How do I stop my washing smelling of poo?

Coffeesnob11 · 13/11/2021 20:56

My son is potty training and sometimes does a poo in his pants. I get rid of the poo and wash his pants put before washing them but no matter what I do, the whole wash comes out smelling awful. I have tried washing at 40, 50 or 60. I have tried softener, no softener and a cap of zoflora but it all just smells horrible. Does anyone have any good tips?

Soak to get rid of the poo first, water and a few drops of zoflora.

I’d have a look at Clean Cloth Nappies and follow their nappy washing advice.

We daily wash our nappies on 40 on a quick wash so they aren’t sitting dirty, then dry pail. Every three days we do a long wash on 60 with ariel bio power and a dose of vanish powder. Nappies are white and smell fresh. It’s important to measure the actual amount of powder needed, it was a lot more than I had originally been putting in.

Lots of poo threads today.

me4real · 13/11/2021 22:13

If it's that bad I would treat them as if they were cloth nappies and wash at high temperature (along with towels, tea towels or whatever, just to justify a wash.) This will also help stop your other clothes etc smelling as they won't be washed with them.

When DS had poo accidents, I soaked the pants in hot water and Dettol laundry cleanser for a couple of hours before machine washing.
40 degrees with liquid tabs and Dettol cleanser. A squirt of vinegar in the drawer will help too.

jennymac31 · 13/11/2021 22:16

Use dettol antibacterial laundry cleaner or use a washing machine cleaner solution before doing your next wash.

mayblossominapril · 13/11/2021 22:16

I wash the poo off (or sick, it’s most likely to be sick in our house).Give it a good scrub with soap and water. Hand wash on detergent and rinse and then put in the machine for awash.
When it goes in the washer there is no actual poo or sick left on the item.
Line dry
I suspect your washer is usinghardly any water

Isabellabasil · 13/11/2021 22:17

Put the powder in the drawer, not the drum.

Essexmum321 · 13/11/2021 22:19

cheap multi pack of pants from asda

Thewiseoneincognito · 13/11/2021 22:21

Never ever use Eco wash, it’s not a proper cycle. As someone else said clean your machine with a few dishwasher tablets on a 60/90 wash.

rainbowandglitter · 13/11/2021 22:22

Why are you putting the powder in the drum?

Lotusmonster · 13/11/2021 22:29

I know this is unconventional but after knocking any obvious solids down the loo, I have laid poo pants out on the lawn and given them a good blast with the hose for a few minutes before chucking them in the machine ….but then I’m more of a gardener than a housewife 😀

Staryflight445 · 13/11/2021 22:39

You’re probably using too much powder. Less is more.
You only actually need a tablespoon of laundry liquid for example for a full 8kg wash.

Marthathefrog · 13/11/2021 22:43

Buy multipack of pants that are cheap enough to throw out but also a 90 degree wash with a tiny bit of bleach in the drawer will sort out the machine

choosername1234 · 13/11/2021 22:51

@Coffeesnob11

Sorry should have added machine is 2 years old, I put the wash on a 4 hour eco wash or 3.5 hour cotton wash. I use powder (plenty of it) put directly into the drum. I have to use non bio as his skin doesn't cope with bio. I run a cleaner through at 90 degrees once a month. It works brilliantly for all my washing apart from his poor nappies. I don't want to chuck them as it's not great for the environment.
Powder needs to go into the drawer, not directly into the drum. Not sure this will be causing the issue but worth trying?
lisaandalan · 13/11/2021 22:51

Wash them separately or buy cheap pants and throw them away or use pull ups and take him to the toilet very hour. X

Breadpapercone · 13/11/2021 22:57

Really shocked at all the throw pants in the bin after 1 use comments.

Can you wash the pants with bio powder along with stuff your child wont be wearing if he is sensitive. Then rinse them lots in cold water in sink when they come out so no biological residue left?

Breadpapercone · 13/11/2021 22:58

Or pre soak them in biological powder before the wash?

Although think your machine might have issues

Spottybotty20 · 13/11/2021 22:59

My washing was revolutionised by switching to bio (have you actually tried it and had a reaction) it’s a massive myth that bio is an allergen it’s more likely to be fragrance.

Using the right amount - reading the packaging and weighing the amount for the size drum and water type. I marked a line on a plastic cup so I know how much.

Washing at 40 for normal dirtiness and 60 for real dirt (which is usually poo/sick or tomato stains)

Using the full wash on my machine so around 3hrs. And filling the machine enough that it agitates properly.

I don’t bother with any antibacterial santitsing stuff as they are either nonsense or harmful to waterways. Napisan in the U.K. doesn’t contain the same active ingredient as elsewhere so it’s useless

PieMistee · 13/11/2021 23:01

Fail safe environmental friendly method. Pre soak in a bucket of bicarb and vinegar and water. Wash as normal.

It’s the eco wash. It’s water and energy saving so instead of rinsing more with fresh water it’ll use the same water for the full wash. Mine uses less water on the eco mode so fewer rinses/ fresh water iyswim.

Switch to a standard cycle for poop stuff with bio powder.

mathanxiety · 13/11/2021 23:12

Throw out the soiled pants.

Buy a supply of new ones.

Don't contaminate your wash with poo.

mathanxiety · 13/11/2021 23:14

I am totally disgusted, some people on this thread suggesting to buy cheap pants and throw them away.FFS do you not realise that most likely childlabour would be used to produce chep pants.you should be ashamed of yourself.

The same children probably made the original pooped in pants, FFS.

Maybe she should lecture her DS about pooping in them....

ButtonMoonLoon · 13/11/2021 23:19

I’d either pre soak in napisan or put a few capfuls of dettol laundry cleaner in with your fabric softener
