(Red) essential oil drops have 'bonded' to the bath. How can I get the stains out?

This is why I hate plastic bathtubs. Unfortunately it came with the house.

I have tried bicarb, washing powder, bleach. The stains won't budge. It's like they are bonded to the surface.
And the stains are red (wintergreen essential oil) which makes it look like I bled all over the bathtub!

Try some alcohol hand sanitiser.

The 80% alcohol spray seems to leech dye out of plastic, if it’s left on surfaces, when we use it to sanitise areas at work.

The pink stuff.

Try Koh.

Theunamedcat · 07/12/2021 16:04

White vinegar

Anaximedes · 07/12/2021 22:41

Oh poor you OP.

Great ideas here, Milton may also work, in a high concentration. On a cloth/sponge if not in a place where you can fill up with Milton+water or you'd need too much Milton!

Dettol bathroom power and pure seems to suck stains out of plastic. Spray, leave and wipe in ten. Repeat if necessary.

DentalWorries · 07/12/2021 22:45

Toothpaste. I saw a video on TikTok where they tried everything for the same problem and toothpaste worked

GiltEdges · 07/12/2021 22:46

Nail varnish remover?? Acetone dissolves all sorts!

DentalWorries · 07/12/2021 22:46

It also works very well if you happen to have a white car and accidentally get too close to a red one resulting in red paint along the side of your car Blush

Aphantasia · 07/12/2021 22:47

Try hairspray, but be careful! It takes indelible pen off my coated table but if you leave it on too long it also takes the top layer with it which leaves a dull Matt patch

I can recommend Cif bathroom mousse. Left it on a plastic bathtub once and got distracted, so it was on for an hour or something. When I remembered and wiped it away, it took a load of stains with it (fake tan-happy housemate had stained it). Magic!

Wd40 is great for stains like that on the bath. My son had a bath bomb that stained the bath and that was the only thing that got it off.
Also works on scuffs from bath toys we get on our plastic/acrylic bath.

Make sure you clean the bath with bathroom cleaner and water afterwards though as otherwise it makes the bath super slippery!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yesterday I tried:

Barkeeper's friend (the powder - I made a paste)
The pink stuff

Neither worked but I think the stains have faded slightly.

On my list to try next (because I already have them in the house):

Toothpaste
Wd40
Hand sanitiser

I shall report back!

Try magic eraser

stevalnamechanger · 10/12/2021 00:13

Domestos spray bleach , generously sprayed and left on over night even removes my hair dye from tub!!

flashbac · 11/12/2021 13:42

Toothpaste and a magic sponge thingy (not used together) didn't work.
Is the magic sponge thing supposed to break up into pieces after use or have I bought a dud? It worked a treat on my tiles though.

Pic to show the flipping stains that have seemingly ETCHED INTO MY BATHTUB FOREVER!

Hand sanitiser will shift that. The high percentage ones are basically rubbing alcohol.

Roselilly36 · 13/12/2021 15:40

Cif cream is usually good for tough marks

AdoraBell · 14/12/2021 14:19

Hope you have success with some of these suggestions OP

DustyMaiden · 14/12/2021 19:38

Nail varnish remover, sparingly it will remove a layer.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/12/2021 19:43

As it was an oil-soluble dye/colouring, I'd try applying a colourless oil to it to see if that will soak it out again, at least to some extent.

Davros · 15/12/2021 22:59

Those magic erasers do break up but they work usually

SunnyLeaf · 15/12/2021 23:04

I had to get bath resprayed for damage from essential oils! Fairly common apparently! Nothing would shift it

onepieceoflollipop · 15/12/2021 23:12

I had this but the stains were dark yellow/pale brown from jasmine essential oil.

I’ve reduced the staining by about half by using the roughest edge of those 4 way nail filing blocks. I can still see it but it used to be really unsightly and obvious - now you have to look more closely.
I’ll post a photo of the block.

It took lots of rubbing over each individual spot, trying not to scour the unaffected surface. It took a long time and several ‘goes’ maybe 15-20 minutes which doesn’t sound long but it is when you’re rubbing! I’m planning to try again to see if I can get more off.

I did extensive googling and tried many other solutions including most mentioned above.
