The coldest duvet cover?

Okigen · 25/11/2021 20:56

Hello, I'm one of the unfortunate perpetual hot sleepers. I have always used the duvet without a cover, and even then sometimes it still gets too hot that I wake up at night. Yesterday I had to leave the window slightly open too (and my duvet is only 4.5 tog for goodness sake 🙄)

I've just bought a wool duvet as I heard it's the coldest material for duvet, but given the expensive price tag I need to find a cover for it. Please can someone recommend something that is breathable and, erm... cold? (I had some cotton ones from John Lewis. Still too hot 😬)

I always thought satin would be really cold but never tried and it's not breathable is it?

Heruka · 25/11/2021 21:06

My Egyptian cotton ones are cold to me, but I am a chilly sleeper and change them for flannel in winter.

MonicaGellerBing · 25/11/2021 21:20

Would it not be easier to just keep a fan on while you sleep?

Northernsoullover · 25/11/2021 21:22

Egyptian cotton definitely.

Or sleep with a lightweight quilt type thing?
catfunk · 25/11/2021 21:23

I use 100% linen in summer. H&M home does a reasonable range.

Okigen · 25/11/2021 21:28

@MonicaGellerBing I tried that but no effect. It seems that when the cover is on the duvet will retain the heat inside and downwards to me when I sleep.

@Sh05 Do you have any experience with satin? I heard it's cold to touch but can heat up due to low breathability Confused

@catfunk Oh good shout, I've never thought of linen. You mean something like this? www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0188590045.html

Maybe dump the duvet all together and just use a flat sheet.

dementedpixie · 25/11/2021 21:37

Get a 1tog duvet

Glinsk · 25/11/2021 21:39

I have a 1 tog wool duvet for summer and a slightly heavier one for winter. DH is cold so we have two singles.
I use any duvet cover, I think it's the duvet that makes you warm. I sometimes have a cotton sheet under the duvet so I can fling the duvet off but still be covered.

M&S comfortably cool bedding
My cat never ever sleeps on my bed. The minute I put that bedding on, he got on it. Now he only uses my bed if I have that specific bedding on so I can confirm it definitely feels different Grin
It's silky smooth but not that cheap satin feel and feels cold to touch

NotMyCat · 25/11/2021 21:46

Here
They do pillow cases, sheets, duvet covers, the lot

Use a duvet cover but no duvet? That’s what I do in the summer.

Okigen · 25/11/2021 21:49

@Glinsk Same here. I sometimes use 2 summer quilts for winter so I can chuck 1 off when it gets too hot. How do you find the wool duvet ? I'm anxiously waiting for mime to arrive (and pray that it will be on the lighter side as they say it can be between 2-5 tog Smile)

I have a Cath Kidston duvet cover that feels perpetually cold. I love it as I'm always too hot but OH complains that it's too cold!

Our moody little cat's preferred sleeping place is DDs bed. She was quite traumatised when I bought new bedding last year, and is very put out if DD doesn't immediately put new bedding on after stripping the bed. She knows she's not allowed on "naked" mattress topper and duvet and makes a lot of fuss until it is ready to sleep on again!!🤣

Sorry slightly went off topic!Blush

NotMyCat · 25/11/2021 21:57

Evidence. He could have gone for the wool blanket but nope, wants the cold feeling bedding Confused

High threat count good quality cotton. They seem to stay nice and cool. They feel silky to the touch but are still breathable.

AdamRyan · 25/11/2021 22:01

Wool duvets are the business. 100% cotton covers are fine.
I love my thin wool duvet all year.

BendingSpoons · 25/11/2021 22:06

Cut holes out the top side of the cover to let air out?

WrinklesShminkles · 25/11/2021 22:06

Percale duvet cover from Beddable is my coolest cover. I have linen ones too but I think they feel warmer.

gogohm · 25/11/2021 22:11

High thread count cotton - Aldi sometimes have them for a reasonable cost or perhaps Asda. No point spending a fortune in case it doesn't suit

user1471604848 · 25/11/2021 22:11

If you're that hot, why bother with any duvet at all.
Just use a top-sheet or empty duvet cover. With a small blanket to hand, in case you get cold.
That's what I do in summer.
