I'm struggling to keep on top of the house atm 😫Feel like I'm always cleaning but every time I look there's always mess somewhere!!

If your house is always neat and tidy what are the main things you do every day to keep it that way?

People have a daily cleaning routine?! 😂😂😂

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 07/08/2022 16:47

Daily cleaning ? Uh ??

Ragwort · 07/08/2022 16:48

You could follow TOMM .... not that I do ... I rarely clean unless we have visitors Grin.

SpringAspen · 07/08/2022 16:49

At least I'm not alone here 😂😂

A cleaner! Mainly keeping on top of the kitchen and tidiness apart from that I do zero other cleaning.

Baystard · 07/08/2022 16:54

Daily? 😂

Kanaloa · 07/08/2022 16:54

For me the big thing is cleaning as I go. Whoever makes dinner cleans the pots/wipes down the sides as they go, so there is never a big pile of washing to do.

Also having good storage. A while ago I was overloaded with mess and clutter and realised I was just moving stuff from spot to spot. We have some better storage now (and less clutter) which makes it just easier to be tidy.

Putting a load of laundry on as soon as you have a load. I used to wait and try to do it all at the weekend but it became an impossible mountain to scale.

And the last thing is allowing kids to take responsibility. From a young age they can learn to clear away their toys before moving onto anything else, pick up after themselves etc. DH and I are outnumbered so no way could we be tidying up after all of them every time they did anything.

Floralnomad · 07/08/2022 16:55

I don’t have a cleaning routine . I don’t have any clutter and I don’t have mess , even when my kids were small they knew that toys went away after being played with the only person who gets to leave toys around the house is the dog ! . I wipe round the bathrooms every day which takes minutes and do the loos (3) . I have a cordless vacuum on each floor so they get run round about 3x per week . WRT bedrooms I dust on sheet changing day and generally do a different room each day as I have 1 double and 2 kings to do . I keep the kitchen clean as I go along and my husband does any deeper cleaning that needs doing .

Kanaloa · 07/08/2022 16:55

I would wonder too are you the only one cleaning? If so you’re swimming against the tide. A family home is the family’s responsibility - everyone should be pitching in! If you’re the only one tidying you’ll feel like the mess is always right behind you.

A580Hojas · 07/08/2022 16:56

The only things that I absolutely do daily without fail is make sure spills are cleaned up, uneaten food goes in the food waste caddy, any food in the fridge that's gone out of date ditto. And we always empty the kitchen bin if it is full.

I don't even wash dishes every day if I don't feel like it.

MyHeartSings · 07/08/2022 17:20

I follow TOMM but sort of adapt it to my own needs. Each day all the dishes get washed, beds made in the morning, toys put away at the end of the day, then a quick hoover of downstairs. DH helps at the end of the day with the dishes and toy tidy and DC although young do what they can. Each week every room gets a hoover, polish and sheets changed at some point. I’m a SAHM so obviously I’m around to do this. Key is little and often so nothing is ever really bad and everyone pitching in.

SaggyBlinders · 07/08/2022 23:54

If your house is always neat and tidy what are the main things you do every day to keep it that way?

Having less stuff, having a 'home' for everything, regularly decluttering.

I grew up in a really cluttered house, and was the same until my early twenties. My friend helped me declutter years ago; she's like Marie Kondo 🤣, it was really hard but it felt so. much. better.

Now I try and think before I bring anything into my home. Do I need it? Will I use it? Where will it 'live'? Is it going to end up lying around the house and pissing me off in 6 months?

Decluttering is the key to being able to tidy up quickly: sounds stupid but I will sit in each room and think to myself "Do I like how this room looks? How does it feel? What needs to stay and what needs to go?" I try to do this in each room around September and March. Declutter clothes around October and April and put winter/summer clothes in vacuum bags. Unwanted Christmas and birthday presents go straight to charity shop.

Have a one touch policy with letters: if it's something that I need to action on then I take a photo on my phone, save it to a file called "post", and then put it straight into the recycling, or cut it up if it's confidential.

Then when you've decluttered and assigned a 'home' for everything, make a cleaning rota that works for you and delegate. Ours is loosely based on the organised mum method.

Hoover/sweep daily and clean bathrooms daily. Kitchen wiped after every meal and every time I wash up. Litter trays done asap. Bins out daily. Tidy up as you go. So an hour tops per day in small doses, between two adults.
other stuff is factored in one or twice a week/month. Which may add an extra hour here and there. Deep clean and de clutter every spring.
but - we don’t have children. Do what works for you.

Theoldwoman · 08/08/2022 03:52

Five things every day.

  1. Make beds
  2. At least one load of laundry from start to finish.
  3. Clean kitchen and run the dishwasher
  4. Vacuum one room on the house ( I often keep going and do more but one is minimum)
  5. Take out recycling and rubbish, clear front entrance ( shoes etc)
Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 08/08/2022 21:17

Eufy every day.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 21:34

My house is NOT always (or ever) neat and tidy by any stretch of the imagination but I've been listening to A Slob Comes Clean and found a bit of a revelation in daily habits, so most days I do the following:

  • Clear counters in kitchen, wipe down, fill dishwasher, turn on when full
  • (Teen DS1 empties, it in theory when it's empty, in practice when one of us yells at him that we need it emptied. He also then checks bins and takes them out)
  • If I have more energy I clear the floor of all obstacles as if I was going to put the robot hoover on. If the floor is gritty I will put the hoover on too.
  • If I have more energy, I check the bathrooms and remove items that aren't meant to be there (mainly clothes and toilet roll tubes and empty shampoo bottles, some toys)
  • If I'm still going after all this I set a timer for 5 minutes and start at the front door and just tidy up randomly, which makes absolutely no difference to anything, but the method promises it will after a while.
  • Also if I was feeling especially productive in the first place, I might have actually bothered to collect plates from the rest of the house.
  • I also try to do laundry as and when - I have a tumble dryer now so that makes it easier to just move things from one machine to another and I can do several loads in a day if I need to rather than having to wait for stuff to dry on an airer. So will typically do about an average of a load a day but may skip several days and then do several per day to catch up.
  • DH tends to clean up the living room after the kids have gone to bed, he will also tidy through the plates and start the dishwasher if I haven't started it earlier. And he runs the hoover in the front room.
  • DS1 is meant to clean his room every Sunday, he frequently doesn't bother until we explode about it but it gets done about once every 4-6 weeks at least.
  • Other rooms get done when we have random energy, me during the week or DH at weekends.
So I think our true daily stuff is dishwasher, counters, living room tidy/hoover and laundry.
BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 21:40

Other ASCC tips that seem to be helping/making a difference:

Reduce amount of stuff in house until it feels manageable ("clutter threshold") not got here yet.
Have a constant donate bag/box ready to go and when it's full take it to the charity shop and don't whatever you do look inside. Just leave the whole bag there.
When tidying up or organising/decluttering a space, take stuff wherever it goes straight away instead of putting it in a "keep box/pile" which just ends up being more mess. It takes longer but it doesn't create mess, so the net result is better.

Only way I can keep my house looking good is clean every day

I put robotic hoover out morning and night

Wipe bathrooms daily (4)

When I go in shower I spray it down before getting in then give it a wipe when I get it

I do washing every day and put clothes away while my kids are getting ready for bed

Dishes straight into dishwasher

I wash the floors every couple of days

I'd say I prob spend in total a hour a day cleaning but it keeps the house looking fresh.

What is TOMM?

What is TOMM?

InDubiousBattle · 14/03/2023 10:44

TOMM - The Organised Mum Method

Stuff I do every day includes-
Making beds
Clear floors (no dirty clothes or toys etc left ont any floors)
Quick wipe around the bathroom sink
Washing up, clearing up after cooking, kitchen floor is swept every day
Load of washing done

The house is generally neat and tidy so easier to keep clean. Everything has a place and by the end of the day pretty much everything is in its place.

BlooberryBiskits · 14/03/2023 11:01

I also clean daily

  • dirty dishes in DW straight away, run nightly and unload each morning
  • wipe kitchen counters after each meal is prepared, sweep every night
  • wipe down bathrooms daily
  • quick ‘reset’ of each room when I’m done using it (eg air bed then straighten out the room after my shower, straighten out living room before heading to bed)

I either clean whole house in 1 go at the weekend, or do 1 room a day (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms etc) for about 30-40 mins depending on how busy I am (I think cleaning in 1 go is actually more efficient but I need around 3 hours so breaking it up can be more realistic )

CharlotteDoyle · 14/03/2023 11:06

My routine?

Walk into a room > frown and/or tut at its untidiness > invite someone over > panic clean the whole house in preparation for guest > allow house to fall gradually into disarray > repeat

Slimjimtobe · 14/03/2023 11:07

I put a load of washing on each day
batch cook so I don’t have mountains of pots to clean each day and that frees up time to clean

I try and do one special job a day (eg oven or cupboard drawer or something )

i hoover and mop most days - my house is very very clean and clutter free but I soaks all my time

SomePeopleAreJustBloodyStupid · 14/03/2023 11:12

Daily -
Kitchen - I make sure any washing-up is done, wipe all tops, light switches and door handles, put bleach down the sink.
Bathroom - wipe all set, handle, lid. Put bleach down the toilet. Wipe sink, hang up any wet towels.
Living rooms - tidy away any cups/magazines etc.

Bedroom - ensure beds are aired, curtains opened, windows opened for a while.
Washing - done daily. Put on the line or clothes horse.

Everything else - hoovering, mopping, polishing is done 2 or 3 times a week
Bedding changed weekly, often twice a week.
