped off.

I am a bit worried it's abrasive.. will use very sparingly and also try not to stain it in the first place.

EasterlyDirections · 25/07/2024 11:23

You can get a spray version that is more gentle.
