…what do you do with the bedding in between guests?

Do you wash immediately after a guest leaves and put it back on the bed? (Potentially gets dusty before next guest)

Do you leave the dirty bedding on and wash it just before the new guest? (Sweat etc gets soaked in, any unnoticed stains may set)

Or do you wash it immediately and put it away and leave the bed there until the next guest is it about to arrive? (Bed looks ugly, duvet and pillows etc can get dusty)

Immediately send my husband into the spare room to sleep because his snoring will have been driving me mad whilst the visitors were there, and he won’t mind sleeping in the dirty visitor sheets. Insist he takes his own pillow with him so as not to dribble on the nice guest pillows. Put guest pillowcases in the wash, and hide nice guest pillows from dirty snoring dribbling husband.

JadeSeahorse · 06/07/2023 13:32

We rarely have guests but I always wash everything - duvet, mattress topper, pillows
and all bedding prior to their arrival and then do the same once they leave.

My husband's sister stays with us at least once per year and is our only relatively regular guest. She thinks I'm mad! 🤣

I am admittedly something of a neat freak and love having everything spotless so don't take advice from me.😂

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 06/07/2023 13:37

I used to do option (1) but am now resigned to the fact that DH will inevitably decide to do some angle-grinding/clean out a hamster's cage/strip down a motorbike on any provocatively clean bedclothes. So I go for option (3) but with a bedspread.

Flatandhappy · 06/07/2023 13:41

Wash soon after guests leave and put back on. After some awful experiences strongly discourage guests so more likely to want to sleep there myself to avoid snoring husband.

WolfFoxHare · 06/07/2023 13:44

I make work for myself! I wash the bedding after I have guests and put another set on, because I hate having it unmade. Then I cover the bed with a throw because the cats like to sleep on there sometimes. When we have guests again, I strip the stuff that's been on in the meantime and put a clean set on. Sometimes if I'm feeling lazy I just fold up the stuff hasn't been slept in and put it back on again after the guests have gone. I do have a lot of bedding and plenty of room to dry it though. And apparently too much time on my hands.

MintyIguana · 06/07/2023 13:51

Depends how smelly they were. If they seemed pretty hygienic I might leave it but if they were a bit grim I'd pop it straight in on hot.

BreviloquentBastard · 06/07/2023 13:51

Wash immediately, put back on once dry, whole bed gets covered with a big quilted blanket my nana made for me to protect all bedding from dust. Bedding gets a shake out or air out in the sun right before new guests arrive & quilt cover is washed ready to go back on once they leave. It's how my nana always did it and I remember her spare bed always being lovely to sleep in so I just copy her

afrikat · 06/07/2023 14:17

Wash and replace straight away. I've never noticed any dust

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 06/07/2023 14:24

You have time between guests to have a problem? (lighthearted comment BTW).

We have adult DC, their partners and friends/colleagues staying so frequently that I often have to get them to strip the bed as soon as they get up so I can wash, dry and remake for that evening. I think our record is four changes in a week.

We live in a useful place for them and are happy to offer accommodation - and have trained them all to be excellent guests.

Grandana · 06/07/2023 15:19

It has never crossed my mind to make it up straight away. We wash the sheets the day they leave and then put a bedspread on. I'll only make up the bed when the next set of visitors is due. The bedspread gets stashed away for their visit. We have an airing cupboard and sheets feel cleaner straight out of it somehow.

Suboptimumumma · 06/07/2023 15:23

Third option but cover folded duvet and pillows with nice quilt that acts as a dust sheet. It’s easy to wash so not a problem.

BiddyPop · 06/07/2023 18:52

Wash immediately a guest leaves, put on fresh.

We used to have not very long gaps pre-Covid, and some let us know late afternoon while at work that they were en route.

Now, we've had 1 person in 3 years sleep over. But DH and I make use of it if needs be (we both snore on occasion and can both have patches of insomnia/too hot/too cold etc so bail out option is useful). We tend to wash them about monthly now and there may have been 4/5 patches of 2-5 hours occupation in that time between us, or occasional teen dd nesting after school with the dog.

I'm lazy. Wash immediately, put back on bed. Shake to refresh before next guest. Rarely long between the bastards.

This too Grin

Ibizafun · 06/07/2023 13:07

My cat likes to sleep on the bed so don't even bother washing till before next guest comes.

Same😂

rookiemere · 06/07/2023 20:03

I put it back on as soon as it's clean. DH sometimes snores so it's good to have a bolt hole.
I've recently bought one of those duvets that you just bung in the washing machine without needing a cover, so that speeds up change overs.

Oh lord, I can't imagine stripping and cleaning already clean bedding.

LacieLane · 06/07/2023 20:09

We have an assortment of DC’s and partners who stay fairly often but only for one night at a time.

Once they leave, I clip a peg onto the corner of the duvet, with their name on, so that I remember who has slept where and whether I need to change the bed or not. If the same DC is returning, after one night in a clean bed, I don't need to change it again.

shivawn · 06/07/2023 20:34

My husband or I often sleep in the spare room....we take turns having a lie in at the weekends so one of us will move to the spare room with the baby monitor after the early morning wakeup. So bed is always made up, just change the bedding if we have guests.

MysteryBelle · 06/07/2023 21:58

Wash and put back on. The problem is they don’t stay fresh like you say. Agree with pp who put bedspread over top, I do that too. To have them really fresh you kind of have to wash them again the day of, or day before, guests.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 06/07/2023 22:10

Wash and make up as soon as guests leave. Put a throw over it as the cat likes to creep in there.

GreenMini · 06/07/2023 22:13

Depends if the same person is likely to stay again before anyone else does.
But bedspreads are good news either way, to hide ugly bedding or protect from dust and pet hair.

Yellowdays · 07/07/2023 00:10

Parent used to make fresh bed immediately, then put a slightly big fitted sheet over the lot, tucking in the elastic edges.

Merrow · 07/07/2023 01:12

KohlaParasaurus · 06/07/2023 12:53

Remove, wash and replace straight away. The bedding getting dusty on the bed between guests has never been something I've even considered.

This

Wash within a week or two after they’ve left - when it’s a sunny day and I don’t have everyday stuff to wash etc.

Put it back on as soon as it’s dry.

I hate it when guests strip the bed. I’m not ready for it yet!

You leave used bedding to fester for weeks???

I have the bed stripped and washer going before the door has barely shut behind them.
