What’s your ‘food policy’ in your home?

Is it kitchen only for food or do you allow snacks in living room/dining rooms?

I usually enjoy having a lovely bowl of soup on the sofa after a lovely long walk but I’m about to get a brand new light colour sofa so thinking this might have to stop.

I also love taking my coffee up to my bedroom as I get ready in the morning but thinking with a white carpet i’m due to get soon and white vanity, this will be a thing of the past…

Is it really grotty to be eating/drinking in bedrooms and living rooms?

Now we are all adults we eat non sloppy food on the sofa if we fancy it. Not full meals though, but more because it is awkward to eat knife snd fork dinners on the sofa. Might eat risotto from a bowl, though, in front of the TV.

Didn’t allow food upstairs when the kids were small, just too much mess everywhere. Cake and crumbs in the rugs, spills on beds, kids and 2 f/t jobs meant less time cleaning up was a priority.

I always drink my morning coffee in bed but couldn’t be arsed carting full meals up and down stairs for a potentially messy uncomfortable experience.

PattyPan · 04/01/2022 09:21

We don’t have a space to eat in the kitchen so it’s meals at the dining table and snacks are allowed on the sofa (open plan living & dining room). No food upstairs and nothing but water in the bedroom.

Christmas1988 · 04/01/2022 09:23

Eat meals or large snacks at the table but I will allow small non messy snacks in the living room.

Libertynan · 04/01/2022 09:25

Anywhere goes- although no young DC

We recently had very light grey carpet fitted in bedrooms and lounge and the only person to spill was me. Black coffee took a bit of getting out of the carpet but I have a really good spray for that. Ditto red wine on the brand new pale fabric sofa ..

We’re just as careful as possible

Nomoreporridge872 · 04/01/2022 09:28

Children only have food in te kitchen. I don’t want them trailing mess round the house that I have to clean up (they are small). I will eat in the sitting room once they are in bed if I feel like it. Ditto cups of tea etc. It doesn't occur to me to take food or drink upstairs except for water at night

Thewiseoneincognito · 04/01/2022 09:43

Sorry, couldn’t read and run…but a White carpet? Apart from it being tacky AF it’s also impractical even for the most neurotic of crumb twitchers.

ldontWanna · 04/01/2022 09:44

Wherever. Tbh DD is the only that eats actual food in the bedroom. We mostly have snacks/fruit in there . I eat at the table, I also need full lights on when I eat. OH mostly eats on the sofa. During the school week DD and I eat at the table together.

Puddletown · 04/01/2022 09:47

No food upstairs, too paranoid about getting mice. Downstairs gets hoovered instantly and regularly so that's fine.

trumpisagit · 04/01/2022 09:52

Your best solution are dark carpets and sofa, and do as you please.

evtheria · 04/01/2022 09:53

DS not allowed food/snacks in bedroom. We always eat our meals at dining table, though our living room is too small to eat meals there anyway. Occasionally snacks in living room when watching a film on weekend, though it secretly winds me up because I’m always digging stale popcorn and stray teaspoons out from the sofa. I really hate food smells in the house outside of meal time, so when it was Christmas Eve and we ate party/buffet food on trays in front of the tv DS thought it was practically a party 😂

Our main living room is upstairs so we only eat downstairs in the kitchen or at the dining table.

DS is allowed to have snacks in his room.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/01/2022 11:16

Our policy is eat where you like but bring your own dishes back to the kitchen.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/01/2022 11:42

I’m not fussy at all. Dh and I often eat off trays if it’s just us, Young Gdcs are allowed to eat off laps in the sitting room, even though I have a pale yellow sofa. There is the occasional spill but it usually sponges off, and the covers are easily wash- and dry-able.

I can’t imagine ever having a white carpet! I’d be a permanent nervous wreck, ditto (I imagine) any guests. So I dare say it’d be a great idea if you’re the sort of person who hates anyone visiting.

Why are you designing a home that is unlivable for how you enjoy living?!
Oneforthemoneytwo · 04/01/2022 11:53

No food upstairs, this is absolutely non negotiable. All meals at the table. Snacks such a crisps / biscuits can be eaten on the sofa but not upstairs

Bit rude 😂😂 definitely not tacky, they’re expensive beautiful carpets!
Twobirdsinatree · 04/01/2022 12:07

I'm grim and ill eat and drink in any room in the house! Love breakfast in bed sometimes!
I only let my kids eat and drink downstairs tho because they easily spill and drop things everywhere when they are eating. All the floors are wooden or tiled down there

Id probably let them eat and drink upstairs when they are older as long as they bring the plates and cups back down

minipie · 04/01/2022 12:10

Food only in the kitchen, for everyone (but there are two sofas in the kitchen)

Adults can take drinks anywhere (I wfh so take coffee to my desk and so does DH. One day I suspect a disaster will happen)

Kids can only take drinks out of the kitchen in their leak proof drinking bottles

ParkheadParadise · 04/01/2022 12:13

We usually eat at the table. Food is allowed upstairs.Downstairs is open-plan. When dd comes home from school she will have a snack and drink on the sofa watching tv.

Arethechildreninbedyet · 04/01/2022 12:15

We eat meals at the table.

Kids are allowed fruit on the sofa but anything else up to the table, it detracts from the appeal of endless snacking I found.

DH and I eat with the kids during the day or DH will have separate meals if he’s on a night shift but once they’re in bed it’s sofa time all night, cheese, crisps, chocolate, pudding anything goes!

I will occasionally give them a meal in front of the tv if I’m in a rush, need them to eat/be kept quiet, have stuff to do etc. Also if they’re ill.

No food upstairs either, drinks are allowed but I do a round up at bedtime and out them on the landing to go down and they have water overnight.

Tbf if they asked to take something up I wouldn’t be overly averse I suppose it’s just the habit that they don’t associate food with upstairs. They’re also young primary school age so I suppose that will change as they get older.

SilverOtter · 04/01/2022 12:16

We don't generally eat upstairs, although my children do try to sneak stuff up there sometimes.

My husband brought me a bacon butty in bed a couple of mornings ago and I didn't object to thatSmile
