Real talk pls: how much do you pay per month for electricity?

crumpledlinens · 22/11/2021 15:55

How much is your monthly direct debit and how big is your house? Also, is it terraced/semi/detached?

We are currently paying just short of £200/month for a two bed semi and it seems.... a lot.

Bulb Vari-fair rate, so I suppose - given the news today - we will shortly be moved to another provider in any case.

£84 for gas and electric. 3 bed terrace.

sittingonacornflake · 22/11/2021 16:28

You'd have a better steer if you asked people what they were consuming. DDs have gone up massively but that's not necessarily in line with consumption as a lot of people are reporting that the impact of this is very large credit balances with their provider. I know this personally because I cancelled my DD with bulb in September and my invoices have just been eating up my credit balance ever since. Once that's gone I'm just going to pay for invoices as they fall due.

DespairingHomeowner · 22/11/2021 17:12

£200 for a 2 bed does seem a lot, I’m paying £120/month for same and my energy supplier agreed that is too high (I think it should be £90-£100 or so)

Are you sure you have no faults/immersion heater on etc?

khaleesi71 · 23/11/2021 09:26

I'm on £277 a month but we have a 5 bed period draughty property. I got tangled up in the Green Network collapse last year so was shifted to EDF and it went downhill from there. I'm sitting out on a standard tariff and will swap ASAP. Now my account is in credit I'll probably stop my dd and pay the bill as it comes in.

OldTinHat · 23/11/2021 09:42

£50 pcm in a 3 bed terrace but I live alone and am very precious about lights, things on standby, I don't use the gas heating unless my 4 layers of clothes aren't cutting it. I'm disabled and home all day so it's a bit tough.

OldTinHat · 23/11/2021 09:43

Oh and my house is 200yrs old and full of damp!

Eileen101 · 23/11/2021 10:06

We pay an average of £40-50 per month for electric and probably the same again for gas (although our heating is gas powered so the monthly amount has much more variance than the electric).
We live in a 4 bed terrace, over 3 floors. Electricity wise, I work from home so have a laptop, extra screen, printer etc plugged in and turned on until 5pm, kettle going plenty, and an electric heater in my office.
The TV tends to be on for maybe an hour per day, two tops.
I'd say your bill seems very high. What is the unit price you're paying?

SwayingInTime · 23/11/2021 10:22

£116/mth for gas and electricity in a 3 bed semi.

SpamIAm · 23/11/2021 10:32

Currently paying £56 a month for gas and electricity but we're in credit. Important to note that we're on a fixed tariff that was taken out before the disaster that is current energy prices!

Four bed detached but new build and all new (well, newish now!) appliances. So everything is pretty energy efficient.

£200 seems a lot for anyone but obviously there's huge variety depending on whether you have a gas supply or not, how your water is heated, what heating you have etc etc. If you post more details im sure people can suggest some ideas for trying to reduce your usage.

Also check, of course, whether you're in debit or credit.

eurochick · 23/11/2021 11:00

About £120 a month. That's in a five bed house. The heating is oil, which is a separate matter.

TurnUpTurnip · 23/11/2021 11:07

£80 a month for a 3 bed house, just electric though, about £100 a month for gas

Elllicam · 23/11/2021 11:09

£220 a month 5 bed detached with Eon

Theline · 23/11/2021 19:30

£157/mth with Eon - I think our tariff is about to change so that will go up
Modern 5 bed detached (average sized one)

FourTeaFallOut · 23/11/2021 19:52

4 bed detached and we use an average of 20kwh/day in electricity (which includes an electric car). I'm not sure what the cost of electric is alone but we pay £160/month and on a fixed rate until March. Between now and then we need sort out some bad habits.

lazyakita · 24/11/2021 01:06

Really old 4 bed semi. We work from home most of the time and electricity alone is about £65 per month. Gas is far more as it does our heating/cooking.

NotMyCat · 24/11/2021 01:30

Just had my statement through! 2 bed apartment (open plan, built 15 years ago)

£25 electric
£23 gas

Says 109kwh electric used and 483kwh gas

Hoosemover · 24/11/2021 14:19

£90 for electric and £96 for gas. We think this is high as just moved into the house and not high consumers . We used to pay about £70 a month for both when we lived in a flat.

PaperMonster · 24/11/2021 20:44

We’re all electric and pay £155 for a small three bed terrace. Unit price is roundabout 19p. Used 40kwh today so just over £8 but it’s mostly been £5-£6 a day since the beginning of November.

MojoMoon · 28/11/2021 15:53

What's your actual consumption? Check on your bill or smart meter. (If you don't have a smart meter, get one. Then you can see exactly what you are using)

This week (cold) I have used between 4-7kwh of electricity per day and pretty much exactly 4m3 of gas per day.

I am in a 2 bed terrace and it's £70 a month for gas and elec combined and I am in credit ahead of winter.

There is little to be gained by switching now - pretty much all new customers will be at the price cap level so same everywhere.

You'd be best served looking at how much you are consuming and what you are using it for.

Direct debit amount means nothing as it may be more or less than what you actually use.

I submit readings monthly and get a bill detailing how much gas/electric I have used. Last month we paid £100 but use £120 worth combined

BangingOn · 28/11/2021 16:28

I pay on receipt of a bill based on a meter reading, which is £70ish in the summer and up to £120 a month in the winter. This is for electric only (no dual tariff discount as we don’t have mains gas) for a 3 bed cottage.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 13/12/2021 20:25

£84 for both...3 bed victorian terrace.

mayblossominapril · 13/12/2021 20:51

Depends on what you’re using. I had a two bed terrace and it was £50 per month combined gas and electric. I mainly used the log burner for space heating and was mean with the electric.
My parents have a large house with an electric aga thing, a couple of electric towel rails amd all the usual appliances and spend £100 per month. Without the electric aga, I think they’d pay about £40 a month. They only use the tumble drier in the depths of winter but they do all of my washing in winter as well.

user1497787065 · 23/12/2021 04:30

I pay £104 per month for a five bed, four bathroom house but I also have solar panels and we probably receive about £700-£800 for electricity generated. Our heating and water is oil and I have a bottle gas hob.

Tumbleweed101 · 24/12/2021 08:41

Electric is around £120 a month with a key meter so probably more expensive than it needs to be. Less in summer as tumble dryer gets used a lot this time of year. My daughter works shifts so there is electric use through day even though I’m at work and younger ones at school. Heating is oil but a tank lasts nearly a year since I had a new boiler so ofsets the cost a little.
