Need a new vacuum cleaner, help me choose

I am looking for a new vacuum after my upright Dyson has given up after 12 years. Loved it, great suction on carpet, rugs, and wooden floors.

Thinking of getting another Dyson but I'm also tempted to try a different brand. Leaning towards a Shark upright but I am seeing so many terrible reviews online, Dyson equally generates a lot of negativity.

Help, what do you use/recommend?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for vacuum cleaner recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best vacuum cleaners page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We have had many over the years, would never get another Dyson after having upright and cordless both shocking and while impressive for a short time became worse and worse

We got a shark upright and it was the worst thing ever crap to clean suction not worth it and constantly dropping bits back out when you finish hated it with a passion

So bought a Henry hoover last week, best hoover I have ever had! Yes it clunky and huge but wow we have 2 dogs and this hoover is the business! After reading and watching reviews we went with the Henry xtra as it had the aero turbo head fantastic for pets better than the Henry pet they have! Yes it takes bags but holds 9lts and you can get bags you can empty on Amazon

Good luck on the hunt

We were given a Miele by our neighbours who were immigrating! It is amazing!

BeMoreBarbie · 03/09/2023 07:26

Hear me out... we've been through many many hoovers due to floofy dogs. Shark and Dyson have not been up to the challenge despite their extortionate cost BUT I discovered a titan hoover from screw fix for the grand total of £40 and it has lasted years and is still going stronger than any hoover. It's amazing. I feel my job in life now is to recommend this hoover to everyone so I do every time I see these threads come up. Think of the cost saving!

TheDogsMother · 03/09/2023 07:31

We've had a Miele Cat & Dog for years and it's still going strong. I'd definitely recommend it.

Cupcakegirl13 · 03/09/2023 07:35

Another vote for Meile cat and dog here , when DH killed it by hoovering up builders rubble ( I know I should have LTB 😬 !!) I replaced it with a Shark and I regret it everyday. I live for the day it dies so Miele can reign supreme again !

The titan can handle builders rubble as it's a builders hoover. It's not pretty but it's ammmmaaaazzzziiinggggg.

Miele. Incomparable! I'm a cleaner, so I've used a lot of different ones.

Digimoor · 03/09/2023 08:18

No experience of uprights but both Miele and Henry are good

larkstar · 03/09/2023 08:27

Another vote for the Miele Cat & Dog - it must be nearly 20 years old. The suction is great for removing dog hair from the dog bed but I also have a cordless Shark which I like for a quick run around on the tiled floors in the kitchen,, hallways and bathroom - no unplugging and plugging the cord as you quickly move around from one room to another.

rockingbird · 03/09/2023 08:31

I've had many over the years.. the shark, Dyson blah blah blah. I always go back to Henry! My trusted friend.

ZenNudist · 03/09/2023 08:37

I was in your position recently. I've got on well with my old Dyson upright but it's very unwieldy and bad reviews for recent models. Require a lot of part replacement after short time.

Chose a Miele Cat & Dog c3 although I don't have pets. I don't trust the suction of new vacuums so I wanted something powerful. I used my neighbours before I bought one and was impressed. DH has used it and says its great.

Using a traditional hose vacuum rather than than an upright is easier for getting up the stairs.

I wanted a cordless but don't want a degraded battery after 2 years. My last hoover lasted about a decade or more so I'm not willing to have a kaput appliance after only a few years.

I'm on the look out for a cheap cordless for the car and day to day kitchen crumbs.

Blogdog · 03/09/2023 08:40

Miele all the way. Henry is ok but I found the hoses less flexible than the Miele ones and the shape means it’s awkward on the stairs.

Coastalcreeksider · 03/09/2023 08:52

I have a bagged upright SEBO and am contemplating getting another one just so I don't have to lug the current one up and down the stairs as they are quite heavy. As soon as I see any on offer, I'll get another one.

I've had it 8 years and it still sucks really well and I have a very hairy cat, so it has to work hard, it's been excellent. The bag holds absolutely loads before I need to change it. The bag has only been changed about five times since new.

I've had Dyson and a couple of Vax in the past, all bagless and I hated them. Having to faff about with the filter and the container hardly holds anything before you have to empty it.

Bagged all the way for me.

Margaritawithlime · 03/09/2023 08:53

Miele cat and dog. Best vacuum ever

illiterato · 03/09/2023 08:56

Miele cat and dog as a “proper hoover” and then I have a Dyson stick just for a quick daily once over downstairs ( karndean floors).

FunkyMonks · 03/09/2023 08:56

Don't waste your time on a shark hate mine it's heavy keeps falling over just hate it and really want to get a meile myself but need to know if they can cope with hair and cat fur as that was the only thing that made me get the shark the anti hair wrap.

Dyson is another crap brand not worth the money I've had a few of those utter rubbish.

BingoFucklinger · 03/09/2023 09:15

All these recommendations for Henry?! I hate that smug little bastard with a passion.

I find the head sort of sticks to the floor rather than running over it and I have to put the head directly on things to have a chance of picking them up. Not to mention the hose falls apart mid-use. And then just when you get into a rhythm, he throws a tantrum and falls over dramatically - directly into your ankles.

I absolutely love my Dyson but don't think I could buy another one after all the Brexit hypocrisy.

Not much help. Sorry!

kipperba · 03/09/2023 09:19

Absolutely hate my shark. My husband insisted on it and now all we do is complain about it. It drops bits out every time
You turn it off, the battery life is rubbish, constantly tips over and gets jammed all the time. Hate the thing. Can't wait till it's been long enough since buying it that we can justify something else

Nonplusultra · 03/09/2023 09:22

Following for recommendations. I have an ancient nilfisk that’s held together with duct tape, has had parts replaced twice and sometimes fakes its own demise mid-job. I’ve been trying to find a replacement but nothing compares to it and I end up hauling it out again anyway. One of these days it will blow up on me.
@BeMoreBarbie off to check screw fix

nc14 · 03/09/2023 09:23

I’ve heard very good things about Sebo and that’s what I plan on getting next as Miele don’t do upright vacuum cleaners (unless the cordless kind).

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 03/09/2023 09:25

Henry has good suction but is a bad follower. Good if you’ve got hard floors though. I would buy the wet and dry version next time.
The Dyson pet models are brilliant on carpet but heavy.
Robot vacuums are good but you need a proper one as well.

🥳🥳🥳 you will love it. It blows too but I'm not sure why. It may be more now with inflation but you won't look back

TeaMistress · 03/09/2023 09:32

I've just bought this
https://www.hooverdirect.co.uk/products/hl5-push-lift-upright-vacuum-cleaner-pet
Its fantastic. Powerful adjustable suction with a long cord. I bought it as a replacement for our dead 20 year old Dyson. Easy to empty. The filters and bin container are washable. Love it.

Nannyfannybanny · 03/09/2023 09:44

Borrow a friends, see what you think.,I had 3 Dysons. Over priced over engineered. I have a shark pet upright, corded, I love it. Have an open plan bungalow,no understairs cupboard,it hangs on the kitchen wall. My youngest DS has rapid cycle bipolar severe anxiety and depression OCD regarding cleaning, recently bought an upright shark. The suction is so powerful,it moves the carpet he loves it. We have 2 long hair border collies. Why do people insist on saying "hoovering" instead of vacuuming.
