Washing taking ages to dry outside

I am trying to dry my clothes outside as much as possible. Today was a lovely day in London so I hung it out outside. It was outside for about six hours and then I took it in when it got dark. But despite the lovely day it was still very damp. Maybe because there wasn’t much wind today. But very disappointing to have it back inside with the dehumidifier on!

I'm further up North and mine didn't completely dry either!

Comedycook · 12/11/2022 19:47

Yes I've given up drying outside sadly. My garden is north facing and we get zero sun this time of year. I think it would dry more if we were South facing

Cynderella · 12/11/2022 22:42

This is the first week I've not been able to get washing dry outside. This time last year, I'd have been using the tumble dryer without a second thought. So far, dehumidifier is proving to be enough with just a an hour of heating on rainy days. In the past, I have managed without a tumble dryer - I need to upskill.

The air starts to get damper with before it’s dark, as the temperature drops, so you need to bring it in well before sunset. Mostly it will still need to finish drying indoors but should be much less wet than hanging in the house fully.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/11/2022 22:49

Next time bring it in at least an hour before dusk.

Put an extra spin on after the load is finished, or separate out the lighter items (underwear/t-shirts) and just extra spin for the heavier things like jeans and hoodies. You'll find they dry so much quicker!

Get it outside to dry early in the morning around 8am and anything that usually lives on a hanger can just go on the line on it's hanger; if it's trousers you need to use a clippy trouser hanger rather than the ones where you fold it over (or just peg on the line). When it gets dark, just bring the hangers in and hook them over the edge of the airer or over a door for the night. Saves moving clothes multiple times to then hang them up.

I struggled to get washing dry outside today although the last couple of days have been fine. Think there was less wind today. (Am in Midlands)

TwoBlueFish · 12/11/2022 22:57

I’ve left mine out, supposed to be dry again tomorrow where I am.

unknown10 · 12/11/2022 23:19

When I brought mine in today I was surprised at how damp it still was too

treadcarefully · 12/11/2022 23:39

Same here ( West Midlands)
Very disappointed today. Beautiful sunny and warm(ish) day. Hung it outside at 9am got it in at 4.30 and still very damp.
Might as well have used airer in first place. Think that's me finished with hanging out washing this year!

SamBeckettslastleap · 12/11/2022 23:41

Had the pavement dried?

Notcontent · 13/11/2022 00:30

Interesting. Maybe it was quite a humid day. I am going to try again tomorrow as have some sheets to wash! Will hang out earlier and bring them inside earlier.

It's been humid all week. My house isn't damp or cold and humidity is 66% here. I have a thermometer which includes that measurement. Keep trying-there are lots of long dry patches in the winter.

user16480478 · 13/11/2022 07:35

Yes, I noticed this the last 2 days but it still got a lot of the wet off so it was only damp on the airer not wet so still probably worth it

Athenen0ctua · 13/11/2022 07:37

I get it out by 8 at the latest then bring in to finish inside. Only washing Friday to Sunday now as it's dark so early.

Athenen0ctua · 13/11/2022 07:39

My sheets were dry by bedtime yesterday to put back on the bed, wouldn't have dried as quick inside without heating so still worth it.

RampantIvy · 13/11/2022 07:39

Mine was still a little damp, but it smells amazing after being outside all day. Today is damp and misty.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/11/2022 07:43

Bring them in by 3pm. They will only get damper after that.

Numbat2022 · 13/11/2022 07:48

The air is far more damp in winter so washing often won't dry. My garden is very shady and I don't bother hanging out October-March unless it's breezy and dry. We have a mild, damp climate, it might be warm at the moment but the air is not like summer air (hence the thick fog last night).

PutYourShoesOnWereLate · 13/11/2022 07:49

My sheets dried fairly quickly mid week and I was very disappointed that yesterday's washing didn't seem any drier coming off the line than it had gone on.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 13/11/2022 07:53

I'm in London too and despite the dry weather over the last couple of days it's still pretty damp everywhere from all that crazy rain last week.

I hang my washing out for as long as possible and at the end of the day give it a quick tumble to finish it off. It's better than going straight into the dryer.

Caspianberg · 13/11/2022 08:05

I think it’s still worth it. I hung ours outside yesterday on airer about 9am. Brought in about 4pm ( on airer so just lift whole thing easily). It was probably 80-90% dry. So just needed the evening indoors to finish.

I don’t think it would have dried any quicker if just inside, and the majority of the moisture went outside to help prevent damp. No musty drying smell indoors

Minniem2020 · 13/11/2022 08:07

At this time of the year I bring mine in by 3pm. Even if it still feels really damp I find that it being outside really helps and it'll dry on the airer overnight whereas straight on the airer from the machine would take days.

Passthecake30 · 13/11/2022 08:15

Mine too, but it definitely got about half of the wet off. Soon I won’t bother with the washing line, I’ll just put the airer on the patio if it’s sunny/dry and rotate on that and then finish it off inside, as I felt like I was hanging the washing up twice in one day (garden and airer)

Orangesare · 13/11/2022 08:16

Extra spin and bring it in by 3pm at the latest otherwise it’s gets damp again.
It makes a huge difference if you have a garden that is open and breezy. Sheltered gardens are no good for drying washing at this time of year.
