Do you still have a landline?

Just that really? We do and I'm wondering why we do. Curious if others have got rid of theirs or not.

We do for emergencies. My 4 yo has been taught how to use it. And I'm forever losing my phone in the house and get anxiety at the idea of not being able to find it in an emergency. It co.es with our TV/Internet package so doesn't cost us extra.

Yes but no one under the age of 70 calls us on it.

Exactly this

Jackienory · 07/05/2023 10:15

Yes, for several reasons.

Somanycats · 07/05/2023 10:16

Yes absolutely. Those who don't, how do your younger children make social arrangements before they get a mobile? I don't want random kids calling my mobile because they want to talk to DS. Also I only ever employ a tradesmen, hairdresser etc with a landline.

Paperdolly · 07/05/2023 10:17

I’m a bit thick here. We have EE broadband, Tesco mobiles and BT landline. Could I get rid of my landline and still access broadband 🤷‍♀️?

AssertiveGertrude · 07/05/2023 10:18

We have a number and the line but never actually plugged the phone in

gogohmm · 07/05/2023 10:18

Technically yes, but no handset plugged in. Only used for broadband

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 07/05/2023 10:20

We haven't had a phone plugged into it for about 10 years because of the endless spam calls. 80 year old MIL is the only person I know still using hers.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/05/2023 10:20

Yes, we still have ours. My dad got rid of his and he's nearly 80!

Fandabedodgy · 07/05/2023 10:21

Yes but unplugged it several years ago. I don't even know the number.

We only have it cause it's part of our tv and broadband package.

bloodywhitecat · 07/05/2023 10:22

Yes because mobile reception is poor and 4G is patchy.

HappydaysArehere · 07/05/2023 10:22

we can’t hear the mobile in another room so sometimes we are called on the landline. It’s handy to call 150 if we have trouble with Virgin
wi fi. Also it’s just handy to have a stand by if the mobile goes missing.

Parisj · 07/05/2023 10:24

Ours doesn't actually ring or call, even when we replaced the handset, but like pp, we can't actually work out whether our broadband package would work without paying for it, and zero chance of getting any answer to that question by calling BT Broadband. Apathy wins.

You can get rid of the fixed line copper phone service and still get broadband

It's changed in the last year or 5 ( sorry I'm vague )

Oblomov23 · 07/05/2023 10:26

No. Not for years.

Snowdropsarelovely · 07/05/2023 10:26

Yes, mobile signal is too poor to reply on here

Yes because mobile reception is poor and 4G is patchy.

Your mobile should connect via WiFi for voice and data
Using WiFi where you can for data can enable you to buy a cheaper mobile package

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/05/2023 10:27

Yes as poor mobile signal.

For those who have mentioned WiFi calling, that might work most of the time but in power cuts the WiFi doesn't work so you end up with no telephone access at all. By retaining the landline we have phone access at all times.

midgemadgemodge · 07/05/2023 10:28

It's called "WiFi calling "

My mobile costs me £6 a month, I don't see how I could get it any cheaper?

midgemadgemodge · 07/05/2023 10:30

You can get battery add on to the home hub if you would need to have it work in a power cut

I suspect it's cheaper than a copper phone line

Willmafrockfit · 07/05/2023 10:30

yes
over 70s call
and if appointments are needed for gas check or whatever.
dh is home while i am at work, so he can receive any calls on landline

ItWasntMyFault · 07/05/2023 10:30

Yes because I have elderly parents who don't call mobiles due to the cost

1stWorldProblems · 07/05/2023 10:30

Yup - the grand parents use it. Plus it's more comfortable / reliable to use when making long phone calls to companies when you don't want to get cut off - 1 hour 50 mins to Co-op car insurance for instance.

Our main phone is a rotary with a proper bell for the sound mainly. But it also works in a powercut and the children enjoy testing their friends on how it works!
