Vacuum storage bags that bloody work!

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/06/2023 12:33

After a very frustrating attempt at vacuum packing DS's baby clothes to store (as we are planning DC2 in the not too distant future), I have had it with vacuum bags that reinflate as soon as my back is turned (Dunelm, I'm looking at you).

I've tried filling ¾ or ½ full in case it was me overstuffing them, but it didn't seem to help & then I had lots of excess plastic bag taking up space which kind of defeats the purpose.

Can anyone recommend ones that stay airtight please?

If you're looking for vacuum storage bags that actually work, we have a guide to the best vacuum storage bags, tried and tested by MNHQ. Here's our best overall pick:

🥇SpaceSaver Vacuum Storage Bags, pack of 4, £14

However, if you’re short on time, here’s a summary of the vacuum storage bags Mumsnetters are recommending on this thread:

➡️ Lakeland Vacuum Clothes & Duvet Storage Jumbo Tote Bag, £23

➡️ Storage Master Space Saver Bags, pack of six, £12

The lakeland ones that vacuum into a storage bag are excellent. But seem to have really crept up in price, unless I'm misremembering what I paid before. I really do rate them tho. Stuff stated vacuumed no probs for several years

thenightsky · 07/06/2023 12:37

I've tried all makes, from very expensive Lakeland ones to cheap Home Bargains ones and they all let in air, some faster than others. I've given up with them now and just bundle stuff into Ikea boxes that slide under beds or sit on top of wardrobes.

Hazelnuttella · 07/06/2023 12:39

Lakeland ones that have the vacuum bag inside a zip bag. So even if the bag starts letting in air, its still restricted in size by the zip bag.

Weve just had this very conversation. What a waste of money and plastic. Ive come to the conclusion they can only work properly once after tha5 they become useless. Trying to use the ones with my Summer clothes for my Winter clothes, out of six different bags not one of them worked.

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/06/2023 13:04

The plastic waste from the useless bags makes me feel awful too 😞

The Lakeland ones look good but they are pricey! Do Lakeland have any regular sales/ discount codes? I've not ordered from them before.

For baby clothes I use these bags made from recycled plastic.
Not vacuum but I put them in the attic so the space isn’t such an issue. They wouldn’t fit under the bed.

I always have one on top of DS wardrobe and add to it until it’s full and then it goes in the attic.

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/06/2023 13:43

@Hazelnuttella they look good - are they quite sturdy? I got some big laundry bags for moving house once but the handles tore through the bag once full of clothes 😒

We normally buy our vacuum storage bags from Poundland. Pack of two for £1.50 or something. Never had an issue with the seal not working or them filling back up with air again.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 07/06/2023 13:51

Definitely Lakeland, they last for a few years with repeated unpacking and repacking. But they are pricey. Every now and then, there’s an offer where it’s buy one get one half price but generally no discount codes. Worth getting on the mailing list…

AwkwardPaws27 · 07/06/2023 14:26

@andymary thank you - I might take a punt on those then. I'd assumed they'd be worse than the Dunelm ones.

@WhoHidTheCoffee thanks!

They seem fine but I wouldn’t want to do much carrying with the handles once they’re full. Fine for just putting in the loft though.

I just saw IKEA do these now. Has anyone tried them? Reviews mixed but maybe better than Amazon?

Nubnut · 22/10/2023 20:30

Or maybe someone knows of an equivalent of the Lakeland ones on Amazon? I'm in Italy so can't get Lakeland.

JobMatch3000 · 25/10/2023 21:38

Argos.

TwigTheWonderKid · 25/10/2023 22:15

I've had success with these ones.

Knackeredandalsotired · 28/10/2023 22:27

I use the ikea ones for out of season duvets. So far no problems at all, and I have opened and reused a couple which still seem to stay vacuumed fine

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 28/10/2023 22:36

I recently got these ones from amazon, and they are proving excellent.
Vacuum Storage Bags 8 Bags - UOUNE 4 Jumbo + 2 Large + 2 Medium Reusable Compressed Storage Bags with Ziplock & Travel Pump for Duvets, Clothes, Quilts, Bedding, Pillows, Sweater, Comforters, Dresses https://amzn.eu/d/0zTQDwk

Nubnut · 30/10/2023 07:35

Those Amazon ones are the exact ones I got and they don’t work for me! Thanks though.
I’m going to try the ikea ones next.
i also think it’s better to use them for things you don’t take out all the time, like only once a year. I was using them to store guest bedding so once a month taking them out.

The ones I used 3/4 weeks ago are still very much vacuumed.

My tip would be to go over the seal a few times with your finger and thumb and really make sure there are no missed bits . Then vacuum away!

Quite agree! Have tried many and these are the best!
