Corner sofas - are they naff? I think we might have to have to get one...

Our sofas are really knackered and need replacing, and as we've never been able to arrange the room to our liking we think a corner sofa might solve the problem. But some of the ones I've seen are hideous beyond words, and I want the room a classy room. Can they be chic?

Swedes - it's very pretty and almost identical to things I already own . My TV lives on a piece on a piece of furniture of that ilk and said piece of furniture is getting ruined, fast.

Hence requirement for technology and relatively child friendly furniture. Most of it is gross beyond belief... hence the difficulty.

As for coffee table - not particularly enamoured of them either, I just need to find something to put my glass of wine on that isn't the floor. Could be a side table (but I think they are naffer than coffee tables even).

What dilemmas, hey?

A cat-repellant sofa, Brangelina? Gosh, my decorating dilemmas pale in comparison

Lighting - every room in this apartment has a central ceiling light [groan emoticon]. We have dealt with some, quite satisfactorily, and have just decided to abandon a couple (sitting room, our bedroom) which requires me to go to Monsieur Bricolage and buy a polystyrene thing to stick over the wires coming out of the ceiling and blob some white emulsion on it.

I still need a hall light though. And some floor lamps.

we have a lovely coffee table - made of clear acrylic with a glass top. it's very non-distracting (unless covered in piles of books and newspapers) but a good resting place for a glass.

MrsWobble - glass scares me. All those toddler finger marks

We have two floor lamps in the sitting part of the room, one of which needs replacing. I'd love a big articulated one but all the ones I like are too many ??. There is a overhead over the dining table but it's awfully dazzling and I hate it. No wall brackets (unless we fit them).

I need a toddler-repellant sofa. He's just learnt to climb onto them and now hangs precariously over the back, daring me to get to him before he dives

i see your point - mine are older now so not the same problem.

I meant too many euros, but the symbol morphed...

I have a Tolomeo Mega with the Pergamena lampshade from Artemide over my sofa - I think it was about 700 euros - and a Tolomeo Sospensione over my Ethnicraft table. They're good, very neutral and light well.

I put in a small transparent Kartell wall bracket in the corridor and am thinking of having two of them instead of wires out of the wall behind the table (well, in fact, I am going to have them - my partner just doesn't know that yet ). The Kartell stuff really isn't too expensive. We also have two transparent Kartell lampshades hanging from the ceiling in the corridor, where we need a lot of light (no windows).

Ridiculously oversized sofas crammed into small sitting rooms look naff.

Blimey Anna, you do like your Italian design. A friend of mine used to design for Artemide (and, incidentally, Rubelli) and still gets a hefty discount, but alas the ones we liked either didn't "fit" our flat or were still too expensive even after the discount. I do have a 60s original Boalum, though, which I love. I was really after the Galileo which he designed for Lumina but alas there was no discount to be had on that and I needed 4 for my kitchen.

Oh dear, don't I sound a ponce, but then that's what happens when you live in the style capital of the world.
