Cooking smells

Our house really seems to hold on to cooking smells, especially now that it's too cold to have windows open. Any top tips for neutralising them on an ongoing basis?

I always open the window.

@newme4lanzarote23 If you have a recirculation-only hood, it should probably have some carbon filters in it, which need to be replaced on occassion. Look at the manual - if it's supposed to have them, check they are actually there (often aren't put in), and if it does have them, replace them.

@newme4lanzarote23 Either white or malt -both work wonders. If I’ve been cooking curry or fish I sometimes just leave the jar open all night..

Clean the extractor filters often. Put the extractor on as soon as you start cooking. Close the door into the house but open an outside door or a window if it gets steamy, smoky or oily. Hot oil is the worst! Burn fresh candles like Cooks Candles or ones scented with mint and thyme.

Also mop the floors, wash fabrics like sofa covers and curtains and wipe all surfaces with a fresh scented cleaning product.

I find the smells of fresh coffee and fresh laundry usually managed to mask cooking smells after a short while.

A good trick is to rub some fabric conditioner onto the radiators. Doesn;t work so well during austerity when they don't come on as often, though!

If I'm frying anything (especially fish) I put the (still hot) pan outside the backdoor immediately I've dished up and get it in once it's cold. That seems to make a big difference.

I use a cook’s candle afterwards. Works well.
