ive got 2 options -

  1. Buy an reasonable cost kitchen (not too expensive) and a cheap worktop

  2. Buy a cheap kitchen with a expensive worktop

what do you think?

Both Ikea worktops and kitchens are reasonable anyways imo. We've got the yellow/white adele kitchen and the solid oak worktop.

Wisteria · 09/01/2008 11:13

Be warned though, my friend's Ikea kitchen keeps having to have the front doors replaced because the paint is peeling off.

MaureenMLove · 09/01/2008 11:15

I think I'd go for decent work tops tbh. Much easier to replace doors that worktops!

GrapefruitMoon · 09/01/2008 11:15

Snap Ledodgy!

fishie · 09/01/2008 11:16

i've got varde freestanding it is super. wood tops still look good 2 years on.

well option 1 got a character on the kitchen doors etc but option 2 is plain doors

ledodgy - we are looking at the yellow/white one too by ADEL or maybe white..!!

2 and get a good joiner

Wisteria · 09/01/2008 11:20

If the kitchens are of the same standard (which knowing Ikea they probably are) then I would go for 2 in retrospect then as plain doors are a lot less work than ridges or patterned ones.

Cappuccino · 09/01/2008 11:22

2

I read that you spend your money on the worktop - it is like putting cheap outfit with expensive accessories ie it makes the kitchen look better

bootsmonkey · 09/01/2008 11:25

Def 2 - we have the high gloss white Ikea slab doors with bar handles and spent the money on black granite worktops. It looks smart, is easy to wipe down and cost about £500 for all the cupboards, although I did re-use some carcasses. The granite was a leetle bit more than that. But under £5k all in, including cooker and hood...

biglips · 09/01/2008 12:37

hmm interesting as everyone was going for option 2 as was expecting option 1 to be honest

oooh keep them coming pls

OP posts:
Piffle · 09/01/2008 12:40

an expensive worktop can make the cupboards look cheaper...
I'd say option 1

Flibbertyjibbet · 09/01/2008 12:47
DP fits kitchens (he IS that good joiner) and always tells people with limited budget to spend the money on work top. But when you say CHEAP kitchen, try to avoid the very basic super cheap one as nothing can make these look good.
biglips · 09/01/2008 13:28

oh its not a cheapo kitchen as its a good quality kitchen but ikeas cheap kitchen iykwim??

I hate my ikea kitchen! Within a year it looks like it needs to be replaced and I have looked after it very carefully. They have some great ideas and great bits and bobs but I would never ever have an ikea kitchen again

mumemma · 09/01/2008 20:20

Bewilderbeast, what do you hate about it and which one is it? Just bought the abstrakt white gloss, not fitted yet but keen to hear any feedback on Ikea kitchens generally. Also struggling with worktops.

snowleopard · 09/01/2008 20:27

I love mine, but we chose solid wood everything because we didn't want any peeling or flaking. It looks brand new a year on and we have a friend who has the same one and it still looks new after 6 years.

If I was choosing now, I would spend the money on the worktop - it makes such a difference to the day-in, day-out experience of using the kitchen - more so than the cupboards I think. And it's easy to get new/different cupboard doors, maybe later if you have the money sometime.

LittleMissNorty · 09/01/2008 20:28

We've just had an IKEA oak kitchen fitted and its lovely. However, I bought expensive laminate worktop elsewhere and had my own joiner / kitchen fitter fit it all. Anything you don't use in IKEA, you take back and they refund within 90 days.....I got £84 back on legs / plinth and odds and sods this way

Bewilderbeast · 09/01/2008 20:43

its an oak veneer no Idea what version as we didn't fit it, basically within a few weeks the worktop had blown because the tap fittings into the worktop (ikeas are different to just about every other tap it seems) are crap and getting a decent seal between the top and the tap is practically impossible. Why in cupboard carouselle has collapsed on itself. The drawers are shocking and the oven doesn't fit into its cupboard properly, basically if ds gets hold of the oven door handle and sits down with enough force he can pull the oven out of its cupboard even though it is fitted with ikea's fittings. the cupboards get damaged incredibly easily because they are so soft. And the hob blew up and cost about 100 quid to fix. on the plus side i love my larder cupboard and when it was new and had never been used it looked beautiful but it can not stand up to everday use.
I have had two professional joiners round to the house to do different things both have taken one look at the kitchen and said "ahh ikea kitchens I always refuse to fit those because they have no tolerance for error"

Millarkie · 09/01/2008 20:51

We had the Adel yellow-white kitchen fitted in our last house, but bought extra-deep expensive worktops and also expensive non-ikea handles. In the utility room we used the same Adel cupboards but IKEA worktop and it didn't look quite as good IMO.
We didn't have a problem with the quality of the units though, they were still looking great when we moved out. (which is more than I can say for the very expensive fitted kitchen in the house we bought - which is falling apart already )

LittleMissNorty · 09/01/2008 20:52

That's a shame....and very different to our experience with IKEA....but I didn't buy the worktop, taps or any appliances from them.

We went for IKEA cos they do tall 92" wall cabinets, and they take 12" dinner plates.

My fitter found it fine to fit apparently...
