Recommend me a vacuum cleaner that does not smell?

Just that really. Our one year old Miele already stinks, in spite of changing filter and bags. About to fork out for new one. DH says it doesn’t smell, but it does. Of sick. Any recommendations? I’d rather not spend loads? TIA

Would replacing the hose help?

I have never had a hoover that smells of sick.
You are bonkers to replace an expensive hoover.

30mph · 22/12/2021 11:42

You're not pregnant are you? Does funny things to my sense of smell...

SirensofTitan · 22/12/2021 12:00

I've never had a vacuum cleaner that smells of anything so my recommendation would be any type Smile

zzzz31 · 22/12/2021 12:02

Grin no, not pregnant! Hmm, perhaps sick isn’t the right word. But foul. I’ll try replacing the hose.

Tey waching the pipes out rather than replacing. But yes, they all smell after a while...

zzzz31 · 22/12/2021 12:05

@SirensofTitan seriously? I’ve had this problem with a Miele before. My cleaner cleans the kitchen floor with it. Could that be the problem? We used to have a lovely bagless Dyson but DH won’t buy another. Convinced that would be less smelly.

@Wombat69 should I was the hose out? And all the pipey bits? Smile I guess the same thing would happen to a new one soon enough!

Has someone hoovered up something wet at some point? Or cleaner hoovering after mopping? I would try washing the hoses and attachments and you can buy replacement attachments fairly cheaply too. The bag on ours can get a bit stinky - I put a few drops of essential oil on a folded up tissue inside the bag itself, which seems to help. I guess you could try the same on the filters too.

Fastforwardtospring · 22/12/2021 12:13

I use Stallion Vac Fresh, like a cardboard scented disc you place in the hoover, I’d rather the scent of this than smelly hoover smell.

sleepymum50 · 22/12/2021 12:15

I used to have a sebo that would smell. It had a paper bag that you only changed when full, so the smell. stopped every time I changed the bag, but would smell again after first hoover.

I now have a bagless shark which I love and can empty each time.

FictionalCharacter · 22/12/2021 12:16

Ours really stank after a recent vacuuming session. I’d seen a thread on MN about washing hoses, so as well as changing the bag I washed the motor protection filter, hose and all the accessories, and tapped the dust off the HEPA filter. No more stink.

Wauden · 22/12/2021 12:16

I made the mistake of vacuuming up something in the kitchen that must have been moist. It made a sponge thing in the cleaner go mouldy so I replaced the thing.

Wauden · 22/12/2021 12:17

I mean that I replaced the sponge thing. Or you could try cleaning it.

Ihearthosesleighbellsringing · 22/12/2021 12:19

Clean out all the hoses etc and put Lenor unstoppable ball things in the bag/dust filter.
Makes the hoover blow out a lovely smell whenever it's used.

Yes, cleaning the kitchen floor with it sounds like bad idea. Can't the cleaner use a long handled dustpan and brush instead?

All of the above and then place a small cotton wool ball soaked in your favourite essential oil into the vacuum bag. Your home will smell lovely when you've finished vacuuming.

Get some scented sachets to put inside the hoover bag. That sorted our Henry which, in a 3 pet household, ponged something awful. I got them in bulk very cheaply online.

Wombat69 · 22/12/2021 12:41

I have an ancient Henry that was never the same after a flatmate hoovered up sick in it, 30 years ago!

You can wash all the bits that aren't electric, it does help, so pipes, attachments, etc.

zzzz31 · 22/12/2021 14:01

Thank you, all! Such wonderful, helpful suggestions! I’m off to try all of them (until I can buy a bagless Dyson - but not yet!). Grin

If you use washing powder hoover that up as a cheap alternative...

Rummikub · 22/12/2021 14:11

Or bicarb.

Lockdownbear · 22/12/2021 14:11

As a kid a friends mum used to spray cheap perfume into her hoover.

I'd take the approach of washing all the bits out.

CrystalMaisie · 22/12/2021 14:24

My mum has always sprayed perfume in her vacuum bags too. My mil’s sebo smells disgusting, it’s the bag. Dyson bagless all the way.
