i hate it.make the boys go outsideno advice though.we just live in stinky house.we have lino though

Niecie · 06/01/2008 16:09

My boys have mess up the floor in the downstairs loo by weeing on it. Its laminate and starting to warp. Thankfully they won't use it any more because it seems to be the resting place of many a large spider - wimps.

It is really difficult to get rid of the smell though. The only way I have managed it was wiping everything in the vicinity with bleach. That means getting into all the nooks and crannies of the loo too. There is a certian morbid fascination in sticking a clean cloth into corners and seeing how yellow it is when it comes out.

I once moved into a house and a family with 4 small boys had moved out of it. The bathroom was carpetted and the carpet and underlay around the loo had rotted somewhat, as had the floorboards underneath. Someone recommended I use Jeyes fluid (but it is quite toxic stuff I know!) I went back to the bare boards for weeks and just kept wiping the floorboards with the solution and letting it dry...eventually the smell of this permeated the floorboards.

My friend who visited me regularly got used to me asking her for a 2nd opinion on whether it still smelled awful. When we both thought it had I recovered the floor but not with carpet.

p.s Jeyes fluid is very toxic to cats and probably kids, I had a cat at the time and he was kept locked out of the bathroom during this process.

Niecie - can SO identify with you ......... am always amazed at how far from the loo the wee actually ends up!!

I keep a packet of flushable wipes in there and just wipe all around, on the skirting board etc!!!

Yep, just pour neat bleach on a cloth. Can't use too much though as I would be in danger of ruining the floor even more but it has got rid of the smell.

My boys 10.6 and 8 do it all the time. Trouble is they do not lift the seat up, so it catches the edge of it and sprays everywhere. This is definitely one of my bug bears.

onepieceoflollipop · 06/01/2008 16:17

Cod even as I typed my response to you I could almost remember the smell of our bathroom and this was about 8 years ago.

I almost resorted to replacing the floorboards it was horrible.

Upstairs on the lino I use Dettol floor wipes which seems to work there. They don't seem to work on the laminate.

Weird where it get too isn't - how do they manage to get it on the U-bed fgs? Can they wee round corners?

Scramble · 06/01/2008 16:19

What about buying a couple of feet of Clear plastic fllor protector from a hardware store. Cut to fit around loo and seal with silicone, leave in place until kids leave home.

Niecie · 06/01/2008 16:19

that should say 'u-bend by the way. Thankfully they don't wee in bed.

Tortington · 06/01/2008 16:19

I found it best to create a baking soda and water paste. Rub it into the area and apply distilled white vinegar over it. Blot this up with clean white towels, and repeat it no more than two times. Follow that with a good rinsing of water, blotting up the moisture. It will smell like vinegar for a short time, but the urine smell should not come back.

Must admit feeling relieved that my dh is fairly house trained (!) and we only have dds. . However we do have a lot of little boys that visit, friends of dd1 and we have a similar situation.

It is a pain mopping up but we have ceramic tiles and 2 toilets. 2nd toilet is in our ensuite so generally no visitors in there unless they are staying over or there is an emergency!

Custy's tip sounds a lot safer and environmentally friendly than mine, and vinegar is fab for most cleaning/defumigating jobs. Great for sweaty armpits (clothes not skin) and nappies so would work well for you I would think.
