Cleaning washing machine draw (above where water comes through)

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 25/04/2024 17:25

How do you do it?!

I take the draw out, soak and clean.

Now here is my problem. The little holes above the draw where the water comes through. It gets filthy and black.

Currently I scrub with a toothbrush, wipe black scum away with anti bac wipes, then get a turkey baster and squirt water on it and keep wiping.

Do you have a better way? Jez there has to be!

I don’t think I have ever cleaned the washing machine drawer in my life.

BobnLen · 26/04/2024 22:08

I spray HG mould remover in there but do it just before going on holiday or when I'm not going to do washing straight after to make sure is all gone. Flash with bleach also used to work fairly well

KeeeeeepDancing · 26/04/2024 22:23

It is a drawer. Why do you call it a draw?

dementedpixie · 26/04/2024 22:25

I also use a toothbrush. I spray cleaner and use a cloth too.

And yes, it's a drawer

Came in to say the same! I don't understand using the word draw instead of drawer. Seriously how can you get through 13 years of school and not know this! Does my head in. Sorry OP but it grinds my gears

TheShellBeach · 26/04/2024 22:26

I soak my drawer in bleach.

Ofmince · 26/04/2024 22:33

Take the drawer out after every wash and leave it on the side to dry until the next use; the inside won't get so damp and mouldy.

I spray mould remover, leave for a bit and then use an old electric toothbrush to scrub the inside of the drawer slot.

Then run the washing machine on a hot cycle with just some vinegar in the drum before using it to wash anything.

Ofmince · 26/04/2024 22:38

Also, for all the sarky comments about draw vs drawer, if you read the OP's post properly then you will realise she isn't actually asking about the draw/drawer, she's asking about how to clean the little holes at the top of the drawer box.

No need to be rude. But if correcting someone's spelling on a housekeeping forum is your idea of fun on a Friday night, crack on I guess 🤣🤣

Schum · 26/04/2024 22:47

I use the little tepe toothbrushes and stick them in each hole after spraying with mould and mildew spray. They leave for a bit and rinse off.

carerlookingtochangejob · 26/04/2024 22:47

Take it out and put it through the dishwasher 😂

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 26/04/2024 22:47

Thank you all, especially for pointing out my spelling mistake.

You are right, it clearly is a drawer not a draw. When I posted yesterday I had received bad news and trying to distract myself from it.

@Ofmince thank you for being kind x

Oh bless. Fair enough OP. I just find it odd so many people say draw now. It's like the word has changed?

Anyway, just give the entire thing a scrub?
Maybe try wiping with dettol washing machine cleaner on a cloth?

Or just close it & not look at it?!

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 26/04/2024 22:55

@BluebellsareBlue I understand obviously, but why be so mean about it?

Does it make you feel better for making me feel stupid?

Just I wouldn’t dream of pointing it out

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 26/04/2024 22:57

@KeeeeeepDancing thank you, closing and not looking at it seems the best option 😂

Redhothoochycoocher · 26/04/2024 23:00

OP best to focus on the posts that actually reply to your question and ignore the rest. Not very nice of people to post in that tone over a spelling error and they need to save their ire for something more serious. Doesn't cost anything to be a bit more considerate does it?

Notsonifty50 · 26/04/2024 23:02

Do you leave the drawer open when the washing machine isn't in use? I do and rarely clean the drawer. It never goes mouldy either.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/04/2024 23:05

I use this and some bleach spray. It’s the same concept as a toothbrush but much less effort

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 26/04/2024 23:06

@Redhothoochycoocher you are right I know, thank you

@Notsonifty50 i don’t, maybe that’s where I am going wrong. Always leave the drum door open, cannot think why I have not thought of the drawer door! I will give it a good scrub and always leave open after, hopefully that is where I am going wrong!

@TheFairyCaravan img that looks a bit like my toothbrush 😂. Sure I have a spare oral b one somewhere, I am going to try that 😊

I stopped using fabric conditioner and now no longer get any black mould or gunk in the drawer or the bit above it. Just empty the water out of the drawer.

Glulam · 26/04/2024 23:17

Toothbrushes are excellent for all sorts of cleaning tasks. I wonder if there is a difference in washing machine hygiene depending on where one lives in the country and how hard or soft the water is. My washing machine gets disgusting in South East of England but friends and relatives with soft water in South Wales never seem to have the same issues.

I stopped using conditioner years ago, no more mould and no difference in the results.

whatsbestforme · 26/04/2024 23:20

Yes if you tip yourself upside down and look, those holes can get mouldy.
White vinegar on a cloth?

No it doesn't make me feel good if you feel stupid. It wasn't a spelling mistake, yiu did it repeatedly so that's how you thought the word was spelled, probably because that how the word sounds to your ear. I do feel good about the fact I've corrected an error and that you're unlikely to make that error again which, if you did do it again, others to think you may be stupid. Which I agree you are absolutely not. Therefore a good deed has been done. I hope your drawer was able to be cleaned x

Wow are you always so condescending @BluebellsareBlue ?
