Does anyone else not have or want a dishwasher?

We had our new kitchen fitted at Christmas and everyone that comes round keeps asking why we don't have a dishwasher

I hate them and don't want one, reason enough!

I got my first one a year ago, and found it an entirely underwhelming experience. should have filled the space with a tumble drier instead!

redadmiral · 02/04/2008 14:12

People say they changed their life, and I seem to e always washing up... BUT... I can't stand the steamy smell of them when you open them - reminds me of my fist awful job in a hotel...

Botbot · 02/04/2008 14:12

Wouldn't mind one but our kitchen doesn't have much space, and it was a choice of a dishwasher or a washing machine. It isn't even particularly tiny ? it just has four doors opening from it so doesn't have much wall space. If only they'd taken these problems into consideration when the house was built in 1923. Bah.

brimfull · 02/04/2008 14:13

not wanting a dishwasher-are you mad

fluffyanimal · 02/04/2008 14:14

Well it did change our lives when we got one. However, we have a tumble dryer that we never use, and tbh I can't see us ever bothering.

Anna8888 · 02/04/2008 14:14

Madness, madness, madness

cheesesarnie · 02/04/2008 14:16

i was dead againgst them(thought it was lazy etc)until my uncle pointed out i could hide dirty dishes in it until i had full load!now i couldnt not have it.

doggiesayswoof · 02/04/2008 14:16

I don't have one and am currently desperately trying to work out where to put one/how to get it plumbed in without totally re-fitting the kitchen.

Sorry, I don't agree!

littlerach · 02/04/2008 14:19

I don't have one, much to MIL's disgust!
I don't think i need one.

Don't have a t/drier either.

Lazycow · 02/04/2008 14:19

Well I've never had one before (am 43 years old). we don't have much kitchen space and that was always a reason for not getting one but in the end we got a slimline one a year ago and I would never do without one again if I could possibly help it.

I must be very disorganised or something but when I didn't have a dishwasher I used to washup at least 5-6 times a day and if I was baking etc it would be more than that. If nothing else my hands are very grateful.

chopchopbusybusy · 02/04/2008 14:19

Dishwashers are wonderful things. They help keep the kitchen tidy, wash everything better than by hand and most importantly save loads of time.

pedilia · 02/04/2008 14:20

well I think it safe to say that I am in the monority

Ah now I have one, much to MIL's disgust!

preggersagain · 02/04/2008 14:21

life without a dishwasher is too painful to imagine

AnAngelWithin · 02/04/2008 14:22

not got one. would like one but havent got the room for one. that solves that! unless we ever move house.

Lazycow · 02/04/2008 14:23

I agree that they wash better than by hand. My cutlery always used to look quite manky and I never understood why everyone else's was always gleaming- nowadays mine gleams too.

Also if you want to tidy the kitchen you don't NEED to wash up you just stack it in the dishwasher and either put it on or leave it until there is more stuff to fill up it up. Either way the kitchen looks tidy but in a fraction of the time.

frisbyrat · 02/04/2008 14:23

Not got one. Am a splendid washer-upper.

saadia · 02/04/2008 14:24

When we had our new kitchen installed dh insisted on having a dishwasher, I was not that keen on having one as I thought I was managing fine without one. I don't always use it but now I wouldn't be without it as there are times when I desperately need it, like when I am ill with flu, after ds2 was born, when we have people over for dinner. The thing I really like is that everything comes out dry so can be out away immediately.

choccypig · 02/04/2008 14:24

Cheesesarnie - absolutely agree, we are a small family, so I just stack dirties in till it's full then set off a wash. If I had the room, I'd get two, so I could use straight from the clean one, and stack into the other..
Actually mine broke down last week, and I thought I'd try without, as I could do with the extra cupboard space. But unless you wash after every snack, (v. wasteful of water) you end up with dirty dishes everywhere.

nailpolish · 02/04/2008 14:25

i had one in my old house - never wanted it - but FIL insisted on buying us one as a house warming - we moved last year and left it behind - i was glad to see the back of it - hated it and am refusing to have one in my new house

waste of a cupboard

i like standing at the sink admiring the view out the window. plus its ten minutes of peace listening to the radio by myself in the kitchen

also, we dont ahve enough dishes to have a dishwasher. when i had one, i wouldnt put it on til it was full. when it was half full, we had no dishes in the cupboards, so we used to ahve to take plates/cups out of dishwasher to wash to by hand to use!

pedilia · 02/04/2008 14:25

Yay frisby

I don't but I had a dream last night that I did and I was really pleased.
Maybe my subconscious is telling me something?

To be honest I quite enjoy doing the washing up, and it's such a faff to scrape and rinse things before they go in the dishwasher. Plus dishwasher detergent always makes things smell funny.

Katisha · 02/04/2008 14:26

Am having new kitchen (eventually). Not having dishwasher! Never had one, don't want one!

Anna8888 · 02/04/2008 14:29

I think dishwashers should be compulsory

Alishanty · 02/04/2008 14:30

Haven't got one and don't want one. I don't find the washing up too bad if I keep on top of it which I do. We had one in our house when I was a student and it was just as much hassle as no one could be bothered to load and unload it plus you still have to wash pans etc not to mention the electric. Don't have a tumble dryer or microwave either, maybe I'm just old-fashioned!
