Does anyone else swap plates or is it only me?

I swap round the plates (and other crockery) so the top ones don’t get used all the time. It seemed sensible but now I’m wondering if it’s completely bonkers. Please tell me it’s not just me that does this?

OP posts:

I do this, too.

nc14 · 25/06/2024 21:10

I don’t do it but it’s a good idea!

Singleandproud · 25/06/2024 21:11

How many do you have, growing up the full set would get used for each meal time.

It's only me and DD so we have 2 of everything and just use those as our main set although have the ruff raff left over from old sets.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 25/06/2024 21:16

Jealous of your ample storage, OP. I have four plates, a few bowls and Tupperware and maybe two knife and fork sets. They all get used all of the time. I don't have a dishwasher so got rid of the excess on purpose.

minipie · 25/06/2024 21:19

I think this is bonkers tbh

Makes sense for eg bedlinen that wears out, but crockery and cutlery doesn’t wear out?? Unless yours marks maybe?

UtterlyOtterly · 25/06/2024 21:20

You have the wrong approach. You swap them round so none of them get sad at always being left in the cupboard.

AppleKatie · 25/06/2024 21:21

I see your logic but even without doing this I have plates that are 20+ years old and I’m bored rigid of them and really wish they would wear out 😂so I won’t bother starting now.

HJ40 · 25/06/2024 21:24

My mum did it so I do it, but her plates had a pattern and mine are plain, so for me, it's probably bonkers.

I wonder if the glaze would wear differently? Perhaps there's a reason.

(But I also don't want to have any sad plates, so I might keep going).

I swap the stainless steel cutlery too 🤷‍♀️

Borris · 25/06/2024 21:33

Yes I do as the silver rim is slowly being washed off and so I like it to be washed off evenly

Bingo. Sensitive people who understand this unite!

Crockery gets scratched and worn with knife marks etc over time.

^This.

Same with jewellery! Don't let your earrings get sad because you never wear them.

BrummieCahoots · 25/06/2024 21:57

I feel better now! I always do this so the bottom plates aren't sad

Thank god someone has some sense on this thread! This op^^

fungipie · 25/06/2024 22:01

Never ever even thought about it. Sorry to say but I find this 'weird'.

Borborygmus · 25/06/2024 22:43

Yes, I do this sometimes, though mainly to ensure they all get washed fairly frequently.

Wizardcalledoz · 25/06/2024 22:52

I have teenage boys so the plates all get used and regularly go on week long holidays to the land of smells

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 25/06/2024 23:00

Genuinely don't have the time or inclination to care about doing this.

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 25/06/2024 23:08

It's also important - especially if you have a large window made up of lots of individual small rectangular sections - to carefully rotate which ones you look through.

The last thing you want to be doing is wearing out some of them prematurely with your own eye-laser-beams, whilst other unloved ones stay pristine and outlive them by years Grin

Yes, as somebody who was a student and shared houses with people who would quite happily butter their toast with a fork or a spoon once the knives were all dirty, I think that OP may be coming at this from a place of unrecognised huge personal privilege Grin

Ghostlyfeet · 25/06/2024 23:12

I do this with plates bowls and cups... So they don't feel left out. Nothing to do with patterns.
Crazy I know

Squidwitch · 25/06/2024 23:14

I used to let them naturally rotate themselves, like a tarot deck, but since I bought a four piece set each of giraffe, zebra and elephant, I can't possibly let the atrocity occur of 3 elephants, 2 giraffes and 1 zebra sit disgustingly in the front stack, instead of 2 of each. I worry about things like this so I don't have to worry about the fact that half my kitchen floor is missing, or that parts of my garden are growing into mild jungles. Also each of my 3 zoflora bottles take it in turns to have a lid full soak the dishcloth. Imagine the pain they'd feel being overlooked.

Squidwitch · 25/06/2024 23:17

Also, all curtains must be pulled right over left. Anything else is horrendous and the chaos it would make would probably shake the chimney down

That was my immediate reaction to this thread too, and no-one can convince me that isn't the correct answer.

TuesdayWhistler · 25/06/2024 23:35

You know what

I never put my plates away...

🤣

There's only me and DD tbf so we use, wash up and put on Drainer until the next use.
