How do I get rid of an old piano.

It still plays well, but we don’t use it anymore. There are so many on gumtree that I don’t mind giving it away, but to who? Anyone managed to get rid of their 15 yr old upright? Thanks

Freecycle, buyer collects! There'll be a local group on Facebook

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 11/03/2023 20:30

Put a card in your local paper shop no window. There will be some kid having piano lessons who will love it .

Primary school? Our EYFS has one that was more or less fit for the skip in their outside area.

WinterMusings · 11/03/2023 20:34

We spoke to the guy who tuned ours & who we bought our new one off. He knew a family who would love one but couldn't afford one, ours was still good, but not really good enough for G8. He charged cost price for transport & we paid it.

shinynewapple22 · 11/03/2023 20:37

I sold my mum's old upright piano for around £30-£50 on gumtree (can't remember actual sum now). It took a long time to sell though because of the additional cost that buyers had in transporting it. Mum's was a lot older than 15 years and needed tuning . This was 2-3 years ago .

Ask your local primary school if anyone who is having piano lessons would like one. People often buy an entropic kne when starting out but they really font have the same sctoon or feel. Families often can't afford to get one.

Lilbunnyfufu · 11/03/2023 20:41

We put ours outside with a note saying free please take a few hours later I saw a couple and their young son wheeling it off down the road. The boy was excited to have his own piano

LakeTiticaca · 11/03/2023 20:54

Old folks home or a Sunday school?
Community Centre?
Someone will take it for sure 😉

willow236 · 11/03/2023 21:05

I would ask in local schools, local senior homes and donate it to them for free or very little charge- those places may have a good use of it but limited finance to actually purchase one.

rwalker · 11/03/2023 21:07

Why don’t you email local piano teachers chances are they might know someone who wants one

Tidypidy · 11/03/2023 21:12

Some charities take them to sell in their furniture shops.

You really put a full sized 350 kg piano outside your front door...and someone wheeled it along the pavement to their home 🙄

please be sensible.

Op state that you need collection only

catinboooots · 12/03/2023 05:11

My mum put mine out in the street (bitter Grin)

It was taken in minutes

Working in a primary school, we are often offered pianos by families who don’t want to store them any longer. Very few young teachers can even play piano, pianos require expensive tuning after being moved, and this isn’t the gift to a school that you think it is- it leaves us with another bulky useless object that we will need to use school funds to dispose of.

Yes we gave ours away on Gumtree. Two men came, got it out and took it off on a trailer. Apparently it was for the daughter of one of them. We had some interest from Freecycle and Freely Wheely but were either were too far away or hadn't thought about the actual process of collecting a hulking great heavy musical instrument.

AgentProvocateur · 12/03/2023 06:14

If you’re near a city, maybe offer it to the organisations that put pianos in public places.

JulietBrown · 12/03/2023 07:03

We have a piano that was offered for free from adult children doing house clearance after their mum died. It was advertised as a free piano, could only be collected on one date when they were clearing. We paid for transport which was expensive, I think almost £300. The transporters had a special ramp. It was going on the ground floor but we have four steps up to our house and they were basically saying they would dump it outside the house, their house ramp couldn’t do the stairs. I’d sent photos of the stairs to the booking person for the piano transport, so a bit of a nightmare. Anyway, the two transporters, me and a neighbour pushed the piano into the back garden around the house and in through the back door. Took almost 2 hours to get it in the house. I think the moving part is why pianos are so hard to pass on. Very envious of people who can wheel them down the road. This was a piano from 1950s. Maybe newer ones are lighter, this was the most heavy, unwieldy thing. But we love it.

On Facebook marketplace. Buyer to collect.
You could ask for money, as it's in good condition, but no need.

TheAdmiralAndFishermanFavorEntirelyDifferentPies · 12/03/2023 12:22

We couldn't get anyone to take ours for free, so spent a lovely day with virtually every screwdriver, spanner and socket - with the occasional whack with a mallet - to dismantle it following a YouTube tutorial. Then someone happily took the metal harp.

TheClash2023 · 12/03/2023 12:34

We sold mum's on eBay for £50. They are hard to sell or even give away. A man who restores came to collect it

ifIwerenotanandroid · 12/03/2023 12:36

I paid the council £25 to take it away.

SedentaryCat · 12/03/2023 12:47

MIL left us her upright piano in her will and sadly we have no space (or anyone who plays). So we advertised it free to a good home. Someone came with a trailer and 4 friends, loaded it up and took it away. It needed some minor work and tuning but it was a good solid piano. It was destined for his 10 year old daughter who needed her own piano.

GiantKitten · 12/03/2023 12:51

There’s a huge YMCA furniture shop here and I was surprised to see them showing a piano for sale on their FB page the other day.
They can be hard to get rid of, and are extremely tricky to move, so if you have no
luck on local FB/free cycle pages and there’s similar near you it might be worth offering it to them.

Grantanow · 12/03/2023 12:51

We gave ours to a local charity furniture shop. They sell furniture to support their charitable work. They collected it.
