Why is my dishwasher doing this?!?

My dishwasher keeps leaving my glasses dirty. There's always tiny "bits" all over them (doesn't seem to stick to the plates fortunately!!) I've washed the filter, made sure the water jet holes are clear but it's still doing it and driving me crazy!!!! Any advice?

Have you topped up the salt and rinse aid? Mine does that when they've run out.

Sallycinnamum · 30/09/2023 08:19

Mine does this and it drives me round the bend.

I always make sure the salt and rinse aid is topped up. It seems to be worse if I put it on an eco wash.

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 30/09/2023 08:21

Do a hot cycle and pour some vinegar into the machine to give it a good clean.

IllhaveaPpleaseBob · 30/09/2023 08:38

Our old dishwasher used to do this, and my fussy son used to get very annoyed, taking multiple glasses out of the cupboard till he found one he deemed clean enough. I was forever scrubbing the filter but it seemed to happen even when there were only tiny bits in it. The dishwasher broke down, got a different make and it never happens now. My conclusion was it wasn't a very good dishwasher!

What's more annoying is that I put one of those cleaning tablets in with the wash and put it on a higher temperature and it still did it! Argh!!

Do you live in a hard water area?

whensmynexthol1day · 30/09/2023 08:41

Try cleaning every bit of it you can- the holes in the spinning arms, the filters etc.

The other thing I find sometimes causes it is mashed potatoes/ rice residue or coffee grounds- I always rinse anything that has touched these.

Doingmybest12 · 30/09/2023 08:43

I try to do am empty wash on hot most weekends and it seems to help . I found if I used the tablets that do everything plus additional rinse aid it didn't work as well , not sure if it was all in my mind though. Over stacking also is a problem which my husband doesn't listen about. It is an art!

summerfunner · 30/09/2023 08:45

This happened in my dishwasher it was because I was using the wrong setting. Not sure what dishwasher you have but if using tablets you need to select 'all in one mode' in the settings, after many months of frustration this solved the issue.

summerfunner · 30/09/2023 08:47

Sorry posted too soon! Also make sure you are using salt and rinse aid even when using all in one tablets

user1471505356 · 30/09/2023 08:50

I always check the rotor does not catch on anything.

Extremely!!!!!!

I had this from fruit fibre and coffee grounds. Also in hard water and use a 3 in 1 tablet, salt and rinse aid. It's not catching on anything and I don't have a select all, I wash on 60c not echo or fast wash.
I now take care not to overload and rinse food crumbs off, anything with fruit pith like smoothie cup gets soaked in the sink as it dries up like cement then show up on drinking glasses.

If you’ve cleaned everything (filter, little holes etc) have you also tried the hottest wash it does with special dishwasher cleaner? I used to use vinegar but the special cleaner in a bottle which has a top that melts when the water gets hot enough seems to work better.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/09/2023 09:13

It’s your hard water IMO. I have it too.
Microscopic scratches from the salt create roughness for the limescale to catch on and over time it builds up and food catches on it too.
Increasing the setting on your rinse aid helps but I just polish with a tea towel as I put the glasses back. Same for knife blades. Which sort of defeats the purpose of having a DW.
Or just keep buying new glasses and recycle the old ones. IKEA Pokal (?) are cheap and cute. Or start a collection of Nutella drinking glasses. All for a good cause!

Fromage · 30/09/2023 09:13

Do you rinse things, under the tap, before loading them?

Also, do you always put the tablet/pod in the closed compartment, or toss it in the bottom of the machine?

Doing either of these things can leave dishes less than sparkling.

isthesolution · 30/09/2023 09:15

Mines the same. Very hard water. We just hand wash glasses now.

Keeping salt and rinse aid topped up does help but glasses are never properly clean 😔

Swimorsink · 30/09/2023 09:18

I am having the same problem with a 1year old Bosch dishwasher. Lots of food residue stuck to glasses and mugs. I’ve cleaned the filter and topped up rinse aid, will try adding salt next it’s so annoying! We don’t have hard water in my area so it’s not that.

Tattyhabits · 30/09/2023 09:24

I bet there's a grain of rice or two in the holes in the spinny sprayers...

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 30/09/2023 10:32

Probably due to hard water, keep salt and rinse aid topped up and use 3 in 1 tablets. Soak the glasses in soda crystals and white vinegar and clean all the shit off then start again but will probably just keep happening.

thinkfast · 30/09/2023 10:33

Have you physically cleaned the filter and the rotating arm? Ie not just run a wash with a cleaning tablet, but removed all debris?

areyouhavinglaugh · 30/09/2023 10:36

If take the top tray out and look at the runners, mine were caked in grease and grime! Despite cleaning the filter every wash.

You can't see unless to take the tray/rack out.

JadeSeahorse · 30/09/2023 10:44

I know this may sound nuts but does your filter click into place?

I have a Hisense dishwasher which is brilliant now but was having this problem shortly after I bought it.

Turned out I hadn’t realised the filter clicks into place which I hadn’t done when I took it out to clean. Once I realised this it has been brilliant ever since and not a gritty bit to be seen. Cleans glasses beautifully and is far superior to my old Bosch which was twice the price.

rwalker · 30/09/2023 10:54

Can you see the heating element could be similar to the bits of shit u get in a kettle off the element

SleepingisanArt · 30/09/2023 11:01

My dishwasher has a menu where you set the water hardness so it knows how much salt to use. We are in a very hard water area but have our water softened as it enters the house. Had to re-set the setting when the softener was installed and we still have to add salt (about once a year now!) So if you can tell your dishwasher about the water hardness you should.
