How to convince husband to put tumble dryer upstairs

Incredibly boring topic but me and DH keep falling out over this.

We hair moved, traditional 30's semi with small kitchen. We want to knock through eventually but just isn't in the budget.

We have one DD nearly 2, 3 bedrooms and a large loft conversion.

Bedrooms are currently ours, Dd's, husbands office will be in the loft. We aren't having any other children.

We don't have a use for box room so far, was thinking about putting a futon bed in there for guests but can't remember the last time we had any (maybe at Xmas?)

Anyway... There is no room for a tumble dryer. It's summer so drying on the line at the moment but this just won't be practical in winter. We both work full time and are crap at remembering the laundry at the best of times, but it's mostly me who does it with DH occasionally emptying the dryer and folding if I ask. He does out it away though.

I want to put the dryer in the box room, he wants to keep it in the shed at the bottom of the garden (we have a very long lawn). I just don't think its practical to have in the shed in winter. Proved today when I had to leg it down the garden in the pissing rain to retrieve the washing so it didn't crease and it just got wet again?

He reckons it's a waste of a room (we don't have a use for it anyway?) And that it would cause condensation (we have a condenser, air vents and would open the window?

How do I convince him?

We have ours in the shed, it's a vented one and permanently vented in. It's no bother at all TBH, we've had it there 20 years. Keeps the other contents of the shed dry too as the airflow is so good. We use Ikea bags to carry it all there and back, so you can carry it on your shoulder and be hands free to open and shut the door. We do have a path which helps, I might not be so keen if I had to walk through wet grass.

For years mine was in a barn attached to the house which was a pita. When I moved to the house I am in now I inherited an integrated washer/dryer which was awful, small drum. You had to take half of the load of washing out and dry half at a time.

I replaced the washer/dryer with a large drum washer and put a heat pump dryer in the under stairs cupboard, there’s a sink and loo in the room that leads to it so easy to empty.

I’d never have a dryer somewhere that wasn’t instantly accessible from the house (without going outside) again!

Before I considered the under stairs cupboard I thought about a spare bedroom or the hallway. If I had gone down that route I would have had a cupboard built for it. There’s loads of ideas on Pinterest. Obvs this is a double cupboard but you get the gist, you could have a taller cupboard with storage on top.

Some dryers have a minimum operating temperature or they fault or break so it’s better indoors.

Sounds like you’ve got the green light though 👍🏻

It would annoy me to carry the condensing tray far to drain - is there a basin near the box room?

Op if I was redesigning the house I'd put both the washing machine and the dryer upstairs.
They shed is probably too damp and the machine might rust with the dampness.

My old one in the barn was still going strong after 9 years, no rust or anything, not a posh barn, rickety old thing. I just bought a really cheap vented one for in there, you didn’t really need the vent as it was so rickety/draughty.

Emptying my water chamber requires thought! I take it out, reversing to the sink because the cupboard is slim and the chamber is the depth of the dryer long. Still rather do that once a week than trekking outside.

He wants to put a futon/guest bed in there as his parents are staying over Xmas night. In my opinion that would be better in his office in the loft as it's huge and will only be used a couple of times a year max.

I don't suppose you can get it into the loft, can you?

A laundry room upstairs is just functional. Most things need taking upstairs to put away, so the box room sounds perfect for the dryer. And you can put an airer in there too for items than don't need to be tumbled.

I don't see the point of having a room unused for 364 days of the year, because you will have visitors for 1 day.

Stairs too small unfortunately

We created an upstairs utility with washer and dryer up there, and wouldn’t have it any other way now.

Clothes stay upstairs and the airer can stay up because it’s in use 24/7. We used to have it hanging all over the house.

The only minor downside is that, as I work downstairs during the day, I can’t hear the wash finish, so need to set a timer to remind me to go and empty it.
