HELP!! maggots in wheellybin, bins don’t get emptied for another week.

Omg, the bins full, it doesn’t get emptied for another week (2weekly rota), I recycle cardboard and bottles and tins and glass but we still struggle.

they’re everywhere, on the outside of the bin , loads inside, there was nothing yesterday.

is there anything I can do to stop it from at least getting worse until next week (apart from setting fire to the bin 😂)

You can empty the bags out and wash it out with bleach and water. Rinse it into a drain somewhere.

HolHell · 18/07/2023 08:15

Um, empty and wash it?

Or hire a wheel bin cleaner.

blackheartsgirl · 18/07/2023 08:16

The bags I presume are full of maggots, and I’ve got a phobia about them

Bleach is your friend

Ohyousillydivvy · 18/07/2023 08:17

Can you throw some bleach in, would this kill off the maggots?

After your bins are emptied, wash it out and air dry thoroughly. Then throw in some cheap cat litter at the bottom as it soaks up the bin juices. So less moisture for maggots to hatch and fester.

Hopeandmoss · 18/07/2023 08:17

Grab some lemon flash (the sort you put in a bucket to wash the floor). Make it up with very hot water and throw over the outside of the bin. Then do the bin lid and tip some (not too much) over the bin contents. The hot water should kill the maggots and any eggs and the citrus scent should deter flies. You may have to repeat if you don’t get them all. In future be careful about always ensuring your bin lid is closed as this deters flies.

Tiredmummaoftwo · 18/07/2023 08:18

Cover it in boiling hot water. Get all the eggs which will usually be around the lip of the bin.

I hate them too so touching the bags is a no go for me.

Make sure the lid is always kept shut and it should stop it happening.

wheresmymojo · 18/07/2023 08:19

Honestly....I would just leave it.

They'll turn into flies and bugger off. Sure, they may lay more eggs which become more maggots but those still left will be emptied out when the bin gets emptied.

Then, when empty, do everything suggested above.

IMO life is too short to spend time wading through maggot infested rubbish.

blackheartsgirl · 18/07/2023 08:20

Thank you! I will try the lemon flash, and the cat litter tip is a great idea.

will try bleach if all else fails

Don't know where my post went. Trying again. This is great, use it in both your inside and outside bins. Get this specific one because it contains citronella which is a deterrent to flies

Thank you for those who had useful suggestions, will try them today,

I can’t bear maggots, they give me nightmares. I just feel sorry for the binmen

You could also have put the bin somewhere open and leave the lid open. The magpies will have those maggots gone before you know it. Any at the bottom you won’t see until the bins are emptied then bleach and hose it out.

I would leave it too, open the lid and the birds will have them gone in no time

Boiling water is your friend.

Make sure your bin isn't left in the sun.

Agree.

dementedpixie · 18/07/2023 08:24

Pour some boiling water on top of them as that kills them

We get maggots every year in our outdoor food bin. It's gross but normal.

blackheartsgirl · 18/07/2023 08:25

ive Heard good things about bin buddy.

I did consider leaving the bin lid open for the birds bud I’d then worry that the birds would go for the rubbish bags

Exactly this, wait until the bin is empty and then you can deal with it more effectively

This is what I cant stand about bin collections being fortnightly, its really not hygenic

clarrylove · 18/07/2023 08:25

Do you have food waste in your wheelie bin then? What are they being attracted to? All our food waste goes into a separate caddy here, which is much easier to keep clean and is emptied every week by the bin men.

dementedpixie · 18/07/2023 08:27

Leaving the lid open just releases the smell. A maggoty bin smells gross

Boiling water. Spray some fly spray in too and that will get any flies in there too. Don't know if it also kills maggots

We have a separate food/garden waste bin too but it's only emptied every 2 weeks so we get a maggot problem every summer. The other bins are every 3 weeks

TommyandGina · 18/07/2023 08:39

Fly spray is your friend here, kills the maggots quickly. Keep the lid almost closed and blast plenty in.

Letsnotargue · 18/07/2023 09:37

Could the maggots have got in on some waste? We looked after a dog for a friend once, he was very fussy about his food and would often not eat all of it so we left it down for him to snack on during the day. After a week we had an explosion of maggots in our bin even though it had been kept closed. The flies had laid eggs on the dog food, which was then tipped into a bin bag and then into the bin where they hatched into maggots.

If there’s anything like this, identifying it will help stop this happening in the future.

I sympathise as I found it a massive shock and I’m not massively bothered by any creepy crawlies.

blackheartsgirl · 18/07/2023 22:43

Yes! Come to think of it, one of our dogs didn’t eat her dinner a couple of times
last week and I’d left it for a couple of hours and then put it in the bin so there’s a possibility

Ours are every 3 weeks 😵. I'm so over it already.
