Bin theft shock

lazarou · 02/01/2008 10:45

Some scumbag has stolen our grey wheelie bin full of rubbish. Anyone know where i can get a cheap wheelie bin other than the council?
Also will the binmen empty any size bin or is 240litre the maximum?

charliecat · 02/01/2008 10:50

if you say its been stolen you will get one FOC.

lazarou · 02/01/2008 10:58

I emailed the council and got a reply saying to buy a new one. I told them it had been stolen and was full of rubbish but no offer of a bin foc.

also dont just go buy and identical bin

our council wont even empty any bins unless they have the 'council logo' on them for 'health and safety' reasons... even when they ARE identical

charliecat · 02/01/2008 11:03

OMG. Ring and speak to a human. My bin got stolen a couple of times and it was replaced FOC.

here:

Sorry to hear of the apparent theft - especially unusual when bins are
full!
(Presumably this was not a prank by yougsters or someone, and the bin
is in a different location?)

To order a replacement bin, please call our Customer Service Unit on
01225 776655 (it's an automated service initially, so please wait for the
Customer Service option) and one of our colleagues will take details
and arrange for a new bin to be delivered to you, or for you to collect
from our Waste and Recycling Depot. As grey bins are the ownership of
the individual property and not the Local Council, there is a charge
for the bin. The charge is £37 for the larger 240 litre bin, and £25 for
the smaller 140 litre bin. You will also be asked to make payment at
the time of ordering using either a debit or credit card.

As an alternative, you may find other commercial suppliers of bins
available via internet services.

Green bins and black boxes are supplied free of charge.

We trust the above will be of some help in resolving the problem.

omg. So is the house yours or Housing association, wondering whether they would replace it?
Have you had a good wander about yeah? See if its somewhere about the place?
What a shit.

lazarou · 02/01/2008 11:59

Yes, dh went and had a look for it but he couldnt find it. My parents own the house, we just rent it off them. I think i will get some barb wire or perhaps an electric fence to go round the new one. Bloody grasping thieving fagins!

I just had a replacement wheelie bin from my council, no problem at all. Your authority sounds very odd. (Although mine wasn't stolen, it was crushed by the bin lorry!)

lazarou · 02/01/2008 12:03

Yes, I notice they keep the grounds around hte local council offices looking all nice and neat and lovingly mowed, but the rest of the town looks like a shitehole and they wont replace a stolen bin.

When you get a new one, paint a large house number on each side so if it goes walking again you will be able to see it is yours.

Our recycling bin went missing and the council only relented when dh said b*gger the recycling then (I guess they had targets to reach) and they provided a new one. The original one turned up a couple of weeks later, so now we have 2 and manage to fill them both each fortnight.

tribpot · 04/01/2008 07:37

It really varies. Where I used to live in Scotland, the kids would nick all the wheelie bins on bonfire night so after the first year, when the council replaced all the bins for free we were told that we had to bring them into the house on bonfire night (the little buggers had no compunction about going into people's back gardens to fetch them) and we'd be charged for a replacement.

lizziemun · 04/01/2008 08:40

Was it your collection day, as on christmas eve our dustman took my bin with them when they emptied the bin in the close i live in.

lazarou · 04/01/2008 09:02

It had our number on it. I really dont know what they did with the rubbish. It was a pretty revolting bin, covered in all sorts of shite so i don't really know why ours was taken when the neighbours bin is far superior.
Ive just put my recycling bin out so that will probably go as well.

hmm, bit dubious about the 'zide pazzage' i suppose its better than the back pazzage. I live in wiltshire, and you?

OP posts:
Sherbert37 · 04/01/2008 09:27

Are you sure it didn't get broken when they were emptying it? This happened to mine and they took it away without letting me know. Luckily one of the neighbours had seen.

lazarou · 04/01/2008 09:34

I have no idea because we can't see the driveway from where we are. Our house is part of a few houses and flats converted from an old nursing home and we are round the back so we can't see whats happening at the front.
Plus, no bugger round here would give a toss as long as it's not theirs.
Sorry, am sounding a bit grumpy today.

bubblerock · 04/01/2008 09:36

Our wheelie bin was stolen and we had to get a crime number before we could get a free new one. Do you know any OAPs? I'm sure they get there's replaced free.

Just read this - don't some poeple take the p*ss! We've had our recycling bins pinced several times (luckily not thebig ones) and have had them replaced free of charge but what a carry on - as if we dont pay enough in council tax to provide bins when they are pinched!
What do they think youre going to do with them if you fib and are blagging an extra one? The council wont empty two lol!

Thanks oops, it's ok i'll buy a new one. Hey ho, it's only a bin.

OP posts:
lazarou · 04/01/2008 13:55

I don't bloody believe it. I walked round the estate next to ours and i am certain that i saw my bin. It's outside someones house with the same number as ours! They have two bins, one is at their door with no wheels on and the other is on the pavement, bold as brass and im sure its ours as the number is written on in the same colour paint. But you know when your brain says 'well maybe it just looks like your bin' and you can't actually prove it's definitely yours? My mum offered to go and knock on the door, but i said no as it looks really rough and I dont fancy getting me head kicked in over a bin.
