Help! Neutradol Carpet Powder REEKS

Help!!

We have gusts coming on Sat. I decided to borrow a carpet cleaner (vax platinum) and wash the carpet in their room as it is a bit old/grim. Cant afford to replace or sand floorboards atm.

Carpet looked a lot better after cleaning but despite me as much water remov as possie with the machine, radiators, windows open etc, the carpet smelled of wet dog. When it was fully dry it still ponged so I used neutradol carpet powder yesterday evening. Hoovered it up after 30 mins.

It fucking reeks. It smelled like industrial floor cleaner. The dog smell as gone (we don't even have a dog but maybe the previous owner did). Last night it was overpowering. It still reeks this morning. One of the guests is a little girl and i need to get rid of the smell!

(Funnily enough the carpets smell ok now, it's the AIR!)

Aside from vowing never to use this abomination again, I have :

-Left the window open till 1am last night, and opened again just now. (Don't like leaving ground floor windows open all night).

-Hoovered twice yesterday evening.

What else can I do?! Leave window open? Keep hoovering? Use bicarbonate of soda? Could smell have got into other things like the sofa?

Please help, i have a few days and very little money to sort this! I don't want to wash the carpet again, nor can I rip up the carpet as I don't know what it's like underneath.

Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🤞🤞

I'd try bicarb that seems to neutralise nasty smells. Surely it smells better than wet dog though ?

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 08:13

It does yes, just overpowering chemical smell now. I have found a full tub of bicarb in the baking cupboard and sprinkled it down, also hoovered again before I did that. Will hoover again this afternoon! If anyone has any other tips please let me know

It's like being trapped in a car with 50 of those little Christmas tree air freshener things

Stay calm & keep room aired. Your perception of the smell might not be the same as visitors? Explain when they arrive but I’m sure it’ll be ok. Neutrodol is vile stuff! I had it in spray form & I had to ditch it.

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 08:21

Thank you, I didn't want to see this at the start because I didn't want to be accused of virtue signalling but they are Ukrainian refugees, a lady and a little girl. It's a lovely big room and the carpet looks lovely and clean now, just overwhelming neutradol smell which I just don't want them to have to put up with after everything they've been through!

And they are just staying for a night or two…… Months! I do really need to get rid of the smell. Would a large area rug help if all else fails?

Fingers crossed for you that the bicarbonate works.

I used some of that stuff on the living room rug ages ago and am still brushing out bits of powder despite regular vaccing. It improved a lot after I used that vanish carpet foam stuff. It’s about £6 for a tin so that be worth a go.

candycane222 · 29/03/2022 08:38

Turning up the heat in there might 'vaporise' the smell a bit faster?

BlueFlavour · 29/03/2022 08:39

Keep your window open. Have you got a scented candle? That might help.
Hope all goes well. Flowers

BlueFlavour · 29/03/2022 08:49

I would also repeat bicarbonate procedure!

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 08:55

Will get more bicarbonate and just keep doing it. Will white vinegar help or will it make it worse?

OP posts:
Electrox · 29/03/2022 09:12

Yes, you can use white as well. It makes a chemical reaction with the bicarbonate of soda. It should undo some of the neutradol smell. You could also shake a few drops of essential oil into the bicarb or vinegar.

Electrox · 29/03/2022 09:13

white vinegar, not just white!

ODFOx · 29/03/2022 09:27

Probably stating the obvious but you have emptied the hoover haven't you?
If the carpet doesn't smell but the air does you aren't just whooshing the tiniest particles of neutradol out of your hoover over and over are you?

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 09:31

I did empty at once but I haven't emptied it today, I will empty it when I get back from taking my toddler swimming, Before doing any more hoovering.

It's a "shark anti hair wrap " and I wonder if I can rinse multiple parts of it. Does anybody know? Grateful for all the help, am panicking

Don't panic, its only Tuesday and you have until Saturday, keep the windows open as much as possible and air the room, the smell will fade.

ChangedToday · 29/03/2022 16:18

@hassletassle I regularly rinse my Shark - the machine filter: the white foam pieces, and also the dirt compartment (?) can be rinsed. In all cases make sure it's really dry before using again - I leave it to dry in the open for 24hrs.

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 18:13

@ChangedToday thank you. I washed everything I could possibly wash earlier and use the hairdryer to dry everything off. Hoovered up bicarb round one and I think it does smell about 10% less noxious. So I've just been out to the corner shop and bought all of the bicarb they have and put it down, will leave it on overnight. I think I might go on Amazon and buy a huge 5 kg sack of bicarb!. Thank you for the support everybody I know it sounds like a silly thing but I'm absolutely devastated, I can't have them arrive in a room that smells of either water wet dog or noxious intense chemicals !!

It’s horrendous. I put a load onto a rug a few weeks ago and I still have a chemically cat wee type of smell. The rug was fine before.

I’d recommend hoovering over and over and over again along with the bicarbonate of soda

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 29/03/2022 18:31

I made this mistake too, it stunk of a public toilet cleaning smell and it made me gip everytime I walked in to the room. I think I ended up buying a tonne of Shake N Vac which smells much nicer and kept using that over the top!

EezyOozy · 29/03/2022 18:32

@CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood did that help?!😞

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 29/03/2022 18:34

I don’t know about shake and vac, I can’t imagine any of them mix well with neutradol. I think you’d be better off putting your lot in with the bicarbonate.

katicomps · 29/03/2022 18:39

I've used that stuff and know exactly what you mean, but it does go after a couple of days.
Can you keep the window open and the door closed til you need to go in there to make it up for their arrival? I think that's your best bet as you'll just start layering smells if you try to mask it with something else.

Pissyduck · 29/03/2022 18:46

Ground coffee left out in a bowl can help with neutralising smells.

I think airing it out as much as possible will help, and I think what another poster said about the smell possibly being in the hoover might be what's happening. Maybe air for a few days and see if you can borrow someone else's hoover, or clean all cleanable parts of your hoover
