How do you clean your dirty cloths?

asblackasyoursoul · 07/04/2023 01:57

This is what I do.
Each dirty cloth gets bunged into a basin in the cupboard. When it’s filled up, I fill the kitchen sink full of Zoflora in boiling water and leave them soaking there overnight.
Then, I wring them out and leave them hanging on the sides of the basin in the airing cupboard.

I did used to put them in the washing machine work the clothes on 90 degrees but I found that the clothes didn’t smell nice at all and I wondered if it was due to the cloths, hence removing them from washing with the clothes.

Is this odd? Really not sure what is the ‘correct’ way as I’m only 23 and only been living away from home for 2 years.

I put them in a bucket then wash on 60 once there are enough to warrant washing them

I would never add them to clothes or anything

I might add tea towels

HappiDaze · 07/04/2023 02:19

I wash on 60 in the washing machine

Nothing wrong with how you wash them

dementedpixie · 07/04/2023 08:33

I put them in the machine and wash with other clothes at 40⁰C. Never had an issue with smells

Beamur · 07/04/2023 08:38

I only use them for maybe a day then into the washing machine. So they only ever get superficially dirty and are washed frequently.
Your way sounds fine too - hot water and zoflora will freshen them up but I think I would either wash them maybe with some tea towels or similar every week to clean them more thoroughly.

Lifesyoungdream · 07/04/2023 08:53

I put them in the washing machine when ever I’m doing a wash.

CindersAgain · 07/04/2023 08:56

I just put them in the washing machine or the washing basket.

Sometimes too much soaking can be bad - the water goes brackish and smelly and bacteria starts to grow. I’d not leave them in water for too long. Or add a dot of detergent. That might be where your smell is coming from.

FusionChefGeoff · 07/04/2023 09:13

Wash with normal load.

Every now and then boil on stove for 10 mins

Flamingmentalcats · 07/04/2023 09:17

They just get thrown in the washing machine in our house with the normal wash. Life's too short for all that palavar!

7Worfs · 07/04/2023 09:20

Washed with the bathroom towels and tea towels at 70 degrees. I don’t let them get too manky/wet.

Suetcrust · 07/04/2023 09:20

Wash with a coloured load, not whites.
Wash in machine frequently enough and you won’t get “smells.”
After using cloths/flannels, until wash day, stretch them out to dry somewhere.
Sometimes I boil a cloth or two on the stove like my granny used to. Hang to dry in a ventilated/outdoor space.
I have lots of dish/floor cloths & flannels so I’m never without and can keep up with cleansing them.
Cut up and turn old towels into floor cloths etc.

WunWun · 07/04/2023 09:22

I wash cloths with towels at 60⁰

ExtremelyDetermined · 07/04/2023 09:24

Put in the washing machine and washed with the next load whatever it is (we run it most days). I wouldn't want a pile of damp ones hanging around and I don't think soaking in zoflora would actually clean them. Also I can't bear the smell of zoflora, but that's a matter of preference.

I leave mine in a bucket until I've got a few (yes they go dry and crispy). When I've got enough for a wash I soak them in bleach and hot water overnight, squeeze them out, then a hot wash in the machine with detergent but no softener. I usually use this opportunity to wipe round the washer door seals and clean out the detergent tray as well. Then afterwards, empty/drain the fluff filter on the washing machine. I just peg them out on the line or over the radiators to dry - I find leaving them to just air dry indoors makes them fusty.

My floorcloths, bathroom cloths, general manky stuff cloths are just old towels ripped up so I have an endless supply.

Slimjimtobe · 07/04/2023 15:29

I wash them on a quick wash at the end of the day (usually wait til I’ve a few)

Anjo2011 · 07/04/2023 19:21

I use a clean dishcloth, tea towel and hand towel every day in the kitchen, I then add them to a wash load of towels or bedding, whatever comes first.

Spinige · 08/04/2023 04:58

I have a dozen or so cloths and probably use about 3 a day for wiping surfaces etc. They rarely gey very gruby or greasy and just get thrown into the normal wash which goes on every day.

Using bleach and hot water won't be doing any good, you need to use cold water with bleach or it doesn't work

I sometimes soak mine in the sink with bleach otherwise in the washing machine with the next load and if possible dried outside on the line

Bleach and hot water is a myth . Works perfectly fine .

isthismylifenow · 08/04/2023 05:50

They go on the machine with towels.

I really don't think you need to wash anything at 90 degrees though.

longwayoff · 08/04/2023 06:57

Rinse them then give them 60 seconds in the microwave.

DatingDinosaur · 08/04/2023 08:21

@TimeForMeToF1y That’s a new one on me! In what way doesn’t it do any good?

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 10/04/2023 21:05

I don’t soak mine. They get chucked on the floor in the laundry room until I can put them
in a 60 degree wash, usually with towels. I don’t put them in with clothes.
