What does a deep clean mean to you?

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 21/12/2022 21:07

I read so many threads where posters discuss their weekly 'deep clean'. This puzzles me but maybe I have the wrong idea.

For me a deep clean is take the curtains/blinds down and wash them, dry, iron, dust and then wipe down the walls with a damp cloth, skirting boards, coving etc, clean lampshades, lightbulbs, dust everything, vacuum everything including the crack between the walls and the carpet, move all furniture, wash cushion covers etc, clean windows inside and out. Kitchen would include cleaning the oven, caustic soda down the drains, washing machine and tumble drier and the equivalent in the bathroom.

This isn't something I'd do every week. So I've got the wrong idea.

Can someone educate me?

I agree with you. Plus only do a deep clean in the spring!

BCBird · 21/12/2022 21:10

Deep clean = back ache🤣

topcat2014 · 21/12/2022 21:11

Apart from taking down my blinds and curtains , I do all of this at least monthly

Slimjimtobe · 21/12/2022 21:14

I deep clean but never take down the curtains ;just wipe the Curtain pole and hoover with the soft brush attachment

so for me it’s wiping skirtings, thorough clean of kitchen cabinets in and out. wiping internal doors. Pulling out sofas (though I do this regularly as we eat in an open plan area and have a stove)

pelargoniums · 21/12/2022 21:16

It’s the chapter in one of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books where Ma and Pa are away – possibly visiting Mary? – and Laura sets about cleaning the house and they refill the straw mattresses, cover the stove with blacking and generally make a big sweaty mess.

BCBird · 21/12/2022 21:17
  1. No intention of doing it. Possibly if I decide to move? House tidy, bit of dust doesn't bother me🤣
Rainsdropskeepfalling · 21/12/2022 21:18

I last took everything out of all the kitchen cabinets when I moved house... I probably need to up my game.

If I can't see the dirt, I'm not going to worry!

Wow. I have never done most of those things. Dusting is deep cleaning to me!

Lividity · 21/12/2022 21:19

People wash their walls?

Like, seriously? The walls?

SignOnTheWindow · 21/12/2022 21:20

@kitcat15 I keep promising that one day I will get my shit together and be someone like you. Does this come naturally to you, or do you follow a method (e.g. the Organised Mum Method).

Divebar2021 · 21/12/2022 21:21

If you’re doing all that monthly I would suggest a hobby possibly?

I manage holiday lets and the above is pretty much what we do as a deep clean once every quarter or so (depending on use obviously). Some things on your list are done between guests if needed.

I don’t know why anyone would do all that on a weekly basis in a normal family house unless they literally had nothing better to do, an obsession with cleaning or a really, really dirty family. But this is MN, where competitive cleanliness matters. Start a thread asking how often you wash sheets or towels and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s more of a daily bleach and boiling water disinfectant scrub than a wash imo – there’s usually time to kill between the first hot towel wash of the day and the second, then you can squeeze in hoovering the ceiling before the second wall wash if you get your timings right.

Do you not find that boiling the walls in bleach isn't quite enough? Try caustic soda or boiling nitric acid for that extra deep clean for the day after polishing the light bulbs and descaling the carpets. Doing less is just plain lazy imo.

StClare101 · 21/12/2022 21:45

I try to do a task every weekend from the deep clean list as a bit of a rotation. Last weekend I emptied out the fridge and freezer and cleaned every shelf, crisper etc. Apart from spills that’s a task I only do every 2-3 months. A couple of weeks ago I wiped down every skirting board in the house etc.

StClare101 · 21/12/2022 21:47

I have been known to clean walls in heavy traffic areas. Both our kids have a habit of trailing finger tips along walls despite my ranting. As soon as they are old enough I’ll give them that job which will probably fix the problem immediately.

silentpool · 21/12/2022 21:54

I don't know where people find the energy to be honest. I just try and chip away at the various jobs here and there - certainly not on any regular schedule.

I do since I have a toddler. It's almost unbelievable how quickly she can make a mess of anything. There's actual tomato on my ceiling in the dining room. The walls need washing.

Nanalisa60 · 21/12/2022 22:18

Deep clean is not a once a week thing, once or twice a year with me, November and May . Clean ovens and all kitchen units inside and out defrost and deep clean fridge freezer, clean all the blinds and clean windows inside and out, move all furniture and hoover under clean under them including the beds. Empty all wardrobes and draws have a clear out and but back all net and tidy. Wash all cushion covers and throws, wash all woodwork and doors, clean all the rugs, once a year get carpets professionally cleaned. Rest of the year just maintain. Last week in November is the biggest clean of the year then I can enjoy Christmas and new year. Also big clean in May means I can enjoy the good weather all summer.

I am a person that has to have a organised home or I get anxiety.

blueshoes · 21/12/2022 22:30

I must have wandered into a parallel universe. Don't mind me. Do crack on.

LuluBlakey1 · 21/12/2022 22:32

Deep clean - hoover and dust

Theheartsinvisiblefuries · 21/12/2022 22:45

Bloody hell! I need a lie down just reading these cleaning schedules.

I don't do any of these things and the world hasn't stopped turning. Haven't people got anything more interesting to do?

DrSmoot · 21/12/2022 22:47

I’ve never dusted a lightbulb!

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 21/12/2022 22:50

Ok

I feel better now. I don't do any of this stuff monthly, or even yearly. But feels like I have got the concept of a deep clean right.

I just don't understand how I'd have the time (or inclination) to deep clean the house once a month ... I too live on a different planet to some I think ..

I'm not calling vacuuming deep cleaning ☺️

I like the idea but until I retire and find the time, I think it's not going to happen.
