Just that really. It's old and gross. I would prefer to avoid nasty chemicals. Any ideas welcome! Thanks all :-)

Another shout for harpic max, no reason why it shouldn’t get back to sparkly white again

HerAvatar · 23/08/2023 10:35

Harpic Power in the black bottle, I tried the coke idea with ours (house had been empty a year when we moved in) and it did nothing but a full bottle of Harpic left overnight shifted the lot.

And your chemistry qualification is ...?

I don’t have a chemistry qualification 🙄but tipping Coke into a ceramic toilet is no different to tipping it into a ceramic mug or sink. It’s a very commonly done thing and if people were regularly getting gassed to death from doing so I think we might have heard about it 🤣

DiscontentedWoman · 23/08/2023 10:35

Another shout

DiscontentedWoman · 23/08/2023 10:36

Citric acid or Nancy Birtwhistle's pure magic for sure.

An edited post? Whaaaaat?

I thought the same!! and I have just found the edit button!!!!

Didn't Kim and Aggie say a Brillo pad was the thing for this?

Harpic tablets are the biz. Kilrock if they don't work.

Annab1983 · 23/08/2023 10:48

Harpic power plus tablets, it might take a few overnights but no scrubbing required 🙂 Was so satisfying when big chunks of limescale dropped off/was able to be chipped off!

Ahhbeecee · 23/08/2023 10:51

Op wants to avoid harsh chemicals...the way to go is citric acid...and trust me it will work...no need for scrubbing.

Loving the edit button BTW!

Unescorted · 23/08/2023 10:53

@MrTiddlesTheCat You would have to combine it with something that contained chlorine eg bleach to create chlorine gas. By the looks of that toilet it has been a long time since it was acquainted with a cleaning product that contained bleach.

OP it is discoloured limescale - put something acidic in eg coke (doesn't work as too dilute btw), vinegar, limescale remover, powdered citric acid. Leave for a long time. As a previous poster said reduce the water level down first so you can add more of the acidic thing. After soaking overnight flush & scrub. Repeat until it goes.... ours started coming off in flakes once it had been treated a few times.

Harpic Power Plus over night.

sunshinesupermum · 23/08/2023 10:57

Another vote for Harpic Power Plus

SprinkleRainbow · 23/08/2023 10:57

According to Google bicarb of soda and lemon juice should lift limescale and make a toilet sparkle.
According to my toilets (hard water area) it does nothing.
The only thing that seems to work is Harpic Power Plus (black bottle) but it is very high in potent chemicals.
I've tried many natural methods on my toilets and only harpic works.

madeinmanc · 23/08/2023 10:57

Although vinegar is a great idea for "normal" levels of limescale, it's going to be to weak to tackle this. Unless you're happy doing it over and over for several days. Get citric acid.

CMOTDibbler · 23/08/2023 10:59

Citric acid is really good for limescale. Following Nancy Birtwhistles tips I put it in my kettle and it came up sparkling where descaler had failed

Ladyoftheknight · 23/08/2023 11:01

Push the water out with a toilet brush (like a plunger) and use the black bottle of Harpic. I've tried natural products and they just don't do anything, a bit of harpic every now and then to keep on top of it won't harm you.

Kurokurosuke · 23/08/2023 11:05

I have no advice. Just here for the “after” pic!

Yes! It came off ours in big sheets, it's strange the things that make us happy Grin

EDIT BUTTON?! - it's in the 3 dots at the bottom. Thank you MN!!

madeinmanc · 23/08/2023 11:10

Citric acid works just as well as Harpic or whatever.

Summerharvest · 23/08/2023 11:15

Straight bleach works?

Pasadenadreaming · 23/08/2023 11:20

Nothing can beat the harpic in the black bottle (can't remember its actual name) for this! It is amazing.

madeinmanc · 23/08/2023 11:24

Not bleach; this is limescale which needs an acidic cleaner. Bleach would just leave the limescale, whitened, and then it would stain again.

longwayoff · 23/08/2023 11:27

Buy a kilo of citric acid from Amazon and a kilo of bicarbonate.of soda. These will deal with every cleaning necessity known, see internet. The citric acid, as well as clearing your loo, will clean scale safely from kettle and coffee maker. One scoop into half full kettle. Boil. Tip the hot water down the loo or sink to keep grease or scale free.
