How to convince husband to put tumble dryer upstairs

Incredibly boring topic but me and DH keep falling out over this.

We hair moved, traditional 30's semi with small kitchen. We want to knock through eventually but just isn't in the budget.

We have one DD nearly 2, 3 bedrooms and a large loft conversion.

Bedrooms are currently ours, Dd's, husbands office will be in the loft. We aren't having any other children.

We don't have a use for box room so far, was thinking about putting a futon bed in there for guests but can't remember the last time we had any (maybe at Xmas?)

Anyway... There is no room for a tumble dryer. It's summer so drying on the line at the moment but this just won't be practical in winter. We both work full time and are crap at remembering the laundry at the best of times, but it's mostly me who does it with DH occasionally emptying the dryer and folding if I ask. He does out it away though.

I want to put the dryer in the box room, he wants to keep it in the shed at the bottom of the garden (we have a very long lawn). I just don't think its practical to have in the shed in winter. Proved today when I had to leg it down the garden in the pissing rain to retrieve the washing so it didn't crease and it just got wet again?

He reckons it's a waste of a room (we don't have a use for it anyway?) And that it would cause condensation (we have a condenser, air vents and would open the window?

How do I convince him?

Put it in the shed. Tell him it's his job now. Wait.

RandomMess · 26/08/2023 19:23

Has the shed got electric yet?

muchalover · 26/08/2023 19:24

I don't know why washing machines and tumble dryers are still in the kitchen when the vast majority of washing comes from and returns to upstairs in bedrooms and linen cupboards.

Would save a lot of trekking if we changed.

catlady2222 · 26/08/2023 19:26

We have ours in the bathroom stacked on top of the washing machine. It's amazing. Warm towels straight for when you step out of the shower! Get it upstairs and get a proper one that can be vented directly outside. Stops the arguments then about condensation.

DrNo007 · 26/08/2023 19:29

Get a washer and dryer in one? We don't have space for a washer and a dryer so we got them rolled into one. It's a Bosch. No outside vent needed as it has a condenser and the water just drains away down the drain.

NotAsAnonymousAsYouThinkYouAre · 26/08/2023 19:29

Do you have a garage?
I think it would be too damp in the shed.. we had ours in the garage if a previous house but that was only 4 steps away from the back door.
I wouldn’t want a TD in the spare room but I also wouldn’t want it in a shed at the bottom of the garden.

Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:30

She'd already has electric and it's in there now (out the way until we decided) but I've only had to use once to quickly dry bedding when it rained!

We had thought about this but he thinks they're all crap 😅

Utility rooms should be upstairs in my opinion but If you don’t need the box room I would make it into a proper full on ironing/drying room with a Sheila’s maid, built in storage for towels, cleaning products, vacuum etc and maybe a worktop for folding etc, it would be useful to have a room dedicated to that if you have a small kitchen at the moment, once you have a bigger kitchen you can easily convert it back to a bedroom if need be but I bet it would be too useful and you would keep it!

Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:32

We don't. I also think it will be too damp in winter too as it's not exactly airtight the shed. Yah I'm not too keen about having in the spare room either but it's the better our of the two options for me.

WaitingfortheTardis · 26/08/2023 19:32

Why not suggest trying it for a while and if you later need the room for something else it can be moved again?

GeorgeBeckett · 26/08/2023 19:33

Is bathroom an option? It does seem a waste of a room but shed seems less than ideal. Or a decent washer dryer. They're better than they used to be now.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 26/08/2023 19:35

Can you just move it upstairs yourself (potentially with assistance) and leave him to chunter about it? It's usually better to ask forgiveness not permission. There's no reason for him to have the final say, he's not more important than you.

Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:36

That's my absolute dream. I would much rather have a space that was practical like that, than a room with a bed in we use twice a year when we can just put a blow up bed in the loft!

Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:36

I was thinking about just saying let's trial it for a month or so and I'll get a friend to help me out it up there. As long as it's no issues I bet he will forget about it.

Clymene · 26/08/2023 19:39

What does he want to use the box room for?

jlpth · 26/08/2023 19:40

I would swap your condenser for a cheap vented one and put the vent hose out the window. I got rid of my condenser as it ended up putting warm moist air into the room. Very annoying. Having it in a shed isn’t practical imo. If the bedroom is carpeted, put it on a wooden board for safety. A tumble dryer is only 60cm wide. It wouldn’t take the whole room.

Lilithlogic · 26/08/2023 19:41

Sell it and buy him a mangle

pikkumyy77 · 26/08/2023 19:47

He is really an idiot. I mean, sorry to be blunt but he is a complete idiot. This isn’t an argument to be having because there is zero logic to his stance. Just tell him he can put the dryer in the shed if he is proposing to take over all laundry duties, winter and summer, without complaint. If he wants to split the laundry duties with you then the laundry/dryer facilities go in the box room. A weekly chore takes precedence over a twice annual guest visit that is hypothetical at best.

Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:51

He wants to put a futon/guest bed in there as his parents are staying over Xmas night. In my opinion that would be better in his office in the loft as it's huge and will only be used a couple of times a year max.

OP posts:
Hart92 · 26/08/2023 19:52

Agree tbh 😅 I think he just doesn't want to lug it up the stairs tbh. He's done a lot of work since we moved and is nakerd, we both are. I'm going to ask some friends to help me lug it up there and hope the ease of it makes him forget about the nonsense!

OP posts:
gamerchick · 26/08/2023 19:53

Mines in a bedroom. It's vented out of the window though. We don't get condensation. It's a lot easier putting washing away if it's already up there tbh.

However if he wants in down the bottom of the garden, tell him it's now his job and the second he refuses you'll be putting it upstairs.

gamerchick · 26/08/2023 19:54

Tbh they shouldn't be left unattended. If it burns down the shed it might put a bit of a crimp in your life.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 26/08/2023 19:55

It does seem a waste of a room

I disagree, a waste of a room is one that isn’t used, so for the OP to make it into a room that would help the house function better would be an asset not a waste.

SoftPillowAllNight · 26/08/2023 19:56

We've moved our utility (washing machine, dryer, clothes airer and heated airer) to the loft (made a small utility room within a larger room). Absolute dream. Put in a pipe to drain out the dryer so no water collection etc (has a tray anyway). Anything that needs air drying goes on the airer or on hangers. Rest in the dryer. We wash everything on weekend - no time on week days.
