Recommend me a good washer-dryer please! (Exciting topic, I know...)

We need to replace our washer-dryer - I've finally accepted that the dryer bit isn't going to work again and I cannot cope with drying everything on radiators all the time! Had a quick google on washer-dryers and am a bit overwhelmed by all the different options.

So please, if you are pleased with your washer-dryer and would recommend it, please tell me the make and model so I can stop trawling through them all - it's making my head hurt! Don't want to spend more than £350... (cheaper would be better!

PLEASE recommend one, somebody...

Bella I opened this thread a while ago to highly recommend my Miele washer-dryer but then saw your budget so I didn't, as it was about £800 I think, sorry!

Thought was there though!

bellabelly · 25/01/2008 17:04

Thank you for the thought - is it worth spending the extra money then? We are trying to tighten our belt financially but maybe I can convince DH...though he is a mothwallet at best of times! (Sorry DH if you are reading this )

rofl at mothwallet!

I would say it's worth it if you possibly can. I have read threads about washer-dryers on here and cheap ones don't get very good press, but only good things about the Miele ones.

bellabelly · 25/01/2008 17:47

Ok brill, I will put the squeeze on DH about it tonight. Anyone else got any recommendations?

I started a similar thread the other day as I'm looking for one too

Will try to find it for you- I am still undecided!

I think I probably will get an AEG one as they seem to come out better in reviews

MrsMuddle · 25/01/2008 17:57

I can't recommend one, but I can warn you not to get an Indeshit one. It washed OK (for a while) but the dryer was crap from day one.

All it did was make the clothes hot, so you ended up with a big pile of too-hot-to-touch wet clothes.

Have you got space for separate ones - I've seen a stacking system, one on top of the other. That's what I'd go for if you think you definitely need a dryer.

flowerybeanbag · 25/01/2008 18:27

Here's my Miele one.

bellabelly · 25/01/2008 21:14

Thanks CSS, will check out your thread too and see what people said. And thanks MrsM for the warning about indesit - their machines seemed like a good option because of the prices but I'll know better now. Definitely haven't got room here for separate washer and dryer - hoping to move soon and so I've been putting off buying a replacement thinking it'd be better to wait until we move but it is driving me MAD to have to dry everything on radiators. I DREAM of having a separate room for a washer, a dryer, linen press, etc etc...

FBB - will show DH later when he's had a drink and say THIS one, THIS one, oh pretty please! It looks great.

I think the WHICH reports rated them in the following order in terms of reliability/reviews:

Miele
AEG
Zanussi
Bosch

I think

bellabelly · 26/01/2008 01:19

Thanks CSS. My discussion with DH has just descended into me doing irrational sulking while he frets about our imminent overdraft so I will show him your post and present it as Fact. False economy to go for a cheap one, I say! But he is still a bit

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 26/01/2008 01:29

What you save in buying a cheap one, you lose in the cost of repairs I say

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 26/01/2008 01:30

PS- I found a great bargain on a Miele for £400 on my other thread..........

bellabelly · 27/01/2008 00:26

CSS - that is about half the price! Thank you (you may possibly have saved my marriage...)

ALSO- if you google the boots electrical site you'll also get a load of Boots Points if you order from there ( they do charge £19.99 delivery though but I think they connect FOC

mysonsmummy · 27/01/2008 01:05

try co-op electricals. after much research and the which guide i bought the LG 7.5kg Direct drive. it was nearly £600 in comet/currys and £350 at co-op. i took out the 5 year cover at a great price so cant really see that the cheaper ones costs more in repairs if you get cover.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 27/01/2008 12:13

LG- didn't know they did applicances!

Lilymaid · 27/01/2008 12:26

What about this one from Zanussi if finances are tight?

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 27/01/2008 12:39

I've got a budget of around £400 and just want the best I can get for the money really

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 27/01/2008 14:37

BUMP

PavlovtheCat · 27/01/2008 14:39

Do not buy hotpoint. Rubbish. Takes a long time to dry and a normal wash and two hour dry cycle (average time) uses 120 litres of water! And the washing side of it absolutely rubbish too, and has broken twice within warranty.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 27/01/2008 14:41

Thanks for that.

At the moment the AEG is getting my vote:

www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?ProductCode=AEG-WDR-L16830-W

Does anyone have this model? or the Which report on it?

PavlovtheCat · 27/01/2008 14:42

its all fine getting extended warranty, but if you get a co that has poor customer service, like hotpoint has, it can take a lot of convincing to send out an engineer, and when they do, it can take over a week, and they dont always carry the spares that are needed, which delays repair. Its not just the cost of machines breaking down, its the inconvenience and additional expense as a result.

I would spend the extra and go for a Miele, or a Bosch (i think they do washer dryers), we wish we had. Cant wait until ours breaks down again so we can buy one!!!
