Can anyone recommend a good kitchen bin?

Hi all - I'm after a good quality mid-priced kitchen bin. I'm on my own so it doesn't need to be family sized, but maybe something with a recycling compartment as well. It's to go under a countertop, so would need to fit under that. Thank you in advance!

For a deeper dive into the world of waste disposal, don't miss our guide to the best kitchen bins according to Mumsnetters.

However, if you’re short on time, here’s a summary of the kitchen bins and brands Mumsnetters are recommending on this thread:

🗑 Brabantia Bo Touch Bin Hi - 2 x 30L Inner Buckets, £152

🗑 simplehuman CW1830 46L Rectangular Recycling Kitchen Pedal Bin, £135

🗑 SONGMICS Kitchen Bin 30L, £65

🗑 Joseph Joseph Totem Max 60 Litre Waste Separation and Recycling Kitchen Bin, £188

What makes a good kitchen bin?! Can’t believe you’ve posted asking this! A bin is a bin! Lol

I didn't think it was an unreasonable question! Just after a recommendation!

It’s not an unreasonable question at all ! We’ve just had a kitchen refit and no longer have room to hide it in a cupboard (the kitchens worth it though) so I wanted one that would look okay and not take up too much room in our narrow kitchen. After lots of research, we got a Songmics pedal kitchen bin and I love it! As it’s on display, it’s important it looks good as well as does the job.

You’ll need to start with measurements first, as I did, then go from there but I’d definitely recommend the Songmics brand for quality and looks

Thank you.

I hadn't heard of Songmics bins, so that's really helpful. They look lovely. That's the kind of thing I'm after.

I have a Joseph Joseph totem one, with two compartments. I like it and it looks pretty neat and unobtrusive

Witchpleas · 10/05/2023 11:04

I highly recommend Brabantia, they're expensive but made to last - so much so that the company will repair or replace any broken parts even after years of use. Lots of different options of colours and sizes.

I went for a swing top one from Amazon, which has been the best bin we've had. Big, easy to empty and clean, no buttons or pedals to break.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 10/05/2023 17:17

I like the simple human ones. Pricey but worth it. They last forever.

Or if you ever get a new kitchen get a built in one. It's one of the best things in our new kitchen!

I've got Simple Human kitchen bins

Despite being very budget conscious all my life, I spent a ridiculous amount of money on my kitchen bin. Most are so ugly, yet it's something we have to look at and use many, many times a day.

Brabantia is a wonderful company. I went for this, with its touch lid and its two inner buckets, and it gives me pleasure every day. Which sounds very sad, but I'm owning that feeling anyway! It's attractive, it's slender, and it works beautifully. It comes in various sizes. I have the 2x30l

It's available on Amazon for two thirds of the price on this link, btw

another vote for Brabantia!

Oblomov23 · 11/05/2023 06:03

Had brabantia for 25+ years. 2 the same, 1 for rubbish, 1 for recycling. Works really well.

gardendream · 11/05/2023 06:12

Brabantia bins are the best… I’ve never spent so much money on a bin in my life but they’re brilliant - right down to the holes in the inner bin that make pulling a full bin bag out a breeze

To be fair the last two bins I've bought, the lid mechanism has broken very quickly so I've been left with a bin with a permanently open lid. I've often wondered if I bought a more expensive one, would it be a bit more robust!

KPops22 · 11/05/2023 06:45

Brabantia for sure. We bought a brand new house and it is compulsory for them to include bins but they never fit them as most people remove as use up too much cupboard space and they are too small.

a1234567 · 11/05/2023 06:52

Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. Looks like I'll be spending a little more than I thought.. If they last though, I think that's ok.

I'd had the Brabantia bin before this one, for twelve years, when the catch on the lid broke. When I looked at buying spares for it (not from B) a new lid was £60! (It wasn't just the plastic bit, it also involved a lot of stainless steel). I called Brabantia to see if it was repairable, and they said they'd just send me a new one, despite me telling them how long I'd had it. And it arrived next day! Fantastic customer service.

When I decided I wanted a two section one, I was able to sell the other one for a good price, because even the base still looked like new.

Branbantia for me too

MadisonAvenue · 11/05/2023 07:05

I’m recommending Brabantia too, as well as all of the reasons already given it’s so easy to clean the inside of the lid and catch which is something I’ve never easily been able to do with cheaper bins.

DiscoBeat · 11/05/2023 07:08

I have a Simple Human touch bin - they do recycling ones as well. It's great, and the bin liners fit perfectly and tidily.

kitchenhelprequired · 11/05/2023 07:10

Think about what you need it to hold & in what proportions. I was happy with food waste in a caddy on the counter but needed general waste, paper & cardboard and plastics/glass/cans as per our councils waste set up. The plastics/glass/cans creates the most volume so I looked for something with the right proportions for the 3 waste types and with an internal tub to be able to carry out the non general waste to wheelie bins without the need for a bag. It took a fair bit of research to find what I was looking for and definitely cost more but I'm happy with what I bought and definitely don't just think a bin is just a bin.

Butterflybutterflies · 11/05/2023 07:26

I bought a brabantia bin in a moment of madness because I was sick of cheap bin catches breaking and not quite fitting into the space. It has two 30 litre compartments and it’s great, had it a few years now and still is a good as new.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 11/05/2023 07:33

We've go one of those battery operated lid bins. It's great as you don't get shit all over the place lifting lids with mucky hands
