What’s your ‘food policy’ in your home?

Is it kitchen only for food or do you allow snacks in living room/dining rooms?

I usually enjoy having a lovely bowl of soup on the sofa after a lovely long walk but I’m about to get a brand new light colour sofa so thinking this might have to stop.

I also love taking my coffee up to my bedroom as I get ready in the morning but thinking with a white carpet i’m due to get soon and white vanity, this will be a thing of the past…

Is it really grotty to be eating/drinking in bedrooms and living rooms?

We have trays for eating food in the living room

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/01/2022 21:42

No, it’s a great joy of life - but getting white sofas, carpets and vanities (what is this?!), is v v unreasonable. Get a practical coloured sofa, and floorboards and a different coloured vanity thingie.

Evening meal in the dining room. Breakfast in the kitchen.. After school snacks usually their rooms. Dishes must be (nagged) removed when I notice them or Saturdays!!

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2022 21:45

We eat wherever we feel like downstairs.

We've never done eating in bedrooms but do have tea/coffee up there. I'm not sure I would if I had a white carpet though!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 03/01/2022 21:45

Our downstairs is open plan, so it's food on the main floor only - none upstairs or downstairs in the bedrooms.

Taswama · 03/01/2022 21:48

Kids only allowed to eat in kitchen or dining room.
Parents have coffee in bed, hot drinks in office, wine and chocolates on sofa after kids in bed but no meals outside of kitchen / dining room.

SilverGlassHare · 03/01/2022 21:52

We eat in the sitting room sometimes. It’s nice to have eg cheese and crackers in front of the tv occasionally instead of sitting at the dinner table. We have wooden floors downstairs though… Also I have breakfast in bed sometimes and DH and I always have a brew in bed, and we have cream carpet in our bedroom! Neither of us have spilled though DS tipped over his cup of hot chocolate in there once and the mark is still there faintly…

I’m with PP - buy furniture to suit your lifestyle, rather than changing your lifestyle to fit your furniture!

Agadorsparticus · 03/01/2022 21:56

We'll have a coffee in bed. I dont allow food upstairs though and we eat all food at the table, breakfast, lunch and dinner. A snack is ok for the sofa but we have very clumsy kids (and me) so it's easier to eat at the table.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/01/2022 21:57

Sit on a throw to seat your soup and buy a coffee mug that has a lid. Problem solved.

Pegasussnail · 03/01/2022 21:57

No major rules but we have tiled floors and leather sofas. Only one cream sofa and that is in a room we don't use much

Workyticket · 03/01/2022 21:59

Life is too short to worry about a white settee or a white carpet. We eat on the settee most nights despite having a dining table.

I once helped to clean red wine and tomato pasta based vomit off a white carpet after a party. No way was that carpet ever going to be pure white again after that!

rrhuth · 03/01/2022 21:59

We eat anything downstairs, and 'dry' things upstairs - I wouldn't let the kids take cereal upstairs but am fine with toast/cake.

moochies · 03/01/2022 22:00

We had an Indian takeaway on trays in bed the other night Blush

Candlealmond · 03/01/2022 22:04

😂😂😂 life’s too short to be eating at a dining table all the time!

We have a sofa in a dark colour with a washable cover!

MoiraNotRuby · 03/01/2022 22:11

DS has misophonia, so food is allowed in all rooms of the house. People can eat wherever suits them best. I had a Boxing Day picnic in the bath.

Tayegete · 03/01/2022 22:14

We bought non-trendy brown leather sofas for this reason. The kids are so messy but we can be relaxed and everything wipes off.

lljkk · 03/01/2022 22:15

I never eat in the bath.. but slovenly elsewhere. I would feel uptight in own home if I had strict rules. Don't mind a bit of grot, anyway.

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 03/01/2022 22:15

Almost any room of the house. Not bathrooms, well, I have been known to eat a piece of toast in the bath. The kids weren't allowed greasy or sloppy food in their bedrooms, unless ill, until mid-teens. We all know how to eat in a civilised fashion at the table in the dining room, and which cutlery is for what, though. And none of this eating noisily with mouths open as has been discussed elsewhere on this site today Smile

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2022 22:18

Life’s too short for food policies I can’t believe anyone actually has them. We eat where we please and as we please, clearly we need to be careful as appropriate and if we spill anything we clean it up.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 03/01/2022 22:20

When the children were younger they weren’t allowed to eat in the living room

I’ve got a picture of all three of them stood in the doorway eating ricecakes while trying to watch the television 😀

SantaMonicaPier · 03/01/2022 22:22

I prefer the kids don't take hot food to their rooms but other than that we are relaxed. I love a morning coffee in bed. One morning I tripped and covered our light grey carpet...the carpet cleaner sorted it.

LadyCatStark · 03/01/2022 22:32

My only policy is that you bring the pots/ cups/ rubbish to the kitchen when you’ve finished with them. Is it too late to change the colour of the carpet??

DockOTheBay · 03/01/2022 22:34

No food upstairs. We used to have breakfast in bed sometimes but it just ended up with crumbs everywhere and dirty plates taking up the bedside tables, so no more.
Kids eat all meals at dining table or in the kitchen (breakfast bar), except very occasionally breakfast on the sofa on a Sunday. DH and I will have a TV dinner on average once a week. Snacks can be eaten on the sofa.
