Just that really. It's old and gross. I would prefer to avoid nasty chemicals. Any ideas welcome! Thanks all :-)

Harpic max - Black bottle. Is brilliant. Leave it overnight

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/08/2023 12:34

God no need for boiling water filling the toilet.. it could well crack it!

VerityRoss · 23/08/2023 12:36

To everyone recommending harpic max read the safety info:

Precautions DANGER Toilet Bowl Cleaner HARPIC Power Plus Original. Contains Hydrochloric Acid Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. May be corrosive to metals. Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Keep out of reach of children. IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Immediately call a doctor. IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and if it is easy to do. Continue rinsing. Avoid release to the environment. Read label before use. Store locked up. Keep only in original container. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Dispose of contents to local regulations. If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand.

Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects and avoid release to the environment yet people happily chuck it down the loo where it is washed away. There are natural alternatives please look them up!

Bloody hell! Who's got the fragile glass toilet? Assuming you have a standard ceramic lavatory, boiling water will do it no harm.

hiredandsqueak · 23/08/2023 16:10

You need spirits of salt 500ml Kilrock Spirits Of Salt - Kilrock Spirit Of Salt 500ml Desolves Slime Hardwater Stains Bathroom Cleaning on OnBuy nothing else. Take out the water, pour in the spirit of salts leave overnight and flush nect morning it will clear the lot

TyrannosaurusSex · 23/08/2023 16:12

Viakal spray?

I'd put a liberal coating on in the morning, top it up every few hours during the day or after toilet use - repeating for up to 24 hours before flushing it away.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/08/2023 16:20

That's easy, mine has been a lot worse, plunge all the water out using a big toilet brush. Pour in round the edge lots of bleach with limescale remover. Leave for 20 mins and give a good scrub with the toilet brush. It will all come off. Then flush.

madeinmanc · 23/08/2023 16:22

DO NOT mix bleach and limescale remover!!

greenacrylicpaint · 23/08/2023 16:28

fill it with warm water and drop in a tube full of denture cleaning tablets. leave overnight and scrub with a toilet brush. you might need to repeat that a couple of times)
have heard that a dishwasher tablet also works. have personally found cola useless.
(new house toilet looked like that when we moved in)

AlltheFs · 23/08/2023 16:36

Harpic tablets. Leave them in overnight a few times and in between scrub with the liquid.

They are much better than the liquid for a bad case, I use these in my rental when some tenants leave it like this. It will all come away eventually.

And your chemistry qualification is ...?

I don’t think she needs to be a chemistry professor to state some simple information.

BaroldandNedmund · 23/08/2023 16:49

You will probably have to chip some of it off with a blunt knife after all the coke etc. I wouldn’t pumice because you’ll just scratch the enamel.

thatsn0tmyname · 23/08/2023 16:53

It's alkali based limescale so an acidic chemical such as lemon juice, cola or vinegar would sort it. But some rubber gloves, sponge out all the water, pour in loads of acidic juice and soak. Jam acid soaked cloths up under the rim. Leave to soak. Do not scrape or scratch the loo.

GG1986 · 23/08/2023 17:01

Harpic limescale remover in the Black bottle and scrub with a toilet brush x

JoBrodie · 23/08/2023 17:50

Get rid of as much water as possible either by using a plunger or toilet brush (sorry!) to push it out or find an old yogurt pot and bail it out that way. Use a cloth or loo roll to dry off the bit at the bottom.

Pour in some regular clear vinegar (300-500ml should do it). For less accessible bits I use of compressed cotton wool or face cleaning pads split in half and soaked in vinegar.

Ideally leave overnight or for a few hours.

This is where the loo brush comes into its own as you can give the basin a bit of a scrub and stuff should come off.

Flush.

Repeat if necessary (probably, in this case).

It may well be that the citric acid method is quicker (I've never used it).

I have no advice. Just here for the “after” pic!

Ha ha! I'll try to remember to post one!

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the replies. I think I'll try the citric acid method first and resort to Harpic Black or something else if that fails. I shall let you know :-)

Thanks! Good luck 😉

I recently started a new job as a cleaner, and I previously tried the famous coke trick, which didn't work for me, neither did the standard supermarket cleaners. The company I work for purchase the wholesaler stuff from a company called beal, it is simply called toilet cleaner - it works a treat

YourWinter · 11/09/2023 15:29

Another vote for citric acid but am I the only one failing to see three dots and an edit option?

YourWinter · 11/09/2023 15:30

Ah ok… 🙈

LadyEloise1 · 11/09/2023 15:41

How did it clean up @Sexisthairdressers ?
I was hoping you'd go for the coke option and we could see a before and after photo 😀

CrotchetyQuaver · 11/09/2023 15:43

Harpic black is your friend here, both the stuff in the bottle and also the tablets that dissolve underwater. Will take a few goes but will come right

BodegaSushi · 11/09/2023 16:16

Wow following for an update 😂 who knew I'd be so excited to see a toilet cleaned
