The coldest duvet cover?

Hello, I'm one of the unfortunate perpetual hot sleepers. I have always used the duvet without a cover, and even then sometimes it still gets too hot that I wake up at night. Yesterday I had to leave the window slightly open too (and my duvet is only 4.5 tog for goodness sake 🙄)

I've just bought a wool duvet as I heard it's the coldest material for duvet, but given the expensive price tag I need to find a cover for it. Please can someone recommend something that is breathable and, erm... cold? (I had some cotton ones from John Lewis. Still too hot 😬)

Why not buy a bedspread instead

Happynow · 25/11/2021 22:20

Bamboo. Please give this a google. Nothing comes close for me.

leopardprintpants · 25/11/2021 22:21

A large cellular blanket instead?

Hoolihan · 25/11/2021 22:23

Just ditch the duvet altogether surely??

Glinsk · 25/11/2021 22:51

@Okigen My 1 tog is like a thin blanket. The other I think is 5/6 tog and much heavier. If it's 5C or less and I have a window open it's fine, any warmer and I'm cycling through hot /duvet off/ cold/ duvet on etc.
To those who say why bother - I like some weight. I yearn to be cold enough to snuggle down under a massive quilt. I do feel cold when I get into bed but often within minutes of falling asleep I wake up on fire.

This is my favourite duvet cover. It stays cool throughout summer and it's my favourite.

Maybe just use a duvet cover with no duvet in it. X

So many suggestions, thanks everyone Grin Coincidencially today is Black Friday so I'm walking around shops to try out your suggested options.

For those who asked why I shouldn't just dump the duvet altogether, it is because I actually feel cold when going to bed. It's only during sleep that I would get gradually overheated, hence the need for something cool and breathable (or "temperature regulating", for technical jargon Blush)

In that case you could put a heated blanket on under the sheet under you so the bed is warm when you get in, and then turn it off?
I'm still sleeping without a duvet - just the duvet cover. I prefer just to wear warmer pajamas as I too get hot in the night!

@MonicaGellerBing

Would it not be easier to just keep a fan on while you sleep?
Yes this is what I do. Constantly have the fan on. The noise relaxes me as well. Could give that a go op.
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/11/2021 16:23

A friend of mine recommends these

MrsRubyMonday · 26/11/2021 19:22

We abandoned the duvet a few years ago. We have a flat sheet, and then multiple layers of thin blankets, depending on the temperature. Currently just using the sheet and one blanket but it's almost time to add a second. We each then have a single size blanket we can add or remove as necessary, makes it much easier to balance temperatures. I like to be snuggled up warm when I go to bed but get too hot so I take the single blanket off when I wake up for the toilet.

heidbuttsupper · 26/11/2021 19:25

@Okigen M&S Comfortably Cool range with a 3.5tog duvet all year round for me

EvilPea · 26/11/2021 19:32

I just have a blanket now

catfunk · 26/11/2021 22:16

Yes @Okigen that H&M one is the set I have. It's really nice and softens with age.

When it's super hot I ditch the duvet altogether And use a cotton flat sheet over the top of me.

FissionMailed · 26/11/2021 22:19

Forget all the stereotype bed covering sthat you've been brainwashed into buying by "The Man" ...

Get a sleeping bag liner, sleep in it, wash when dirty. Easy breezy .

Okigen · 28/11/2021 10:19

Hello, just popping back to report. I ended up with high thread count Egyptian cotton + wool duvet. Oh my goodness, the combo stayed cool throughout the night. I closed the window and slept like a log Grin

@RaraRachael

I have a Cath Kidston duvet cover that feels perpetually cold. I love it as I'm always too hot but OH complains that it's too cold!
Me too, and an Orla Kiely one that’s the same.
TheCreamCaker · 28/11/2021 18:08

I get too hot as well, and my duvet all year round was 4.5 tog. I've recently bought a 3.0 tog, a fibre one, and it's much better. Amazon.

notoldjustpastyoung · 29/11/2021 21:37

Its the duvet that makes you hot, not the cover. You should get a summer tog.

Bertiebiscuit · 29/11/2021 23:03

Definitely get linen duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases - much better for keeping cool than anything else
