New Washing Machine - 8kg or 10kg

We are buying a new washing machine as ours is coming up to seven years old and is being rather temperamental. It's actually a washer dryer but we rarely use the dryer as we have a separate one which is far better and more energy efficient!

It's currently a 8kg machine which is fine most of the time - but sometimes a bigger drum could be handy. It's two adults, two young kids and pets in the house.

The machine I am looking at comes as either an 8kg or a 10kg but the depth and size remains the same which is handy as the one we have now sticks out whereas the new one would be flush to the counter.

The 8kg is either £429 or £549 (depending on model) or the 10kg is £549 or £629 (depending on model)

Is it worth spending the extra to get a 10kg drum or is an 8kg fine for a family of four considering it's what we have now?

Do you have drying capacity for 10kg of washing?

Craftyrose · 13/03/2023 09:38

I think if you can afford to go bigger then do that! Our machine always ends up getting stuffed full and it's a 9kg one. Towels and bedding are so heavy if there's a few so I think it's better to go for a bigger one if possible!

Dryer is 8kg but we never dry a full washing load as some of it can't be tumble dried anyway

We went from an 9Kg to a 10.5kg, would always say go bigger if you can as you have more scope to wash duvets, bedding and heavier items

bigger always better if you can!

How much drying space do you have? Not just tumble dryer but places in the house to dry things. We have 8kg and always think about a larger drum but if the weather is rubbish we don't have space to dry a larger load without washing being absolutely everywhere.

Is that 10kg on all programmes?

And if so, is it the programmes you need?

Igniteyourbones · 13/03/2023 10:44

I have a 12kg one. Family of 6. Best purchase I’ve ever made! Can do really big loads and also fits duvets/pillows in.

One model has 12 modes the other has 14 - and I can tell you I currently use the same mode on my machine for everything so it makes no difference to me Smile

I just got a new machine which is 10kg instead of 8kg. That paid no factor at all in my decision. But I do like the fact the drum is bigger. The clothes have more space for a good wash. I also think it's drying the clothes much quicker due to the extra air space.

Thanks all, went with the 10kg
