How much to spend on knives?

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 31/10/2022 18:15

I need a get a new set of kitchen knives and totally bamboozled by the choice.

Not big on cooking, nothing fancy, just normal household cooking.

How much should I spend to get a nice set, that will last? And does anyone have any recommendations?

A decent set will last a lifetime. You’re better getting two or three better knives than a full set of lower quality ones.

PickAChew · 31/10/2022 18:17

Victorinox. Inexpensive and easy to keep sharp.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 31/10/2022 18:38

How much is a decent set? Over £100, £200 or over £500? The price range is massive and I’m not sure where to start.

I will have a look at the Victorinox ones now.

Get two global ones, one large and one small and you won’t buy knives again.

BlooberryBiskits · 31/10/2022 18:41

I have found my fairly budget kitchen knives (kitchen devil & similar) fine for my purposes, usually last ten years or so

I recently bought a basic set from Russell Hobbs, it was about £25 and I think I got it from B&M. Bamboo block, bread knife, carving knife then medium & 2 small knives. I find this good for my needs & handy to have all in 1 block

I expect to get 5-10 years out of this set which I’d rather than spend hundreds for something fancier … I tend to use the medium knife for everything & have my kitchen devil one on use too as I put my knives in the dishwasher

i think if you are willing to pay £100 for a 5/6 piece set you’d get a good and v durable set

BTW: suggest you check out Black Friday sales at John Lewis/Amazon for this kind of thing

PurBal · 31/10/2022 18:43

Got a set of 3 Global knives for about £250. Worth every penny. Bought a knife roll to take them on self catering holidays, I’ll be damned trying to cook with crap knives.

Sprig1 · 31/10/2022 18:44

I had the same question this time last year. I ended going to my local cook shop and bought 1 x small knife and 1 x large knife with a combined value of just over £100. I am v happy with them and don't feel that I need more knives.

TheFlis12345 · 31/10/2022 18:44

TKMaxx are usually good for knives, I have picked up a good selection of Sabatiers there.

^ agree. Just have an idea of what you want. These are similar to what I have, I like plastic handles as light, comfortable, more durable than wood

All metal is more durable but I don’t like the feeling/worry about my hand slipping

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 31/10/2022 18:49

Just looked at Global knives - wow they are expensive! The cheapest chef’s knife is £185. For 1 knife. Are they really that good?

I agree that victorinox are a good and not stupidly expensive. Do not put them in the dishwasher. They should last a few decades. Buying super cheap knives is a false economy.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 31/10/2022 18:57

For normal household cooking knives should last decades not years. I have mostly Kitchen Devils "Professional" knives which are about 30 years old. They don't go in the diswasher. I sharpen my knives with whetstones but I'm sure you can get a decent sharpener and don't have to mess around with whetstones. I once had them professionally sharpened when I was struggling to get them properly sharp.
As someone else recommended, Victorinox knives are a good choice.
You don't have to buy a whole set at once. You can upgrade your knives over time.
If you are feeling extravagant, we added a Wusthof Classic Santoku knife to our collection and it;s our favourite general purpose knife now. It should be about £90.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 31/10/2022 18:58

Robert Welch are a good make that should last, but you need to invest in a sharpener for them. I have just one knife from there and use it for most things apart from bread.

LaQuern · 31/10/2022 19:06

If you have a branch of Nisbets near you pop in and have a chat.

My knives I had to get for college are still going strong 30 years on and will probably outlast me.

Buy a sharpening steel too

Itisbetter · 31/10/2022 19:27

Are they really that good? yes.

I’ve had mine for about twenty years. Totally fabulous.

Cynderella · 02/11/2022 18:06

I have a Global knife bought hugely discounted. Other knives are Ikea. Every weekend, I sharpen them all using a whetstone. I prefer the Global one because it's the smallest, but I can't honestly say it's any sharper once they've all been sharpened.

I wouldn't buy a set - we have four that are used all the time - the Global, two larger Ikea cook's knives and a bread knife. They are always washed up by hand, so it's enough - better to have a few that are the right size and you look after rather than a huge set and only use two or three, I think.

ChocChipOwl · 02/11/2022 18:44

I have a set of 5 Global knives, they were £250. Look nice in the kitchen though and last and last

LoliLouToo · 02/11/2022 18:54

I don't think you need a whole set. Just one or two. I have 3 global knives. A chef's, bread and utility. I sharpen them after every use.

minipie · 02/11/2022 19:04

I absolutely love my Wusthof Classic knives.

Most brands do several ranges, from entry level to top tier, priced accordingly. So if someone recommends eg Victorinox or Wusthof or Henckels or Sabatier you really need to know which range they are talking about.

Global handles have a very specific and unusual feel in the hand which I personally don’t like. So I would suggest trying some in person before buying. Less so for other brands with more standard handles, although still ideally you’d try some in person.

I would suggest not buying a set but instead buying individual knives. That way you end up with exactly the sizes you prefer rather than some which aren’t so useful. (Unless there happens to be a set with the right sizes for you of course but the point is, consider what size knives you want first.) Also buying one at a time means if you don’t love the first one you can shift to a different brand for the rest.

CatherinedeBourgh · 02/11/2022 19:11

I'm a very keen cook.

The knives I use day in day out are a set of small victorinox plastic handled knives. Were about 25 for 5 from amazon.

I've had all sorts of fancy knives over the years, but I've found what I really want is lots of knives I can keep sharp (a sharpener is essential) and that I can chuck in the dishwasher without worrying about them getting ruined.

Fancy knives just tend to sit there and not get used.

Not familiar with this brand but would expect to pay at least half of that for a decent quality chef's knife which will then last you a lifetime with occasional professional sharpening. Crucial to try them out in person so find a good kitchenware store and see how individual brands fit your hand.

I'm basically using a chef's knife (in my case, Wüsthof) and small paring knife for most of my kitchen needs. Plus a cheapest serrated bread knife and a good quality fileting knife - the latter is pure luxury and mainly used for dismembering whole chicken.

manan12377 · 03/11/2022 03:11

To purchase a Knife ,, First You should about your budged . Here are the average price of some knifes that i always recommend because I already used these knives .
Paring Knife $10 – $180
Utility Knife $20 – $60
Bread Knife $30 – $80

TheTeenageYears · 03/11/2022 04:38

Good knives need specific care something on the lines of no dishwasher, regular sharpening and being stored correctly - if you aren't going to do all that it really isn't worth going for expensive knives.
