Extra-large capacity washing machines... anyone got one?

Sorry for the boring.

I'm after some opinions/views on extra-large capacity washing machines (10kg, 12kg etc).

We have emperor-size bedding, and our current washing machine doesn't seem to like it. The duvet cover in particular gets all knotted up in itself during the wash cycle, and when it rinses it gets so heavy and sodden with water that it unbalances the machine and won't spin. I'm also not sure that it even cleans the bedding properly.

As it is I have to wash the duvet, the sheet/protector, and the pillowcases separately, meaning every time I change the bedding I have to do three washes. It takes all day and isn't very efficient.

Anyone gone for an extra-large capacity/large drum machine? Any other suggestions? We have a laundrette/dry cleaner at the end of the road but they'll charge me £25 each time just to do the duvet cover, which seems rather steep. Even a self-service laundrette round here is £18 a go for a big machine.

TIA.

We have a 10kg machine I can fit one king size bedding set and one towel or single bedding set but I don't do mattress protectors weekly. And extra spin cycle at the end. It's still 3 loads to do the whole house but I wouldn't be without it.

I do! I have a 10kg machine. It’s a Samsung and it’s very good. Has a setting called “eco bubble” which agitates the clothes for a full half an hour in suds, for extra cleaning with less water and power / spinning. Everything comes out very clean.

I had a Bosch serie 6 10kg before that but it broke down twice and I can’t afford that kind of unreliability with a big family. The first time it was in April 2020 and I couldn’t get a swap or repair (it was under warranty) so I had to wash my family’s clothes in the bath tub for about 8 weeks. I gave myself tennis elbow and bursitis in my knee 😅 But that’s another story.

Needless to say that my love affair with Bosch is over.

Anyway, the price of the Samsung is considerably less than that of the Bosch, and I actually prefer the performance of the Samsung. I did loads of research on it and it had great write ups. I can’t remember the model, but anything with eco bubble, I would recommend.

I have never heard of emperor size bedding. What capacity is the drum on your current machine? And, do you know how many bath towels it will take? Then I can give you a comparison. I’m putting on a load of towels today. 😂

Thanks both!

@PiriPiriChicken Emperor is the next size up from superking. Bed/sheets are usually 200x200 and duvets are 290x235. It’s fabulous — loads of room and really comfy. But the bedding is huge.

Current machine is a Whirlpool, capacity is 8kg I think (it says 8+6 on the front but it looks like a normal drum and it wasn’t expensive so I assume it’s an 8). It will take two bath sheet size towels at a push but again it gets stuck sometimes so I have to do one at a time (or bath sheet plus a couple of hand towels or flannels).

I have this 12kg Washer Dryer, which is fab.

Can wash my whole Superking Duvet Cover, Sheet, Pillowcases as one load although they dry better as two loads.

Do you button your Duvet Cover before putting it in the wash? I discovered years ago that that was the way to stop mine knotting in a smaller machine and now do it as a matter of course.

Swedish yeah I do button it — sometimes it helps but usually it makes no difference. The duvet cover seems to get part-filled with air sometimes; it swells up and fills the drum. That machine looks great, thank you.

I have a Hoover 10kg which can take a super king set with about 8 pillowcases. Easy. It also takes a superking duvet (by itself) but sometimes struggles to spin first time. It will take 3 bath sheets and 3 hand towels in one go.

RishMum · 12/05/2023 08:56

Got an 11kg Samsung few months ago and it has a 'Bedding' cycle so the spins alternate directions thus no balling up. No issues with a super king size duvet cover set and probably few extra pieces of clothing!

We have Bosch Serie6 10kg washer/dryer, excellent machine, would recommend. I can wash my super king duvet in it. The only thing you need to consider is the larger capacity washing machines are deeper that a regular machine, just incase (like us!) you realise you can’t open one of you kitchen cupboards doors!
