How many glasses do you have?

Orcubed · 28/01/2023 08:33

Watched the Nick Knowles programme. They had 544 glasses. We have a LOT of glasses (but not that many!)
Everyday glasses (pint and small)
wine (red and white, big and small) champagne, beer, gin, cocktail, brandy, sherry glasses…
I do really like having the ‘right’ glass 😳

A lot. But we have 2 homes. We also drink a lot of wine. We have Reidel variety specific glasses, 12 each of about 6 different types. Plus cheaper champagne glasses for parties, probably 50 of them. We also like Belgian beer so have the matching glasses for our favourite beers. Then there are cocktail glasses (eg martini and margarita glasses etc), and crystal whiskey glasses. Vintage etched glass champagne saucers because I like them. A dozen Reidel G & T glasses. Plus tumblers and water glasses. A couple of boxes of ISO wine tasting glasses.

I can’t get over how many some of you have? Seriously, what home needs 30 plus glasses. Don’t you wash the dishes daily?
Does it perhaps depend on how long the person has lived away from their original family home though? I find some things just build up over the years, and we got a fair few presents of tumblers (all broken now weirdly!). They probably don’t use them all. I find the towel thread madder, we definitely don’t have enough towels here, I’d love an endless supply of them or tea towels!!!

I’ve always quite enjoyed having the ‘right’ glass for a drink - at least to an extent (you can definitely take it to extremes!).

If you like cocktails for example you can always make do with a rocks glass/tumbler, but if you also have a highball, a cocktail glass and a champagne flute (to cover most types) then I think it adds to the enjoyment - we eat and drink with our eyes first so how a drink is served makes a difference.

I have loads but feeling jealous of the green tumblers above and the Edinburgh crystal. And the 50s cocktail glasses.

I have assorted tumblers, second hand, including some from the 2012 Olympics, and Ikea. I use the Ikea ones by preference. Preferably the ones with punk flamimgoes on. Pint glasses and small beer glasses - lots. Alsacian green wine glasses, quite a few, large and small. One vintage pink tumbler. Two sets of cocktail glasses which I never use. Some champagne glasses. Some Mexican cocktail/champagne glasses, I am not sure. Some Bristol Blue wine glasses. A Nutella glass and some kids glasses which were French mustard jars. Some European shot glasses.

I would love a nice neat glass cupboard but am quite attached to my random assortment.

Pink flamingoes, not punk flamingoes!

ArtVandalay · 31/01/2023 10:01

As soon as they get a bloom on them from the dishwasher, they’re out. Still have too many though.

DorritLittle · 31/01/2023 10:01

Oh and I also have some of those old fashioned pint and half pint glasses that you used to get in pubs with a handle.

I don't even drink beer.

DorritLittle · 31/01/2023 10:03

And I had some gorgeous vintage sherry glasses, but all but one has now broken 🙁

Bagatella · 31/01/2023 10:05

Too many - and seemingly never enough- impossible to find matching sets, despite always buying them in 6's. Either we break them or it's a poltergeist...

SquigglePigs · 31/01/2023 10:08

Everyday pint glasses (9), nice pint glasses (4), nice half-pint ish glasses (3), fruit juice/g&t glasses (7), wine glasses (10), champagne flutes (7), shot glasses (eclectic selection of about 6 collected over the years), plus a few random ones kept from older family members.

So I think that's about 50. The odd numbers come from having broken the odd one from a set or pair. More than I'd have thought if I'd just been asked to guess!!

We also have two pottery red wine goblets and two pewter champagne flutes so not technically glasses but used for the same purpose.

I think there are a few factors for us

  1. Drinking a wide variety of drinks and liking the ‘right’ glass. If you’re someone who only drinks white wine you would only need white wine glasses. I like red and white wine, champagne, gin, sometimes a beer, sometimes a cocktail. I don’t drink very much so when I do I like it to be enjoyable and as @Pandor says the right glass is part of that. I have friends who only own 2 wine glasses and make their guests drink out of plastic cups, I take my own glass when I go there because drinking wine out of a plastic cup ruins the experience for me!
  2. having a lot of children means more tumblers needed and more potential for breakages
  3. having merged two houses when dp and I moved in together
  4. having inherited some beautiful vintage glasses
  5. previous owners of the house having left around 50 glasses in the bar area (we didn’t keep them all but some were too nice to get rid of)
  6. Having a large extended family that we like to host. Obviously we don’t use all of our glasses at once but on Christmas Day for example we did use all 24 champagne glasses at once, as well as all or most of various different types.

I also forgot to mention that two of the glasses belong to the cat 😂. She likes to drink her water out of a glass rather than a dish!

Vinorosso74 · 31/01/2023 12:02

Too many for what space we have! I reckon about 30-40 assortment of tumblers, pint glass, wine, champagne, shot, cocktail and some weird shaped beer ones. I am on a decluttering thread and haven't owned up to all of these.

Orcubed · 31/01/2023 12:21

@Vinorosso74 im also on a decluttering thread and have been doing a steady declutter for the past couple of years. I’ve concluded that I can get rid of most things but not crockery or glasses! Maybe once the kids have left home then I can have only the beautiful ones and get rid of the purely functional!

DorritLittle · 31/01/2023 12:48

I also can't get rid of glasses or crockery. Even when crockery breaks I get the superglue out and try and make a plant stand or toothbrush mug put of it...

It is also why I should never take up pottery.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/01/2023 12:56

DH has 17 whisky glasses.
I think that might be slightly excessive...

Pandor · 31/01/2023 13:54

That pineapple glass would be great for Tiki cocktails (although I see they do also sell a Tiki glass which looks pretty good!).

I’ve not got into Tiki glassware - that is a rabbit hole I need to steer well clear of!
