Half worn clothes

What do you do with them?

If you are the sort who washes everything after every wear, this is not the thread for you...

We don't, so we always have a load of jeans, jumpers, bras etc that are kicking around waiting for their next outing. It is rarely next day, so there ends up being quite a pile.

What do people do with these? I don't like putting them away - feels like they would contaminate the clean clothes. Do you have a special cupboard or pegs? This feels like a problem someone must have solved so I'm probably missing something stupidly obvious!

I leave them out overnight and if they pass the sniff test they get put away in the wardrobe. But I’m a slob and it wouldn’t ever occur to me to worry about different grades if clean.

Dh had a floordrobe and I put a big basket in that spot so now his clothes go in there.

My dsis puts over door hooks on the outside of her wardrobe and hangs hers on there

Clearlynotmyname · 20/11/2021 08:46

3 solutions there Grin
Ours is closest is your sis's version, though a load ends up on the floor too. I guess I'm trying to move towards a clearer, tidier feeling house so maybe I need to get over myself and do your version...
Would love to hear if anyone has a special halfway house cupboard though!

Mine get artfully draped on a shoe rack. It is now not really a shoe rack.

Plantstrees · 20/11/2021 08:52

I hang mine up in the bathroom on hangers where possible in the hope that the steam from the shower will freshen them up for the next time I wear them.

Clearlynotmyname · 20/11/2021 08:53

Exactly! Why have bedroom designers not solved this? Hmm

Ours go on the banister to 'air' and then either worn within the next couple of days and washed or like a PP, go back in wardrobe if pass the sniff test.

I'm looking for an old-fashioned clothes rack/screen for this purpose. My mom has one. That would be a perfect halfway house.

romdowa · 20/11/2021 08:56

They go on the chair !! I thought everyone had a chair with worn but clean clothes.

PonderingTotskeit · 20/11/2021 08:56

I used to have a basket but now it’s a mess on a chair in the bedroom until it gets worn again or washed.

Maybe get some different coat hangers, or tie a ribbon round the bit that hooks over the rail etc, to identify clothes already worn if you want to be tidier.

PermanentTemporary · 20/11/2021 08:57

Chair here too. I've tried to do without a clothes chair but it's essential.

Sprogonthetyne · 20/11/2021 08:57

What I actually do is chuck them in the general direction of a chair in my bedroom, where they pile up and inevitable fall on the floor.

What I wish I did was hang them on outside wardrobe hooks like PP's DD. That's genius as it keeps them nice, let's them air and reminds you about them before you pull out more clean cloths.

Clearlynotmyname · 20/11/2021 08:57

Sorry the "exactly" was for Kleptronic - we end up using things that were meant for something else

I had this exact thought process yesterday. I tend to wash anything that goes directly onto skin on intimate areas after one wear. I therefore have lots of clothes, especially in winter when I wear layers, that have been worn already but do not need washing yet.

I also do not like putting it all back in the wardrobe as think it will contaminate the clean clothes. I tend to fold and put away in a different section of the wardrobe but this isn't a great solution for all the items, plus I end up with disorder as things aren't where they really belong.

Clearlynotmyname · 20/11/2021 09:00

Sounds like everyone else's house is covered in half worn clothes too then - this is making me feel better Smile

I have taken to wearing the same items throughout the week a few times. Why do I need to show off that I have multiple changes of clothes? So if I wear a dress on Monday it might see me through a few days. Otherwise yes to an airing and putting back. Trousers, skirts, jumpers, cardigans are so likely to go months or longer between washes.

ColdShouldersWarmTummy · 20/11/2021 09:01

Hang them in the bathroom or on the back of the bedroom door. We need to get a chair! 😂

Blastandbollocks · 20/11/2021 09:02

I use this on the outside of my wardrobe door along with a chair for jeans.

yellowflowersintherain · 20/11/2021 09:04

I had never heard of the "contaminating the clean clothes" thing until I met DH!

Just try putting them back in the wardrobe/drawer, I promise it will be fine. And so much better than having clothes draped everywhere.

I've even brought DH round to my way of thinking now.

FalconQueen · 20/11/2021 09:05

What you need is a clothes ladder, I have one from IKEA like this www.ikea.com/nl/en/ideas/a-birch-butler-to-hold-your-clothes-rec4npxmpoy

HalfpastFlea · 20/11/2021 09:06

Clothes chair here too, artfully draped over the back.

Gassylady · 20/11/2021 09:06

Combination of chair and coathangers on the wardrobe door knobs here. A habit I’m trying to instill in the kids too, rather than wear once then assume it needs washing

FalconQueen · 20/11/2021 09:06

It is called a towel stand but it is great 'half worn' clothes

2018SoFarSoGreat · 20/11/2021 09:08

Oh I have a designated deep drawer for mine. They get neatly folded, sometimes, but often just pushed in. Then they get another wear before the wash. It works! A half clean half dirty drawer.

SheWoreYellow · 20/11/2021 09:10

I do the following:
Jeans - stay on the chair, I tend to wear them for days in a row, then wash.
Work shirts - wear twice before washing (WFH hence work shirts and jeans combo) put back in the wardrobe on the hanger the wrong way
Jumpers - put back if I’ve worn a T-shirt underneath

MonkeyPuddle · 20/11/2021 09:10

Things that I feel need an airing get hooked over the drawer knobs overnight and then rehung.
DP uses the floordrobe but that’s on the other side of the room at his side of the bed so I can’t see the mess, so I don’t care.
I have a chair in the kids room.

MrsFin · 20/11/2021 09:11

@romdowa

They go on the chair !! I thought everyone had a chair with worn but clean clothes.

I do! We have a big bedroom so we have a chair each. I thought everyone had a chair too.
