Cooking smells

Our house really seems to hold on to cooking smells, especially now that it's too cold to have windows open. Any top tips for neutralising them on an ongoing basis?

Burn a candle while cooking and a little while after

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 09:46

We have candles burning but they don't seem to mask it. Our whole house smells of Fajitas from last night's dinner 🙄

Have you got an extractor?
I still open the door but for a shorter time. Especially when cooking is well underway and if I open the oven door to get stuff out.

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 10:19

Our extractor fan is useless. Maybe I'll have to face having the door open. Although very reluctant to let all of the heat out of the house.

Do you maintain the extractor hood? Washing the inside/ changing pads etc?

brownbeauty80 · 02/12/2022 10:40

I burn cooking candles when cooking and for an hour after

Tannedandfake · 02/12/2022 10:44

It may be that your soft furnishings are holding the smell. I use febreeze on my couches and curtains

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 10:45

@Snugglemonkey our extractor fan is pretty new. We had a kitchen refit last year. However, doesn't seem to do anything! Think it's a cheap and cheerful number put in by the kitchen fitters.

I know Everytime I pan fry steak,I have to wash the extractor filters and wipe down the hob for grease splatter.

I used to have an oven whose door seal was old, it was much better after it was replaced.

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 11:17

Everything is wiped down externally and kitchen cleaned immediately after meals. Maybe I need to investigate how to clean the filters etc. However it seems to be airborne smells. The whole of the downstairs smells of whatever we have been cooking.

I have this issue :-(
The kitchen door is closed so smells can't fill the house thankfully
I open windows and the patio door for a little bit
Always keep the trickle vents open to allow airflow
Run the extractor on it's highest while cooking
Run an air purifier, 2 if cooking curry, leave them on overnight again with the kitchen door shut
Febreze the blinds etc in that room on a regular basis using the anti bac version.

I've heard steaming can remove odours from curtains etc so i need to try that.

ichundich · 02/12/2022 11:24

No advice; I have the same issue and I think it's worse when the house is colder for some reason. I open two windows at opposite ends of the kitchen and put the extractor fan one whilst cooking.

torquewench · 02/12/2022 11:39

Chop an onion in half and leave it out overnight. It'll absorb the smells.

ThistlesandHarebells · 02/12/2022 12:08

Cheap and cheerful solution. Half fill an old jar with vinegar. Have this open near your hob while cooking and for a while afterwards. Put lid on jar and store in under sink cupboard til next needed. Obviously necessary to change the vinegar every so often. Works for all cooking smells, also paint smells when decorating.

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 12:13

@ThistlesandHarebells white vinegar? Or would it work with malt?

Baking soda in a cup with some hot water, leave it on worktops.
You can make serveral cups to speed up the process. Works like a charm!

It might be worth checking out the pad and seeing is it a thin one. We replaced ours and it did a much better job. The last one was rubbish!

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 13:17

Thank you @Snugglemonkey will have a look

The filters on our extractor fan can be taken out and put in the dishwasher. We do that around once a month. Possibly we should do it more often but it does quite a good job,

BrightRedLipstick · 02/12/2022 14:16

Is your extractor fan a recirculating one OP?
Ours is recirculating and is pretty useless despite regular changing of filers.
I believe the best option is a ducted extractor with a vent straight out.
Sadly not an option in our current kitchen layout

Yep this.

Great tips on being at and baking soda though - thank you for those!

Keep the kitchen door to the other rooms closed. Cooking will generate heat anyway so if you're strict then you won't lose that much heat.

Lkydfju · 02/12/2022 14:26

We close the kitchen door and open windows in there which prevents the smell going everywhere

newme4lanzarote23 · 02/12/2022 14:27

@BrightRedLipstick yes ours is the same. It just seems to circulate the smells around!
