Half worn clothes

What do you do with them?

If you are the sort who washes everything after every wear, this is not the thread for you...

We don't, so we always have a load of jeans, jumpers, bras etc that are kicking around waiting for their next outing. It is rarely next day, so there ends up being quite a pile.

What do people do with these? I don't like putting them away - feels like they would contaminate the clean clothes. Do you have a special cupboard or pegs? This feels like a problem someone must have solved so I'm probably missing something stupidly obvious!

I put them in my bottom drawer which also has my jeans in it so they're not with clean clothes except jeans but that seems ok somehow

I shower every day so i feel they can mostly be worn again but I don't if I've got sweaty (like if we've had a long walk) or feel dirty or baby has thrown up on me Grin

Notcontent · 21/11/2021 15:24

I put away things like jumpers, jeans, etc as long as they look and smell clean.
I do have a separate felt basket type thing where I put things I might wear at home a few days in a row.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/11/2021 15:28

Just put them away

I used to faff about with backs of doors, but honestly, they won’t contaminate anything. I usually hang up on back of door to air overnight post wear - but whether i do or not, it all goes away on the weekly tidy up.

Back in the wardrobe
If they aren’t clean enough for that then they go in the wash

greengrassapreciationsociety · 23/11/2021 23:36

A halfway house for clothes. This is genius.

ViaRia · 25/11/2021 18:55

Controversial, but I mostly just hang them back into the wardrobe. I think that if they are worn enough to contaminate the other clothes then they are probably too dirty to be worn again.

However, I also usually tend to have a small pile of clothes (2-3 items, roughly folded) which I keep separately. These are worn clothes which can be used again for messy tasks, such as housework or walking the dog. Could keep this small pile anywhere, e.g., a designated drawer, tucked under the bed, on a chair… but I have one of those cubby-hole things that hangs inside the wardrobe, and I keep my contaminants there.

I just put mine back in the wardrobe. I have plenty of long term friends, so I obviously don’t smell! 😉

MMAMPWGHAP · 25/11/2021 19:33

I have s set of hooks at side of wardrobe. I hang them on there for at least 24hours and put them back in wardrobe.
Over the years I think I have reversed my mindset to ‘wash if it really needs it’ from ‘wash it after worn’. It’s much better for the planet, the clothes and your electricity bill.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/11/2021 19:51

I don’t put them in the wardrobe because I was told it attracts moths.

I have a chair they are neatly rest onbefore the next outing.

user1497787065 · 25/11/2021 19:51

I re-hang them but, inside out so I know they have been worn once.

Monsoon92 · 25/11/2021 19:54

We have double laundry baskets for each of us (DH has his clothes in a separate room) and the dirty clothes go in one side and the in between clothes go in the other side! Probably not the best option for airing them but it keeps things looking tidy!

Oneforthemoneytwo · 25/11/2021 20:04

It goes back in the wardrobe. This is the maddest thing I’ve heard. If it’s clean enough to wear again it’s clean enough to go In the wardrobe

domesticgodmess · 25/11/2021 23:09

They go on the chair in this house, only freshly washed clothes in the wardrobes.

Some get hung on hangers behind the door or on a clothes rack to try to be a bit tidier.
The chair pile has definitely expanded since WFH!

Dr273 · 26/11/2021 09:55

I would love a solution to this.

I currently have 3 pairs of trousers on the back of a chair, 2 bras hanging off the bed/chest of drawers, and a strappy top hanging off the chest of drawers (OP you're right; it was okay yesterday, but FLIPPING COLD today).

For my husband I actually put a bar up on the wall for his roll out of bed scummy clothes for dogwalking that he wears dozens of times, and he also uses it for belts, but there's only so much capacity. I guess they need to be "out" so visible to choose first, but also able to air and not totally in the way...

RampantIvy · 26/11/2021 10:01

Ours go on the banister to 'air' and then either worn within the next couple of days and washed or like a PP, go back in wardrobe if pass the sniff test.

This is what I do. Clean pants and socks every day, usually a clean T-shirt every day unless it passes the sniff test. Trousers/jeans, jumpers and cardigans get worn a few times before being washed. I don't like putting worn clothes back into the wardrobe either.

I also have a reed diffuser in the bottom of the wardrobe to keep it smelling fresh.

Kanaloa · 26/11/2021 10:09

Air them out then hung back up. If they’re clean enough to rewear there no worry about them ‘contaminating’ the other clothes!
