Corner sofas - are they naff? I think we might have to have to get one...

Our sofas are really knackered and need replacing, and as we've never been able to arrange the room to our liking we think a corner sofa might solve the problem. But some of the ones I've seen are hideous beyond words, and I want the room a classy room. Can they be chic?

Castille - personally, I would never buy a corner sofa .

However, if you think you have to have one, you must ensure it's a very expensive modern well designed one - or, yes, it will be super-naff.

We have bought loads of furniture in the past year - if you want addresses to look at in Paris give me a shout.

niceglasses · 31/01/2008 09:12

Got one here. Don't think its naff, but am a bit behind on what is naff. Very comfy - far too easy to fall asleep on.

My SIL has one - bought it from the previous owners of the house, as it seemed to fit the room.

A word of warning - a corner sofa seems to over-excite small children, who mistake it for a giant trampoline, castle (with cushions pulled off), train, whatever.

Personally I think they're best left in the DFS showroom

castille · 31/01/2008 11:22

Room is biggish - 6.5 x 5.5m, multi-functional living-dining room with lots of doors and windows so it needs to be "zoned" to make it feel more intimate and cosy. I vaguely thought a corner sofa might solve the problem, but something is stopping me from choosing one...

Anna - addresses would be great, but I doubt my budget is comparable to yours

castille - we've just ordered a (second) sofa from - here

Swedes · 31/01/2008 11:50

Anna888 _ They look nice - which one did you go for and in what fabric?

Anna8888 · 31/01/2008 11:55

Swedes - it's just a little one for watching TV/DVD (banished to a corner in our household ) - Judd in the Label Collection - in scarlet velvet (our main sofa - which is in another room - is in dark grey velvet and I just love the feeling of a velvet sofa).

Anna8888 · 31/01/2008 12:01

Actually, our other big sofa is pretty much like the one called Baltimore from Marie's Corner - in dark grey velvet loose covers (I have two sets in case of accidents ).

noddyholder · 31/01/2008 12:17

We had one a few years ago It was really comfy and quite stylish in dark grey tweed and was great for films etc. When we moved I sold it as I had always had a feeling it was a bit naff but the girl we sold it to had a warehouse appartnment and when she sold recently \I saw a picture of it on the internet in her room and it looked fab.Wish I'd kept it now

Anna8888 - Lovely. I love velvet too. I am looking for a new sofa for our snug. It is a very dull room with a small plain fireplace and an oak floor and a mahogany chest on chest. At the moment the room is painted cream and it's so lifeless. I am quite tempted towards a GP & J Baker linen covered sofa I really like this print A friend of mine has a patchwork sofa from this place www.squintlimited.com it is totally gorgeous and looks lovely in her house but I think I would tire of it. I am not a leather sofa kind of person.

noddyholder · 31/01/2008 12:31

that print is stunning swedes.Lve big scrolly prints adn esp birds

Anna8888 · 31/01/2008 12:38

I like really bold floral type fabrics, too - I have two bergère armchairs upholstered in a woven floral Rubelli fabric (cream silk background - bought pre-children...) in the sitting room with the grey sofa.

I think it's incredibly difficult to have opinions/give advice on decorating without visual knowledge of the architecture of a house and the other furniture.

Agree on leather - not for me. Especially since here we have parquet and lots of mouldings on the walls - we need softness in the upholstery to make it comfortable.

3andnomore · 31/01/2008 12:45

swedes...are you joking about that print?

Anywya, why would a corner soa be naff....and why would you need a big room for it...indeed, they are far better for a smaller room then seperate sofas, as they are space saving...
I suppose any kind of sofa could be naff or not naff, depends on the style, surely...and must say, they I , personally, would class that printed one swedes linked, too, as naff...but then, I am the first one to admit I have no taste, lol...

Swedes · 31/01/2008 12:50

I'm deadly serious about that print. {grin]

3andnomore · 31/01/2008 12:51

gulp

Swedes · 31/01/2008 12:59

I have 2 bergere armchairs and a bergere sofa in my big sitting room.

Lucy10 · 31/01/2008 13:02

Our living room isn't too big but we got a great corner sofa from the sofa workshop. It is very comfortable!

Anna8888 · 31/01/2008 13:03

I am looking for:

  • a very small desk (for a computer) that is going to go in one corner of the sitting room
  • a TV table/stand (so I can send the very good Georgian magogany tea table it is currently inhabiting to be re-polished and restored to its natural habitat of the hall)
  • a coffee table
  • lighting

ALL these things I find incredibly hard...

castille · 31/01/2008 14:06

If you find the small sitting room computer desk, Anna, do tell, because we need one too

In fact we need not just sofas and a desk but everything for this room - new decor, new curtains, new dining furniture, TV/media stand, storage... and a creative eye for how to arrange it all

We bought a great table, bench, chairs and bookcase from here. Very functional - you can eat around the table or use it as a sort of library/games/computer/drawing etc table. We have a Tolomeo suspension overhead so the lighting is really good for homework etc.

castille · 31/01/2008 14:26

What gorgeous stuff!

Ah yes, lighting. We need that too.

OP posts:
Anna8888 · 31/01/2008 14:36

It wasn't expensive .

Lighting is such a nightmare - I have been to a zillion lighting shops... and some of it is unbelievably expensive. What do you have - overhead, wall brackets or plug-in lamps?

Brangelina · 31/01/2008 15:19

Corner sofas are lovely. Most of the Italian designers do a corner sofa, or else modular with chaise longue attachments. Agree you'd probably have to go for something expensive, a lot of the UK furniture warehouse type things tend to have at least one detail that makes them naff. We're specifically looking for a corner sofa as we've got open plan and would like something to de-limit (can you say that in English?) the room. Unfortunately we're trying to find one in a material that is not cat friendly which is why we haven't bought one yet.

Swedes · 31/01/2008 15:23

Anna888 What about this as a small desk? I love the simplicity of English Georgian furniture (Continental pieces are somehow less graceful).

Coffee table and tv tables are naff ditto computer desks.

What sort of lighting are you looking for?
