I've been looking at machines all week and it's doing my head in, been without one for over a week now so really need to purchase something in the next day or so.

I would really like one that is quiet and that's quite important, so have been looking at LG direct drive, there is one within my price range, ( don't really want to spend more than 400) but the programs aren't great which is also important.
My old machine had the fast washes which I never really used, then the longer cotton and eco, but it also had an in-between 1hr daily wash which I used a lot, specially on a weekend morning when you get up, see the sun's out and want to get a decent wash done quick so you can get it out on the line.
The LG also has a longer warranty, so I would hazard a guess that it would hopefully last longer too, hence paying a bit more.

Now, the engineer advised not to get a hotpoint or hoover as they tend to go wrong more, but they are the machines that have much better programs! Quick washes, daily washes and the ability to reduce the time on certain programs, I've found one that is just under £300 so also a lot cheaper.
They don't look as sleek, but they have all the same features apart from the quieter motor.
They only have the standard warranty.

The engineer said most machines only last 3-5yrs now, and to get a Beko, as it will do what you need, usually cheaper to repair or are cheap enough to replace when they do go wrong, however looking at them, they are not that much cheaper really once you opt for a 8-9kg and 1400 rpm which is what I want, ones I have seen which might suit are always out of stock!

So I can't make a decision
Buy the more expensive LG, which would probably last longer and have the longer warranty, would be quiet, but longer programs, which may or may not suit me, or go for the much cheaper hotpoint which may only last a few years, will be noisier but have more convenient cycles?

It's quite funny as I am typing this I can hear next doors washing machine on its spin cycle, I've never heard it before :-)

Get the LG one.
I have never had much luck with machines so pay a bit more now. Currently have an AEG one and its fab. It was under 500 two years ago.

Are you sure there's no way to get the medium-short wash on the LG? My new machine doesn't have a Daily Wash setting, but I can put it on cottons and then on the options panel where you do the pre-wash/spin speed/temp selection, I can also select Short. It then does the same thing as Daily Wash.

If you can afford a Miele, get one. None of this 5-7 years business.

Miele warranty is now 2 years across the board. I imagine OP's doing better than that with the LG, at half the price.

I bought an LG recently, to replace my ancient Siemens. It has a short wash programme and everything else I need. I'm very happy with it on the whole. The only thing that annoys me is that it doesn't seem to have a spin only programme, just a rinse and spin, but that's a minor complaint. I like that it has a direct drive. It's super quiet, even when spinning.

After years of very short-lived hoovers and the like, (final straw was a hoover where the door broke and the new door broke within a couple of weeks),we bought an LG. It has a 14minute wash, a turbo wash of59mins and loads of others. However, if you want to increase spin speed, this does increase the length of the cycle.
I am really pleased with how quiet it is and how good the 1400 spin is. Keeping fingers crossed it lasts better than previous makes.
Just to add, the door seems a much better quality, not as light and plastic as my previous machine.

Get the LG as they last a long time and withstand hard work. Beko ok. But not Bosch it’s crap unfortunately

Thanks all, I had delivery of my new LG washing machine yesterday so I'm glad most people said go for the LG/more expensive ones.
I've only just done a second wash in it, but I think it was the right choice.
Its a lot quieter on spin than my old one, which will make all the difference.

@Magneta no it definitely doesn't have a short option on this one, it has a 14 min and the next shortest one is the mixed load at around 1hr 20, depending on weight/spin

I'll probably use the mixed one most of the time anyway, and I suppose it's not much longer than the daily 59min I had on my old one.
It looks really nice as I managed to get a nice graphite one and can tell its good quality so this compensates for the slightly longer programs, so fingers crossed it will last a good long while.
I'll use the longer eco and cotton programs when I am organised enough to put stuff in the night before to auto start in the morning.

@DramaAlpaca are you sure it doesn't have a spin only as its not obvious as its not listed on the programs, but if you turn the machine on, do not select a program and press the spin button it will do a spin only, I just tried that on mine and it worked, might be worth a try on yours?

@Lloki ooh, thank you, that sounds promising - I'm at work right now but I'll have a look when I get home. I'll report back of course!

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2023 21:47

@Lloki reporting back as promised - yes, it worked! Thank you so much.

Lloki · 11/08/2023 15:44

@DramaAlpaca glad I could help 😊

We have the Samsung Ecobubble. It's s smidge out of your budget, but we had a reconditioned one for over a decade which finally gave up the ghost so have gone with the same again (but from new).

The "mixed load" wash is what we use - it's 1h6m but it does a spin check first before Aby water goes in to weigh the load. Then the time tweaks slightly. A normal load for us take about 56 minutes. It also has linger settings if you like, a service wash setting and a range of other settings.

I've always been happy with Bosch. They were made for a while in Turkey and there were issues but I see this model is made in Poland. https://www.johnlewis.com/bosch-series-4-wan28250gb-freestanding-washing-machine-8kg-load-1400rpm-spin-white/p110489157

Not the point. Miele last forever (mine is 23 years old, never seen an engineer). A Miele warranty is irrelevant IMO, as you shouldn't 'need' it.

I personally would go for bottom of the range Miele. You don't need all the electronic all singing all dancing gismos - more to go wrong. Basic every time.

Ariela · 11/08/2023 16:30

(and yes I know OP is now sorted, but thought I should explain Miele)
