What laundry detergent do you use and do you use fabric softener

I often get given bags of hand me down clothes for my children and I'm always curious what detergents people use because the clothes smell different to ours (but I don't want to ask those mums in case it comes across as rude!).
We use Aldi non bio powder (seems to not smell of much) and sometimes if I can get them on offer fairy non bio pods (I like the smell of these). No fabric softener and never have because growing up a sibling had eczema which was aggravated by fabric softener.
I always think other people's clothes smell nicer than ours!! But maybe they are all using fabric softener...

I use powder mostly and sometimes gel. Fabric softener (lenor outdoorables) or laundry sanitiser depending on what I'm washing

Countrygirlxo · 23/03/2024 22:34

It will be the softener. I use a Aldi gel and a range of fairy, lenor and comfort. I like to switch it up and change every few weeks because I become nose blind.
The lenor gel with built in lenor softener is also good, as is the pods

AnnetteKurtan · 23/03/2024 22:36

I use Tallow & Ash to get things smelling fancy 😂

Livedandlearned · 23/03/2024 22:45

Fairy pods

Barbarachicken · 23/03/2024 22:45

I use supermarket own brand non bio powder & lenor unstoppables, smells amazing.

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2024 22:49

I dont want my laundry to smell of anything! I use Aldi or Lidl Bio powder. No fabric softener of scented balls as both of these are really bad for the environment and completely unnecessary.

flapjackfun · 23/03/2024 22:59

I’m currently using Aldi coconut wash powder and the occasional blue lenor on bedding. My teenage boy actually said to me today that his laundry smelt lovely!

CranfordScones · 23/03/2024 23:25

Aldi liquid. I use a squirt of white vinegar instead of conditioner. Works fine.

LenaLamont · 23/03/2024 23:27

Fabric conditioner is terrible for fabric.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 23/03/2024 23:35

Another vote for Tallow and Ash, it smells beautiful and is designed for sensitive skin. We all react badly to most detergent., but not this and it’s lovely to be able to use softener too..

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2024 23:39

I hate strong smelling laundry detergent so I use Aldi bio powder and no fabric conditioner.

TheTripThatWasnt · 23/03/2024 23:41

Smol, which I started using purely because of the lack of smell. And definitely no fabric softener. I can't stand artificial smelling laundry. Fabric softener is purely a marketing invention (and I say that as someone whose whole career has been spent in marketing!)

It might be a marketing invention but as someone who is very sensory oriented i love my laundry to have scents that i find comforting .

Copperoliverbear · 24/03/2024 01:09

I used smol capsules and I use lenor outdoorable or fairy softener.

Meadowfinch · 24/03/2024 01:12

Tesco non-bio powder. No fabric softener.

I line dry sheets & clothes, and much prefer the crisp texture and fresh scent. I dislike the synthetic sweetness of added perfume.

LastnightIDreamedofManderley · 24/03/2024 01:22

Persil non bio powder, and Dettol Spring Blossom cleanser in the fabric softener drawer. But good to bear in mind even if someone else used exactly the same products as me, the clothes would always smell a bit different due to the natural smells of their own house

Bluebellsinthewind · 24/03/2024 01:37

We use persil non bio and no softener. If I find stains on sheets/towels etc then I just throw in a few scoops of the big pink tub of vanish granules.

Edited to add vanish granules always get the stains out. And I put my washing machine on minimum twice a month on a long hot wash.(empty to give it a good clean) Plus I keep the washing machine door open whenever possible.

Hope my tips help op

M&S Lavendar and Geranium for whites, Sandalwood and Bergamot for colours. With their Sandalwood and Rose fabric softener. There used to be a Jasmine and Chamomile softener from Markies I liked even more but can’t get it now.

Before that I liked the tropical range from Asda.

VioletCold · 24/03/2024 02:10

I always use Persil liquid, either bio or non-bio depending on what I'm washing. Then a Comfort fabric softener, unless I'm washing towels. Usually whichever one I can buy in bulk on Amazon.

ScottBakula · 24/03/2024 03:45

I use Daz powder and no softener.
I don't see the point in it and don't like the smell of lots of them.

Someone on my street has their tumble dryer hose sticking out of the window.
I live about 20 doors away and can smell every time she does the washing .
God knows how much scented stuff she uses!

curlywillow · 24/03/2024 03:53

I buy whatever is cheapest. Generally a Tesco own brand bio. No softener but I do use the scent granules in some washes (mainly for bedding).

You become scent blind unless you change regularly

LastnightIDreamedofManderley · 24/03/2024 05:05

Out of interest, in the cost of living crisis, has anyone noticed any real difference in using e.g. Tesco own brand washing powder?
I really want to but had read some bad reviews which put me off.

Kalevala · 24/03/2024 05:49

I use whatever the big box of powder is from aldi/lidl then line dry whenever possible, checking the weather and putting the machine on delay to get it out before work. I always wonder what musty smells people are trying to cover up with fabric conditioner.

Caspianberg · 24/03/2024 05:54

Persil or Ariel Bio powder. I buy the big boxes and it lasts ages. Gets every stain out ie Ds wore washable nappies that were white white still after 2 years.
Cleans white bedding great

LouS84 · 24/03/2024 05:57

I use skin salve laundry powder because I have sensitive skin so try to avoid fragrances / extra chemicals.
