How strict are you about what does and doesn't go in the dishwasher?

For instance - miscellaneous toys and plastic items that you don't know are BPA free / dishwasher safe.

May have flipped out at DH for putting garden pegs in the dishwasher for the 1,000th time in spite of asking him not to. They are cheap, nasty plastic things and definitely not BPA free. MIL now thinks we need to ditch the baby bottles that were washed in the dishwasher in the same load though, in case the chemicals from the pegs have leached onto it?!

I will probably just rewash them and hope DH finally listens, but got me wondering, how strict are you about what does/ doesn't go in? Any bizarre things you or family members wash in the dishwasher, or are you strictly "dishwasher safe symbol only"?

Definitely not the bog brush!

Keladrythesaviour · 31/12/2021 00:51

DH puts car parts through ours for his renovation project. I've given up complaining and have just requested they don't get put through at the same time as the dishes. I get about a 50/50 success rate on that...

Roselilly36 · 01/01/2022 16:13

Most of our items go in the DW, all glasses other than crystal ones. Never pans or baking trays. All plates. Wouldn’t dream of DW our pegs though 😂. You can buy plastic clip it type things to reseal bags, JL & Lakeland sell them.

sueelleker · 03/01/2022 20:01

I don't put plastic in there-I'm never sure how heatproof it is.

Theoldwoman · 04/01/2022 02:37

Everything goes in the dishwasher in this house!

Including (separate load) fan extractors and glass light shades.

Topseyt · 04/01/2022 03:08

Everything goes in except non-stick frying pans here. I found to my cost than they tend to emerge from it each time a bit less non-stick than when they went in. So when I replaced them I no longer put the new ones in.

I can't say I ever put children's toys in it. I do put some plastic cups and plates though. Why on earth not? We are all still here.

I always put babies' bottles in when I could fit them, and had a special basket to hold the tests and dummies.

mm40 · 04/01/2022 04:52

Everything that will fit goes in APART from wooden chopping boards and a set of very expensive kitchen knives. If day to day stuff won’t tolerate the dishwasher then my kitchen won’t tolerate them - life is too short.

LadyPropane · 04/01/2022 05:01

I have two special wine glasses that I hand wash.

I also wash the babies bottles by hand because the dishwasher doesn't go on regularly enough for her to have enough clean bottles.

Everything else goes in the dishwasher.

Monty27 · 04/01/2022 05:09

Everything bar the loo seat (I've heard of people doing this but it may be tongue in cheek)
I don't cook salmon in it though angel me at the same time anyway.
Seriously everything that fits goes in. Apart from cherished pottery and paintings. 👍🏼

HoppingPavlova · 04/01/2022 05:34

We use garden pegs for food bags also. I replaced all of ours at one point and kept a large handful for this purpose- why buy something else when these will do. Also put everything through the dishwasher except water bottles, do those by hand.

We buy good quality pots/pans that should last for 20/25 years but only get 7/10 out of them as we use frequently and put them through the dishwasher only. Meh. I also have a large cupboard full of beautiful crystal glasses of all types of a set that people added onto for significant occasions - milestone birthdays and anniversaries etc. Never, ever used one once as they couldn’t go through the dishwasher. Instead I buy cheapish glasses that I don’t mind replacing every 5 years or so as they get scuffed, become a little opaque from constantly being in the dishwasher. I occasionally look at all my beautiful glasses and think how lovely it would be to use them, but no way am I hand washing them so it’s a complete waste I’m afraid.

stayathomer · 04/01/2022 05:48

We also don't dishwash pans, sharp knives, wooden chopping boards or wine glasses
Yes, this is me, the dishwasher seems to take the coating off the frying pans (could be the quality we have though, they're not amazing!) Also I don't do lunch boxes or flasks as in the past it does seem to have discoloured/changed them.

Mumdiva99 · 04/01/2022 05:54

We use our pegs for this. Why do they need washing when they have clipped the outside of a bag? I have never washed a peg ever.

filka · 04/01/2022 06:06

Buy him some Ikea bag clips and ditch teh pegs..

SusannaQueen · 04/01/2022 06:06

I don't put my carbon steel frying pan in but everything else goes in there, even the wooden chopping board - it's solid wood not strips, so washes fine. DH puts lego in there.

Monty27 · 04/01/2022 06:21

I put grubby clothes pegs that have been lying on the grass in my dishwasher 😳
With dishes. It's clean dirt right?

BusterGonad · 04/01/2022 06:23

I only thought the BPA plastic only affected you if you drank out of it, stored food in it or used it as a plate, I didn't realise something washed up next to it would suddenly become infected with it!

purplesequins · 04/01/2022 06:30

everything goes in the dishwasher bar things that are too big and a couple of non stick pans which we plan to replace with dw safe ones when they expire.

we also put in plastic trays for recycling if there is space left.

I wouldn't worry about the garden pegs tbh.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 07/01/2022 15:48

I put everything in. If it's going to get ruined by the dishwasher it has no place in my life. I currently have a very nice mug with a gold trim that will probably only last a couple of years regular dish washing. When it eventually gets worn looking it will be recycled.

I often wash things like bag clips, plastic cleaning brushes, etc in the dishwasher. They come out looking like new and I assume any plastic residues will be rinsed off.

Notcontent · 07/01/2022 22:52

@stealthninjamum

I do quite a lot of washing up. Nice glasses and mugs, the food preparation knives. Often I wash up pans if they take up too much space in the dishwasher.

I would never put in anything other than table ware, cutlery or pans. It’s weird to put pegs in. In fact I have never felt the need to clean my pegs.

Me too!

I am always surprised when people say they put everything in the dishwasher - they must have very different kitchen equipment or just replace things frequently when they get ruined in the dishwasher.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 07/01/2022 23:03

I just asked my DH about this as he's a chemistry prof in industrial materials. He says that in theory it is possible for BPA cross contamination to occur in a dishwasher, although he thinks it's unlikely. However pegs are made out of polysomething or polysomethingelse which don't contain BPA anyway.

SusannaQueen · 08/01/2022 02:12

I am always surprised when people say they put everything in the dishwasher - they must have very different kitchen equipment or just replace things frequently when they get ruined in the dishwasher.

I'm wondering what would get ruined. Don't think I've ever had anything ruined in the dishwasher. My glasses are um... Glass, cutlery is stainless steel, knives are sabatier mainly and ancient. As mentioned before the only things I don't put in are carbon steel pans, but it wouldn't ruin them, I would just have to re-season them.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 08/01/2022 12:28

I said I put everything in. I lied. I don't put my good knives in. But anything that requires more than a quick rinse in hot water goes in the dishwasher. Apart from those anything that needs handwashing doesn't get a space in my kitchen. Or on my body.

Quamora · 25/01/2022 14:40

I don’t put in non kitchen items.
I don’t put in water bottles, flasks, plastic containers or chopping boards. I used to put the water bottles, plastic chopping boards and containers in but I found they got a really strong dishwasher smell which transferred to the food/drink and made them taste weird so now I hand wash those. Oh also my two non stick pans get hand washed, all the rest are stainless steel thank goodness.

Dottychickens · 25/01/2022 14:51

Everything goes in the dishwashers here, including extractor fan thing, the gas hob nuts and the drainer.

I’ve had pans for almost 20 years that still look like new and have been dishwashed almost every day (from ikea, so I highly recommend them!).
Knives go in and haven’t been affected- I just sharpened them every few months.

When kids were little, plastic toys were put in too.

I don’t tend to replace items, so if a dishwasher has ruined it, I’d just not buy or use that item again.

Some lunchboxes did get discoloured but kids would eventually loose them anyway or I would buy them a new one for each new school year. The Sistema ones were always ok and I think they were used for a couple of years.
