Gas or induction?

Decided to look for a new cooker. Freestanding not built in as we rent from HA. I've always had gas. It's what I learnt to cook on. I hate electric unless it's an oven. I've detested a gas cooker forever especially when baking but couldn't afford a dual fuel till now. But we have been looking at induction cookers instead.

Had anyone switched over? How did you find it? Is induction really as good as gas when it comes to how quickly it responds? By that I mean if you turn down the heat is it instant like gas or slower like electric?

I've gone from gas to induction. It's been great. I like the look of induction

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/12/2021 14:39

Induction hob, it really does respond well and things simmer properly like clays does.

I’ve gone from an old electric job and this one has a booster function and heats a pan of water in 4 mins! Still getting used to how quick it is.

Depends, had both. Are you a big cook, because if you are indiction is no where near as good a heat to cook with as gas is. However, induction can look slicker and of course is easier to clean. Pros and cons for both.

Roselilly36 · 28/12/2021 14:46

Induction is great, had gas previously, wouldn’t go back.

Pastwordprotected · 28/12/2021 14:50

We changed from dual fuel to induction about 2 weeks ago. Have been pleasantly surprised by how good job is (have come across a few unresponsive ones in holiday lets). Bear in mind you might need to change your saucepans and frying pans - test with a magnet beforehand to see if they'll work

Love my induction hob. Had a gas range before and was initially a bit reluctant to change. But it's great to cook on and SO easy to clean. I am so glad we swapped and am a complete convert now!

Peridot1 · 28/12/2021 15:04

Induction. Had in our previous house by choice and loved it but moved last year into a house with a gas stove. Planning on replacing with induction this year.

I'm old school and prefer gas.
I am a trained chef and I just like fire Blush

crochetmylifeaway · 28/12/2021 15:08

Yeah I did remember about pans and need to check them. I've ditched all my frying pans for my cast iron one now so that one's good. The rest of my pans were a wedding present from my first marriage or from when I first moved out nearly 20 years ago so could be done with an upgrade but I'm pretty sure they will be fine. If not it's a good excuse to buy new ones lol.

Seems like an overwhelming vote for induction. Would give my right arm for a huge range cooker but kitchen and budget won't allow for that sadly.

Induction all the way.

Clarice99 · 28/12/2021 15:10

I changed from gas to induction. Would not go back to gas.

userxx · 28/12/2021 15:14

I'd happily swap just on the basis it's easier to clean.

crochetmylifeaway · 28/12/2021 16:19

My 4 year olds magnets have come in handy lol. 3 of my pans are fine but the other 3 are no use so looks like I'll be needing a new set of them too.

And I'm with you on the cleaning @userxx. I've just cleaned mine today after the Xmas feasts and I hate it! So many little bits!

Daftasabroom · 28/12/2021 16:56

Another one for induction. One of the best bits is you can turn it down or up more than gas. Also you won't be able to use very thin steel pans despite being magnetic - they can heat up too quickly.

Roselilly36 · 28/12/2021 17:52

Forgot to mention, induction is a breeze to clean.

parietal · 28/12/2021 18:07

definitely induction but make sure you get a powerful one. some are stronger than others.

northender · 28/12/2021 18:25

I love cooking & always cooked on gas,but now have induction & would never go back

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/12/2021 18:25

Love my induction hob

BluebellsGreenbells · 28/12/2021 18:30

Other pluses - mine is a stay warm option, timer, child-lock, soft melt, you can pause cooking if going to answer the door, there’s a bridge zone so you can use an extra large skillet if you feel the need - I haven’t tried it yet but intend too.

Yes to easy to clean and twice as fast as has to heat up.

Rawmum30 · 28/12/2021 18:38

Can glass cookware be used on it? I own a set of glass saucepans… does anyone have any experience with these on an induction?
Thanks 🙏🏻

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/12/2021 18:38

Induction - if your jam boils over it's a lot easier to clean than a gas cooker!

Note: Jam is available in jars from shops if you really want a gas hob.

Rawmum30 · 28/12/2021 18:39

Bluebells… what brand is your appliance?
It’s sounds super convenient.

🤢🤢🤢 that's envy.

No, glass will not work at all! If you google how induction works you will understand why. The science behind it is quite amazing.
DaisyWaldron · 29/12/2021 18:16

I hated my mum's induction hob, but most people prefer induction, so it might just be a case of getting used to a different style of cooking. My main reason for going for a gas hob is that I like to be prepared for a crisis, and with an electric kettle, oven and microwave and a gas hob, I can cook food and heat water in the event of either an electricity or gas cut, just not both. My gas hob is gas on glass, which isn't anywhere near as good as induction for sleek looks or easy cleaning, but is much better than a standard gas hob.
