What laundry detergent do you use and do you use fabric softener

I often get given bags of hand me down clothes for my children and I'm always curious what detergents people use because the clothes smell different to ours (but I don't want to ask those mums in case it comes across as rude!).
We use Aldi non bio powder (seems to not smell of much) and sometimes if I can get them on offer fairy non bio pods (I like the smell of these). No fabric softener and never have because growing up a sibling had eczema which was aggravated by fabric softener.
I always think other people's clothes smell nicer than ours!! But maybe they are all using fabric softener...

Sainsbury's Lavender & Jasmine bio powder for everything apart from gym/sports stuff so use Halo.
Fab Softner is always Lenor Outdoorables Northern Solstice.

I love how even a week later towels/bedding in the airing cupboard & clothes in the wardrobe/drawers smell lovely.
However I don't gas the whole street out & make people cough & splutter with the smell of our laundry, it's just our family are human bloodhounds & can smell even the faintest thing when others don't

SendARavenToRiverRun · 24/03/2024 06:12

I always used Aldi bio. The green one. Then whatever softener is on offer. I'm liking the northern solstice outdoorable one at the moment. Seems a nice combination. Line drying makes a huge difference to the longevity of the smell imo. Nothing nicer.

I've started using laundry sanitiser and the clothes seem to smell fresher.

Out of interest, in the cost of living crisis, has anyone noticed any real difference in using e.g. Tesco own brand washing powder?
I really want to but had read some bad reviews which put me off.

I changed from Ecover to Sainsburys Greencare range. Much cheaper and I actually think it's better plus the Ecover fragrances had become way too strong.

Not used Tescos but use Lidl's ( even cheaper ) and its as good as Persil - without the Persil Pong

The best own brand I have ever used was Kirkland - Costco . We dont have Costco here and I used to get it from Amazon but they have been out of stock for months. That stuff is amazing. DH is a builder and his clothes are absolutely filthy and it got them clean

I dont like strong detergent smells. Best laundry smell in the world is line dried

LadyWithLapdog · 24/03/2024 06:55

I haven’t used fabric conditioner these past few months: unnecessary cost, unnecessary plastic and product.

Tiddlywinks63 · 24/03/2024 06:56

Another vote for Tallow and Ash, it smells beautiful and is designed for sensitive skin. We all react badly to most detergent., but not this and it’s lovely to be able to use softener too..

I bought some Tallow &Ash and its overpowering scent is awful. Even using much less than recommended it’s still too heavy a scent for me 🤢
i prefer very little Comfort conditioner and Persil bio or Aerial at half doses. My clothes are rarely dirty enough to need more, if they do then I pre soak.
Line dried is the best scent ever.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/03/2024 06:57

That doesn’t answer OP question but I thought I’d make a brief mention of the environmental impact.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/03/2024 07:01

Whatever is cheapest in savers so Fairy non bio and a generic fabric softener like Tescos
.
trying to try eco friendly brand.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/03/2024 07:04

Copperoliverbear · 24/03/2024 01:09

I used smol capsules and I use lenor outdoorable or fairy softener.

You’ve reminded me, I used to use Smol, think I’ll reorder. Very handy when it’s delivered and takes up hardly any room.

EndlesslyDistracted · 24/03/2024 07:04

Aldi powder because the smell is very faint and disappears on drying, no conditioner because I hate fragranced laundry, don't like how floppy it makes everything and it's money saved / better for the planet.

I've been using Tesco washing powder for years and really rate it. Nice, clean but subtle scent and cleans really well. I do usually use a small amount of softner too though but prefer the branded ones.

QuitMoaning · 24/03/2024 07:22

Ariel ultra but my partner works in fast food so we need something to get his chef whites very clean and no grease. All our whites are still very white. I use it in combination with soda crystals to reduce cost.

We don’t use fabric conditioner. Don’t see the point, and it costs money, and I think it is not good for fabrics but not entirely sure about that.

DomesticatedSavage · 24/03/2024 07:32

I've never used fabric conditioner, it's my pet hate when we stay in B&Bs and the bedding reeks of it.

Mishmashs · 24/03/2024 07:43

A long time ago I made my own from lavender essential oil, bicarbonate and perhaps vinegar (will have to double check the recipe). It made everything smell lovely! I recently found the bottle of lavender while clearing out the cleaning cupboard so may have another go!

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/03/2024 07:57

Wiltons Cedarwood. I love the smell, and you can buy 4l refills online. If things need a boost I add the supermarket own brand version of Vanish, which is about 1/3 of the price and just as good.

For wool, cashmere etc I use Romney Marsh Wools' Woolly Wash, which I think is a lot better than any of the delicates detergents I've tried. Lasts for ages as it's so concentrated.

beachmum1 · 24/03/2024 08:16

My mum has started using white vinegar and reckons her washing has never been so soft!

Flossflower · 24/03/2024 08:22

I use fairy non bio.
I am another one that hates fabric conditioner and don’t use it.
You should not use fabric conditioner on towels as it reduces the absorbency of them.
You should not use fabric conditioner on sports clothes as it stops them wicking.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/03/2024 08:22

I use fairy powder and no fabric softener. It gunges up your machine.

DarkDarkTimeOfLife · 24/03/2024 08:24

But maybe they are all using fabric softener...

Lenor scent boosters.
I had a free sample and it’s amazing. One of DCs friends always smells so freshly laundered and after having the free sample I realised that’s what it is. I only buy when on offer and don’t put as much in as they recommend, so it lasts longer, but I still get the scent.

madeinmanc · 24/03/2024 08:30

I don't use fabric conditioner. It's bad for the environment, for the machine and it's literally pouring money down the drain.

I use Sainsbury's Greencare bio for synthetics, liquid soap flakes for woollens and other hand washing/delicates. Or sometimes Ecover wool/silk if it's on offer. Oh and I have a box of powder that I use only for whites (because powder bleaches), so towels, bathmats, bedding. If you use powder once in a while it cleans your machine.

I find the scents of the main brands too much. Yesterday I was standing in the queue in the Post Office behind a man that stank of Persil or whatever, it was grim. It's really antisocial to go round inflicting your laundry scent on everyone else.

I use tescos own (purple box)

It's fine-my mil couldn't tell the difference between that and persil

She's been using persil her whole married life

Tescos does the job as well as the posher stuff

Crichella · 24/03/2024 08:37

Tesco bio liquid detergent
Tesco's own fabric softener
